You got your history wrong; transmission towers are small versions of the Eiffel tower. Yes, it was seen already as ugly when it was erected ... but it was the first of its kind.

It's a pretty spectacular structure, more than I expected, but yeah, it's not worth all the pictures and decorations with the Eiffel Tower on it so many women 50+ years old love to cover their house with.
