+95 In Video Games Fast Travel should not be an option unless its true to the lore. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Isn't fast travel in most games just assumed to be your character got there and you just cut to that? Like if I fast travel in GTA I assume my character got a cab or walked or something, not just teleported.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No you can literally get a cab in GTA, so that would be getting a cab.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I think you just have no imagination, you're saying it's immersion breaking, but it's not. Your character gets there, and you just don't watch ot happen. Do you never watch any episode of a TV show out of order, because then you won't see how they got where they are?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I have no imagination, right buddy.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No actual argument, just repeating my statement lol

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You can skip the cab ride

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I've already been to the supermarket in real life but i cannot teleport there now instantly

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You absolutely would if you could though. I play video games to get away from the real world, not to recreate the slog of every day life. I spend 10-20 hours a week commuting back and forth to my job, I don't want to play video game that makes me do the same.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

and you also cant punch people hard enough to make their head explode so whats your point?

by Lubowitzlindsey 2 days ago

Ok then dont use it? Trying to force this opinion on anyone but yourself is rather ironic.

by Middle_Eggplant 2 days ago

You don't need to use fast travel in games

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I can't, but I would if I could.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

So? Who's saying you aren't traveling that way in game? For you the player you get a loading screen, but ingame you are just traveling there, you as the player just gets to skip the time doing it, doesn't make it any less logical.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Okay but you're not forced to use it? It's kinda like saying "gays should be outlawed because I don't like sucking cock" It's not an opinion, it's logically inconsistent

by Royal_Rule_1239 2 days ago

Again, your argument is flawed, if you aren't forced to use it then there's no problem with it being a thing as it doesn't negatively effect you

by Fun-Firefighter-8155 2 days ago

Playing a game in a boring way is on you if there's an option to change it

by Fun-Firefighter-8155 2 days ago

Exactly. No one would do it. That's my point. Which is why you make that type of gameplay interesting by designing the game around it to make it interesting, thereby creating a game that feels different. Not Ubisoft Map Checkbox Simulator 3000.

by EntrepreneurMean 2 days ago

opinion/əˈpɪnjən/noun 1.a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

So you're saying your opinion is not logical

by Far-Radio1945 2 days ago

Yeah but it's like saying ‘I don't like spicy foods, no restaurant should offer spicy foods'

by Far-Radio1945 2 days ago

That's an example of a false equivalence argument. It takes my stance on fast travel and compares it to something unrelated (spicy food preferences) as if they're the same type of situation, even though the two involve completely different contexts and consequences.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Explain how they're falsely equivalent?

by New_Salt678 2 days ago

I'm sorry but if you cannot see how taking away spicey food and removing the option for fast travel are not false equivalents thats on you "False equivalence is a logical fallacy where two things are incorrectly presented as being equal or comparable when significant differences exist between them" In what way is the impact equal?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Just because an opinion doesn't have to be based on fact doesn't mean it can't be critiqued wtf is your argument

by Fun-Firefighter-8155 2 days ago

I played WoW from Vanilla through Shadowlands, I've had more than my share of having to travel a massive game world in real time. I'll tell you this much, it doesn't make the game better.

by Annettawhite 2 days ago

What about in open world games? fast travel is what makes those games somewhat playable

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I kind of get what they mean. The world should be made interesting enough without fast travel. Or fast travel should be incorporated into the world. I like how morrowind does it with boats for shoreline towns and villages, mage guild halls to travel between major cities, silt striders for the interior, and a few spells for specific travel needs. But some games also do well without it by making traveling an undertaking, such as games like outward. I suspect they are mostly annoyed with the skyrim style fast travel. Technically, you could just walk everywhere, but the game clearly is designed around teleporting around the map for the most part.

by shemar78 2 days ago

Same applies,If you fast travel in Cyberpunk 2077 you are missing half of the game

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If half the game is walking from point A to point B then maybe it should be skipped

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I can't believe someone wrote a stupider thing than OP. So you just want pure action all the way through? That would be boring even with the greatest fighting system of all time. You need variety and time to cool off walking in the city and mini games are for that.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yeah, thats exactly what I want. If I want to cool off I'd pause the game and do something else. I don't need a game to pace how much gameplay I can enjoy, I'll do that part myself

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I have fun with games without pacing, I just think you take the medium too seriously. Games can be made just for fun without worrying about being a proper story or being engaging on a deeper level than just being a game. If I wanted a story I'd watch a movie or read a book, games are just for fun

