+49 The whole concept of Mechs is stupid. amirite?

by General-Meet 1 day ago

It doesn't even look cool. The actual unpopular opinion

by loniemcdermott 1 day ago

Compared to wheels or treads, walking wastes far more energy and it's inneficient. Their tall profile makes them easy targets. Complex joints and servos would fail faster than a tank's simpler mechanisms. I hate that movies act like they are this futuristic machines, when they could be created now, but the design is too stupid for anyone to try. Well this is actually a super popular opinion that most people can agree on. I'm with OP... It doesn't even look cool. I hate you with every fibre of my being.

Bro probably watched Pacific Rim Uprising.

by RealAcanthisitta 1 day ago

They watched what? There is no such film.

by Aufderharalvina 1 day ago

I only saw the first one years ago

by General-Meet 1 day ago

Don't watch the second one

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What second one?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Exactly

by Anonymous 1 day ago

There is no Pacific Rim sequel in Ba Sing Se

by DeviceSerious 1 day ago

It was supposed to be a sequel, but the world watched it, then politely retconned that it had nothing to do with the first one. It's that bad.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

(It is, just an inside joke about it being so horrendous that Pacific Rim fans, like me, pretend it doesn't exist).

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I love Mecha.

by destinyschiller 1 day ago

The correct answer.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They wouldnt be that bad for military use depending on the need, but something like an exo suit from some of the cod games would be very practical if they could get it to work seamlessly like in the games

by Anonymous 1 day ago

And dont forget that, scientifically speaking, piloting a Mecha will be awful and almost imposible. Its movements will be clunky and will make you throw out.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yea maybe now. I feel like you guys are forgetting that in these stories the mech works as an extension of your own body. How is moving as seamless as your own body clunky?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

A lot of mechas are made to fight weird enemies that dont exist in the real world which traditional weapons have failed against. Almost no one is saying we should use them in the real world instead of tanks or drones.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They're just really damn cool. Everyone knows they're a terrible idea, but sometimes you can't help but indulge in a bit of nonsense for the cool factor alone.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

wrong

by SignalControl6416 1 day ago

Yeah everything sounds bad about them, but they look cool and have kind of unique appearce and behavior.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They're cool when it's because it's based on the user's body movements to explain why it needs to be shaped like them. Like iron man or pacific rim

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah and sword fighting in sci-fi doesn't make sense either most times but it's cool as frick

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Mechs are usually really stupid in execution, especially in anime. The only time I've seen it make sense is in pacific rim because the fights are on land and shallow oceans

by Temporary-Bug 1 day ago

The reason mechs are neat is they can turn quickly, which means they only need limited armour. Also tanks SUCK for urban combat, they don't really mesh well with stairs

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This complexity you speak of exists with any mechanization. Theres a reason why we walk upright. It puts us in line with the gravitational direction of the planet core and grants efficient mobility because of that. A mech would get that very same advantage. Walking on all fours is the very definition of passe'. A spider is even worse.

by Rollinnolan 1 day ago

theres a reason a lot of sci-fi mechs act in support roles and not frontline fighting, its just too vulnerable. take titanfall for example, they are a purely infantry support role, with tanks and stuff being on the frontline

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Full size mechs (such as a Gundam), maybe. Aside from the "it doesn't even look cool" part. However, smaller mechs or exo-suits (such as from the movie Edge of Tomorrow for earth-like environments, or from Avatar for other planet environments) would not only be achievable, but also very practical. Hell, even iron man is technically a mech, and that suit is extremely useful and would have a ton of real world uses (aside from the obvious combat use).

by Frederique83 1 day ago

I mean we have tried tho, we can't get the walking quite right because the legs have to either: mirror the pilot's, which doesn't work unless we can deliver super low latency and force feedback or… run them on an algorithm, which greatly limits the machine‘s movement options.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Really depends on the setting to be honest. Battletech is one of my favorite mech settings and I feel they do the far future mechs a lot better. We didn't get mechs until well after we became space faring and it came down to advanced muscle like hydraulics and the tech to somewhat link our minds to basic systems. At that point in time resources were throughly available and the mechs while slow could easily outrange and armored vehicles. The mechs can handle terrain tanks can't and can be cheaply armed with massive weapons you would need brutally slow tanks to use otherwise. Mechs as an idea right now is obviously dumb but if we had the tech and resources they would be a step up.

Yeah this is why Boston Dynamics is sinking billions of dollars into automated tanks OH WAIT IT'S HUMANS AND DOGS.

OP doesn't even know about Minovsky Particles 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
