+53 A lot of movies are trash nowadays, so when an average movie gets released, we praise it, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Hot take but truly seasoned film goers know to take any advertisement with a grain of salt and not have literal expectations going in. Plus the filmmakers don't owe it to you to make the movie you decided it should be before you saw it.

Preach. I'm disappointed by Osgood Perkins movies every time I go to see one because it's not the movie I built up in my mind. On the other hand, I'm always delighted to go see an Osgood Perkins movie because he shows me something I don't expect. Day 1 November 15th, I'll be there for Keeper.

They don't owe you the thing they advertised? Huh?

The director of the film isn't in charge of the marketing.

Is the company the 'filmmaker' that was mentioned in the OP, which you disagreed with, or are you saying you define the production company as the filmmaker?

by Independent_Sea_7635 2 days ago

Brother if they released all of the "classics" today most people would call them mid

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I said before that if the Godfather was released today it would be a box office bomb because people just don't have the attention span that movie requires.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Exactly. You watch some of those old movies and realize how bad the acting is, how bad the cinematography is, but that's what it was then. Most of the praise for such things is based on nostalgia. I've made the same argument about the band queen. Everyone loves queen. Even I like a lot of queen. But, if queen had never existed, and a band made that exact music now, they would be ridiculed endlessly.

Queens much different though because the type of music that is popular now is nowhere near what queen makes but the type of movies that were made in the early 80's are still being made now.

Most of movies in every decade were trashy

by Anonymous 2 days ago

And still gave some of them a chance because there were so much fewer of them. And because we were fine with lower quality if it meant we get to spend some fun time with the family in front of TV 🙂

It's noticeable right before a season launches, often during and sometimes a bit after as well. Well, for those whose streamers can afford it, I guess.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I feel like it's normal for fans to get excited about something before it releases?

by Independent_Sea_7635 1 day ago

This idea comes across all types of media. People really overestimate how many good films were released in each like 5 year span.

by IndividualTadpole 1 day ago

And they'll make loads of the best movies to come out in a 5 year span and not many of them still hold up. That's why there's so few 1982's and 1994's.

Too many people took a film class in university in the past thirty years.

movie points lol

Weapons seems like the kind of movie that 50% of people are just not gonna get and the other 50% will love. Like any prestige horror type of movie

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Opinion immediately disregarded because you can't genuinely think Weapons is horrible lmao

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's better than Sinners imo

by Anonymous 1 day ago

EXACTLY that's so true I agree like with my friend she is just most of the time happy to be out the house and watch a movie so she says every movie is good when we finish watching it but since I really watch so much indie horror and different types of movies I know what's actually hitting …I have yet to see something as good as the movie "Drag me to hell" or anything from Guillermo del Toro

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So your opinion matters more than your friends because you believe to have a more refined taste in movies? You know what's actually hitting…? Sorry pal, but it sounds like your friend is just enjoying movies and your self imposed elitist attitude keeps you from doing the same.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I disagree strongly, the average moviegoer has far better taste and media literacy than they did 30+ years ago.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It only seems like movies are trash "nowadays" because nowadays is when you're alive. We only know about the good movies from thenadays because those movies broke out, but there plenty of terrible movies during those times as well.

by durganedgardo 1 day ago

Most people get way too caught up in small details to ever enjoy a movie.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I have seen a bunch of very good movies. If you're only watching the most hyped ones, I don't know what to tell you. I feel like a movie addict would know better

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think a lot of people forget that a lot of our coolest movies are actually pretty cheesy and also a lot of them came from mid-level studios that just don't exist anymore.

by Danieltia 1 day ago

I was totally a movie guy. Being born in '77, I've seen a lot. Nowadays, very few move the needle for me. The only movie I left the theatre feeling I saw something special was Dune 2. Further, to your point, I like watching movies with my nine-year-old son. It seems like the majority of the movies I show him are from the 80s and 90s… with some current superhero stuff, which he likes sprinkled in. My own movie bias?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Looking at you, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once...

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Whether it's trash or not, I think as long you enjoyed a movie that's all that matters.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I agree, it's so crazy how low standards have gotten

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Totally agree, I think the last great movie that Hollywood has made was Pitch Perfect

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Most of the movies I've seen this year have been weak. Sinners, Superman, Fantastic Four, War of the Worlds, Naked Gun.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sinners sucked. Weapons was amazing
