+50 the song "Imagine" sucks, amirite?

by elnoraadams 2 days ago

"What do you think George Harrison of The Beatles?"

by Aromatic_Purpose788 2 days ago

Look! I'm a Walrus!

by Juddrolfson 2 days ago

I'm Paul McCartney… the leader of the Beatles

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Never liked Imagine, or John Lennon, for that matter. Give me Ozzy's Dreamer over Imagine any day of the week. Much better message and tone.

by RemoteAd4479 2 days ago

I can't say that "Dreamer," is better necessarily. But it's a really beautiful and well-written song.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You have to factor in that most people, and I'm talking the vast majority of people do not have any clue about the personal life of most artists or celebrities. Most people don't even know the lyrics to a song or really pay attention to them. For Imagine, it's a song that sounds good and people like it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Lennon beating Yoko isn't some underground knowledge There are tons of people that enjoy The Beatles that couldn't tell you their names, let alone if one was abusive or not.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

That doesn't mean it's still not relatively common knowledge. It just means the Beatles are a massively popular band.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's not common knowledge just because you say it is

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I imagine there are a massive number of people who would say they like the Beatles if asked who don't even know who Yoko is. Especially younger people. There's a lot of pop culture in the world, and most people don't deeply follow most of it. Especially stuff that happened before they were born. Most people offline are casual fans of things.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

So many of them might have heard this as a factoid once or twice, and then proceeded to delete this from memory immediately. And all in all I think they're right, it's celebrity gossip, who cares? If the song sounds good to you, that's all that matters.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No but the man died 45 years ago, so how many young people are seeking out John Lennon facts in their spare time?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You're right, it's not. It's a lie. Literally nobody has ever accused him of beating Yoko, not even Yoko herself. It was Cynthia he hit, she said he hit her once. He admitted it multiple times, recognised it and was very open about it describing himself as a misogynistic in his younger days. He said part of the reason he sang about peace was because he recognised how wrong he was and how violence hurts people. This weird thing ignorant people do where they bring up John Lennon being abusive all the time is getting so ridiculous to the point people are now just straight up lying about it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This weird thing ignorant people do where they bring up John Lennon being abusive all the time is getting so ridiculous to the point people are now just straight up lying about it. People tend to say this about guys who hit women, who would've known?!

by reese27 2 days ago

It always felt hypocritical to me. I don't need an extremely rich guy telling me to imagine a world with no possessions. Bitch, when I first heard this song in college, I literally had no possessions. No need to "imagine" it. Unlike the celebrities who thrive and enrich themselves off of the capitalist system.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

lmao that's great

by elnoraadams 2 days ago

"Imagine no possessions, it's easy if you've already bought all of them…" Always hated this lame ass song, and I've loved the Beatles since I was like 8.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

He wants YOU to imagine it as one of us poors!

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Me, too. I love the Beatles but I cannot stand this song. For exactly the reason you just said.

by AlfalfaEmbarrassed26 1 day ago

Exactly. Not a Beatles song though. John Lennon, solo (sorry for being pedantic)

by Glittering_Army9725 1 day ago

Yeah, I always found it HELLA choice that he'd be all "give up everything you own" while playing an expensive white grand piano in his mansion.

by Juddrolfson 1 day ago

I remember seeing an interview where the host made this very point. Lennon became angry and asked what he was supposed to do, give it away?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

in that case you might like "Only a Fool Would Say That" by Steely Dan. it's never been confirmed, but the theory is he wrote this to roast John Lennon for writing Imagine lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

True story and a great song. Also, giant brass balls to roast a beatle on your debut lol

by Few-Illustrator-3416 1 day ago

Steely Dan continuing to be incredibly based as always

by FeelingElderberry259 1 day ago

Great song, didn't know the background though. That's hilarious.

by elnoraadams 1 day ago

I myself am a massive die hard Beatles fan and ADORE Imagine as a song, but even I can admit roasting a Beatle on your debut album takes balls

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just because I want to mention this fellas name any chance I get because I find it hilarious and his music is actually pretty cool - Jazz pianist Dick Hyman has a fantastic album called Moog and Me from 1969, one of the great early attempts at electronic music

by After_Look 1 day ago

If that generation felt unheard, it was completely incorrect; it was the most-heard generation in American history.

by Mean-Ad 1 day ago

Not an American so I cannot relate.

by AlfalfaEmbarrassed26 1 day ago

I see what you're saying, but you might want to read up on the Vietnam war.

by Early_Plastic1942 1 day ago

I've read a lot about it, including from the North Vietnamese side. Have you?

by Mean-Ad 1 day ago

How are you measuring that?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The fact that you know the names of a lot of young people from the 60s and 70s, as opposed to any other two-decade period in American history, is a good indicator.

