The hoops people jump through to justify their gaming habits is wild, amirite?
by Jermaingrant3 days ago
I'm old and remember when people had this same argument for people that liked to read all the time.
by Terrible-Egg9943 days ago
So then what's your arguement ? Should we not do mundane things ? Are all hobbies pointless ?
by Anonymous3 days ago
So what are you trying to articulate then?
by Travon693 days ago
Why are we censoring covid?
by Samir033 days ago
Are you saying that games aren't social or mentally challenging?
by Leonjacobs3 days ago
Not all of us have addictions to them! Most people who play video games can actually manage their time and enjoy themselves!
by Leonjacobs3 days ago
"I'm not against gaming, I just judge people who game" lol okay then bro. What do you suggest people do besides game? Like specifics? I go shooting, I lift weights, go hiking, but at 3am when there's nothing to do? (I'm also night shift)
by Anonymous3 days ago
This opinion is as old as history. People listen to stories instead of living life? People listen to music instead of living life? People read books? Gasp. I couldn't imagine wanting to escape reality for a moment.

Consider me dumb. What's the difference
by Background_Truck39023 days ago
Well, no... there isn't really a difference at all.
by Anonymous3 days ago
I've been eyeball deep in some pretty immersion book series at 8pm then BAM its 4am and I have to be up for work in 3 hours. If you think an authors sole purpose is not to hook you. I dont know what to tell you except read better books.
by Initial_Sock46113 days ago
You can check out of a game by putting the controller down, putting your phone down, or moving away from the keyboard. Video games require a physical object you have to move and interact with to play. Same with how you put a book down or use the remote to pause the TV for a movie.
by Anonymous3 days ago
So this begs the question, what do you do with your own free time and why do you believe that is superior?
by Middle_Exam3 days ago
You basically said you feel gaming is an inferior way for people to send their time when they could/should be doing other things. Which suggests you feel those other things are a better or more appropriate thing for people to do. I get the argument that people shouldn't just sit and do one single thing and only that. That it's better if people are well rounded humans. But if that was your argument, it shouldn't matter what the hobby is and people who watch a lot of sports or are always working should equally be condemned for their bad excuses justifying their "addiction" to those things. Except you didn't and singled out gaming.
by Middle_Exam3 days ago
You don't have to outright say something to be actually saying it lol, the implication is there and clear as day
by Anonymous3 days ago
I did, you still come off like you think you're better than other people who spend their free time differently than you
by Anonymous3 days ago
Falls flat when it's immediately followed by you detailing how you think it's an issue lol
by Anonymous3 days ago
You're really doing a good job of proving to everyone replying that you're not the asshole you come off as in the OP lmao. Disagreeing with you and pointing out that you're doing what everyone else is also saying you're doing isn't clutching pearls. Like, not even close.
by Anonymous3 days ago
I know people have always judged gamers but it always amazes me how much time people spend caring about what other people are doing with their time. I could not care less if you were gaming 24/7 or the most sociable, outgoing, community serving, world traveler, cultured human being amongst us. If people aren't hurting anyone, I don't know why we care how they want to live their lives.
by Capital_Fig3 days ago
Hey, whatever you need to say to make yourself feel better than other people lol
by Anonymous3 days ago
Your argument is that it's wrong for people to game, something you admittedly do, longer than the exact proscribed amount of time you're okay doing it. I hope you see the problem with that. You don't seem to be talking about actual addiction to gaming. Addiction is bad, regardless of the habit. You seem to be calling it an addiction if they do it more than you do. Without regard for what else they do or what life balance they have. Typically, when I see this type of behavior, the person who is belittling the other persons personal enjoyment as childish or wasteful; usually themselves has a hobby or pursuit that many others would consider wasteful or frivolous. (ie gaming is wasteful and childish, but cosplaying as a football man and pretending I'm part of them team as I scream at the tv every week is totally normal). I don't care if anyone watches football. It's an IRL example I've heard. If you want to determine what a valuable use of your free time is, you're in the right. If you want to make that determination for anyone else, you're in the wrong. Saying people are defensive for discussing and contradicting the point you made is belittling and dismissive language, and the whole premise, as worded, is self-centered.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Why should anybody have to justify it? Yea they're wasting time but so are you, and me and everybody else here. What difference does it make?
by Anonymous3 days ago
I think this entirely depends on your definitions of habit and addiction. If people are spending 16 hours a day gaming and nothing else, including working or socializing or being generally productive, sure. If people are playing like 5 - 10 hours a week as a casual hobby, its fine. Theres a spectrum and the validity of your argument depends how far on the spectrum youre arguing for.

You do understand some of us don't have bodies that work and are in pain 24/7? I'm do glad you cam do other things. But please understand that is a privilege.
by Pale-Repeat82713 days ago
man can't have a hobby? damn. Most gamers are introverted and want nothing to do with others, Don't belittle others lifestyle because you want different things? Grow tf up
by bradley193 days ago
OP, are you saying you don't have any hobbies you dedicate any of your free time to?
by Anonymous3 days ago
I'm saying you probably have hobbies that other people think are silly or a waste of time. I mean that sincerely, no scarsm here. Is that insightful enough for you?
by Anonymous3 days ago
😂😂😂
by Anonymous3 days ago
You seem to care a lot for a guy who says he doesn't care. Have a good night.
by Anonymous3 days ago
I love video games and don't really care how people feel about them. I just do find it a bit odd that a lot of casual habits that people indulge in heavily are not ever under as much scrutiny. It's okay to bed rot and binge a tv show for several hours but god forbid people play a game they enjoy for that same amount of time.
by Anonymous3 days ago
I'd rather play the story than read or watch it. That's the only difference.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Depends on the game in question to be honest. Are we talking rpgs, online pvp, base builders, list goes on and on. Point is, games like pvps for example, I've heard countless times you need to be very active to remain even somewhat competitive these days. Base builders are kind of a given they'll take up your life, they've literally always been that way. RPGs when you say "work through" are you referring to just the main story? What about all the side quests, Easter eggs, etc? I don't really game much anymore, but I'm still pretty well informed from friends and siblings. Personally I wouldn't "live my life" inside a game, but I can definitely see how it'd be easy to do so, and I'm not judging anyone who does either.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Yeah and Elvis shaking his hips is the devil, necxt.
by Anonymous3 days ago
Well multiplayer games are social and there are plenty of games that teach you about a wide variety of things. People will justify anything if it's judged, even if it's normal, because people tend to judge no matter what. As long as there's judgmental people, there will be others trying to justify it. I play video games in my free time sometimes when I have nothing else to do, that's no different from watching a movie or reading. If someone tried to claim me doing any of those things suddenly meant I was addicted to it id probably get a little defensive
by Anonymous3 days ago
Replace this with porn habits and I'm right there with you.
by Fantastic-Log90503 days ago
Ehhh I tend to agree with OP. People like to make fake justifications for why they engage in behavior that the majority of society doesn't support. I am a gamer, I probably play more than I should and need to do a little more reading. I also don't owe anyone an explanation and I don't need excuses. I like it, it's fun to me.