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I see we are talking about completely different games. If there is no story here is nothing to balance with the gameplay so of course then it doesn't matter.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

you try to 100% without any fast travel at all, it would take twice as long

by Worldly-Tower 2 days ago

I did. Twice

by Anonymous 2 days ago

then you realize why its in the game, its an infinite waste of time to go across the map every time you want to do anything regarding 100%

by Worldly-Tower 2 days ago

No the best parts of Cyberpunk 2077 are exploring. We are obviously different gamers and thats fine.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's almost like we have finite time in real life, and many of us don't want to waste a full 5min, or an hour crossing an imaginary landscape when we're playing games to escape? Goddamn this is stupid.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Well then devs should be creative and come up with a way to make it work. Taxi/Tram/Bus/Boat system.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You should play Morrowind. There are boats around the perimeter of the map, mostly to fishing villages and Telvanni towns.Silt striders for most of the interior. Mage's guild between major cities. And finally a bunch of spells to handle specific types of travel.

by shemar78 2 days ago

It's funny too because Morrowind is the only game in the main series without fast travel outside of the options you listed. You can take carriages in Skyrim but fast travel is more convenient. Arena (Elder scrolls 1) and Daggerfall (2) has fast travel without discovery and it takes your character days to travel by horse/ship in those games with options to go "carefully" or not. Its just a dated mechanic to increase your role playing

by Stock-Cash3245 2 days ago

Or just assume the character is traveling the way to that point while you look at a loading screen, doesn't make it unimmersive just because you don't see it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Ah, so fast travel is fine if you pay for it?🙄 Go and attempt to make a game. You have no idea.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This just sounds like an excuse for load screens. Sit and watch your character ride a taxi sounds ridiculous

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Its not that its an unpopular opinion and more you don't understand what fast travel is.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

While I personally love no fast travel not everyone has the time to walk between locations and with an large map it gets tedious fast

by Gudrunjacobs 1 day ago

Exactly my point, this is how it should be handled

by Anonymous 1 day ago

But how is you fast traveling to a city in skyrim unimmersive? I just always imagined that while I see a loading screen, the character in game is traveling there, the only difference is that I don't need to sit and watch, like taking a nap in a car while someone else is driving, after I wake up time has passed and I'm there.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

All games where there is fast travel can be explained with something that you are looking for. It's just not shown. You know they didn't waste time and resources on useless stuff like animated a ten seconds cut scene of getting on a horse and getting off a horse when you get there. Since that adds nothing to the game and everyone hated them when they were a thing for a brief period of time. Let me guess you also want to have a full explanation for respawning as well? All of these are in the game for player convenience and quality of life.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I genuinely never got the "I want the games to be as realistic as possible" approach. When I play a game I want to have fun and for the fun to be seamless. If I wanted something to be realistic I would just go outside.

by Flashy-Result-8762 1 day ago

A good fast travel system is one that you don't want to use Few games do this well

by frederiquestamm 1 day ago

You arent forced to use it

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I quickly realised that when i got told Im stupid and have no imagination yet they can't realise there are different types of gamers out there lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

How isn't it in the lore? You go to town A, then you move on to some more towns, and then later on you want to go back, fast travel just makes you go there faster, at least for you the player, but in game lore wise you are just walking/traveling the distance, the only difference is just that you as the player don't need to spend the time to go there. How doesn't that make sense in game? That is how more or less all fast travel works. Also why does it even need to be true to the lore? Games are meant to be fun, not 100% accurate, and no one is forcing you to use it, in plenty of games I never use it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's a game

by Bulky_Profession4569 1 day ago

There does tend to be an in game explanation Your character walked there, you just didn't see it Games like Skyrim have actual time pass, noticeable if you travel far enough that it goes from bright sunny day to middle of the night I don't disagree that more diagetic/"realistic" fast travel would be more interesting, like a vehicle ride or proper, lore based teleportation system. But also, you have two separate arguments here 1. Fast travel should only be immersive 2. People miss out on the world if they fast travel They don't entirely correlate. Game could have the coolest, most sensible fast travel…. And if people choose to use it, they're still missing out on the actual walking anyway

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Finally, someone that gets it!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So, like Morrowind? Mark and Recall, jump good, fly or just take a Silt Strider.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sure but also there comes a point where running around becomes more or less an interactive loading screen cause all the interesting side stuff is done.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Perfect!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Of course that comes with the caveat that the Dark Souls 1 world was incredibly interconnected with discoverable shortcuts leading everywhere

by Fantastic_Wasabi 1 day ago

Thoroughly disagree. Making players suffer for "immersion" in the world is bad design.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Exactly lol apparently i have no imagination, i have no idea how game design works ect.... Its like i shat in their cereal

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Did you expect everyone to agree with you?

by No_Rock_5995 1 day ago

What do you mean "true to the lore"? You don't need to have dragons flying or teleportation circles to justify it, you can just say it's a timeskip.

by PathEnvironmental 1 day ago

Screwing over the player for the sake of "immersion" is NOT good game design.