by Mean-Ad 1 day ago

'Imagine' is not a particularly compelling work. 'Stairway to heaven' is a very well-crafted song.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Stairway to Heaven is still a good song at the end of the day at least. Imagine not so much.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You mention "Stairway". I'm curious what your issues are with the song and what song should replace it as one of the most requested rock songs (a simple sign of popularity still in use today) today, 54 years later. Thanks.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

i get more excited to randomly hear NSYNCs Bye bye bye come on than any Beatles song

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Horrible song and not even the worst Lennon did.

by Easy_Abies 1 day ago

Fully agree. Still dislike "Imagine" though. It's cheesy, naive and preachy same as young people today It's already been mentioned here, but if you agree, definitely check out Steely Dan's song "Only A Fool Would Say That" which drags John Lennon for "Imagine" and in general

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes, it reminds me so much of today's idiot idealists. Like the people who complain about climate change but refuse to take the bus.

by AlfalfaEmbarrassed26 1 day ago

lol this song is the definition of therapy culture.

by elnoraadams 1 day ago

At the time, the US was losing their pointless war in Vietnam. The song was relevant and had nothing to do with the fake first world therapy issues of today. Musicians used to say something about the state of the world. And yeah, the guy was a rock star (which also don't exist today). Rock stars historically weren't the best people when it came to their personal relationships with women and their kids. So what. He was an important musician

by Mclaughlinjohn 1 day ago

anything too stupid to be said is sung

by Quirky_Barracuda 1 day ago

Yes.

by Ok_Fondant4795 1 day ago

It's not even the best song on that album.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

How do you sleep? goes hard

by elnoraadams 1 day ago

Most people don't know the Beatles' names.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Idk id say its well written to be such an iconic song. You liking it or not doesnt really matter

by Osinskiwilhelm 1 day ago

A Perfect Circle did a cool very dark sounding cover of this song that I enjoy.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I just find it boring and always have

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes but at the time there wasn't as much info on Lennons personal life back then. Now we have the internet but aside from tabloids and press interviews they had no idea who he was as a person.

by Bergstromprince 1 day ago

Say what you will, but the song has a great chorus with a hook built right in. The piano part is instantly identifiable. The historical context is whole other story. I am no Beatles homer either. It's fine you don't like it. But to suggest it sucks with your stated justification shows some ignorance on your part. That said, it's your opinion and I'm pretty sure it's an unpopular one. So you have come to right place.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Beetles are a boy band.

by reese27 1 day ago

Idk, the song did it for me, and I'm not even a fan of him or the Beatles, so much. But that one resonated and still does. Sorry it didn't work for you. Dunno what to tell ya.

by Lakinreinhold 1 day ago

100% agree, I have always hated this song

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not that deep; and most of your idols are scumbags so who cares.

by YardSea1456 1 day ago

Contrary, have you ever listened to anything outside of classic rock?

by ConstantCapital4413 1 day ago

Absolutely. I play and listen to jazz regularly.

by Lillianaswaniaw 1 day ago

lol that is the opposite end of the technical spectrum for me, when complex theory becomes too forefront, dissonant and annoying in the way that prog can be pretentious. Just my opinion.

by ConstantCapital4413 1 day ago

Haha righto. Saying the Beatles music is all simple is just demonstrably false and is not a matter of opinion. Absolutely dumb.

by Lillianaswaniaw 1 day ago

By today's standards it absolutely is simple. That's indisputable. I'm a huge Black Sabbath fan, but even I have to acknowledge that it is DATED. People are just better musicians now. The global village has allowed people to share ideas, get better, faster, more catchy, more nuanced, everything.

by ConstantCapital4413 1 day ago

Please explain how they changed music forever. We'll wait…

by ConstantCapital4413 1 day ago

Not my job to catch you up on basic music knowledge sorry

by Destineewuckert 1 day ago

Basic music knowledge? Or pop culture and the British Invasion? Music is cultural, but culture doesn't define music. They didn't revolutionize anything outside their bubble

by ConstantCapital4413 1 day ago

Don't cut yourself on all that edge dude!

by Destineewuckert 1 day ago

Concerningly poor take

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes, your ignorance is concerning

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Project much?

by ConstantCapital4413 1 day ago

Lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Apparently no one hear can imagine All they hear is the person that's singing the song Kinda ironic The lyrics don't mean what you think Look past the human

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Begging your pardon but how do we ignore the person while trying to figure out the meaning? The author is the context of the lyrics.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The music sucks

by elnoraadams 1 day ago

Hot take, most of the Beatles discography is hot trash

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Dumb and demonstrably false take.

by Lillianaswaniaw 1 day ago

I agree, never been a fan. Possibly the most boring mainstream band from the British rock era.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What a brave take

by Destineewuckert 1 day ago

I never understood the appeal. Their music always seemed childish to me, even when I was a child.

by raynorisidro 1 day ago

Art is timing. It seems obvious to you now, but during its release it was probably very eye opening. Lennon ha daplit from the Beatles and he wrote a very iconic melody and lyrics. Combine that with minimum production and i feel it's still a classic till this day.
