You'll be left with about 5 farmers and a small market.

Perfect

What about local craftspeople like wood turners, pottery makers, etc? Bakers, prep food, cider makers? Expanding it beyond produce sellers helps event out the demand through the growing seasons and to a certain level helps keep the market funded to stay open

I have no problem with that. I'm mostly taking about small drop shipping businesses/non handmade items

Gotcha. Fortunately I've yet to really experience any of those at the two markets I go to. I can totally understand your reservations

MLMs shouldn't be allowed at any kind of small business event.

Our local one has been changed to a 'Makers Market', however I am glad to report that it is still mostly foodstuffs getting sold there.

The farmers market close to my house is now all food trucks and scentsy resellers.

And produce grown by the actual farmer. Far too many retailers cosplaying as farmers too.

Yes!!

I agree. I want actual farmers/homesteaders who grow their own produce and manage their own animals. None of the grocery store reselling.

Lol, as a farmers' market baker, I slightly agree. Crafts are necessary to fill space, but the focus should always be on the farmers and food producers. At my markets, you are not allowed to resell products or sell other people's products, nor is MLM allowed, so that part isn't an issue. There aren't enough farmers to fill a market. We need bakers and crafters to fill the space and bring a mix of customers.

I went to a farmers market and a lady next to me asked where the blueberries were from and the vendor said Peru, I live in Canada you would assume you are getting food locally but I guess not 🤷

I got frustrated trying to apply for our big farmers market because they require all sorts of proof for handmade sellers, yet allow this crap op described. I haven't looked at it again.

My neighborhood farmers market in Portland was 75% farmers and 25% locally made food products (bread, hot sauce etc). It was awesome. All I want at my farmers markets is food; if I want a craft fair I'll go to a craft fair.

It does not support OP. There is a market with lots of business going on. 20 vendors are having a good day selling products. And people are buying things from those 20 non-food vendors. There is a demand for it. The food vendors do more business because of the crafts that are there. Everyone wins. Why would you mess with that?

The issue is that these markets are being overrun, at least in my area, with junk. If it was just one or two booths you could just keep walking, but it's slowly becoming harder and harder to find not cheap trinkets
