I'd say you're not a jerk in a couple circumstances. 1) having the ceiling fan on while having light off 2) your own bedroom light, not affecting anybody who doesn't like it

This feels like a niche situation. Every light with a pull string that I've run into has been because its in a bathroom or somewhere a switch can't be because it could get wet. So there is no switch. The switch should be outside the bathroom, making it more awkward to remember than a pull cord in the bathroom. If the pull switch disables the push switch the push switch will also disable the pull switch. You can get longer pull switch cords. Just replace the pull switch string with a longer one so you can reach it.
