+69 Barnes & Noble is one of the worst options for consuming books, amirite?

I'll use small local bookstores more when they actually organize their shelves. 90% of local stores, everything is spread out in cute and "quirky" themes and staff picks and "this just in!". I just want to go to the section I want and find the author I want using good old alphabetical order, please. Buy a space larger than a coat closet if you want to also display curated collections.

Also in defense of B&N or other online retailers like Better World Books, bigger selection means I'm more likely to find what I'm looking for if I have something specific in mind. Recently I was looking for a copy of Three Body Problem and had to try two different small book stores. Second one only had the one copy so still got a bit lucky

That's totally fair and I know a lot of people that prefer B&N for this very reason. I don't really mind where people get their books, as long as it's not from Amazon lol

I'm absolutely not pro-Amazon. If Amazon takes over, it's from people buying on Amazon.

by faheylenora 2 weeks ago

I agree but shhhhhhh! If other people don't waste their money at Barnsey then I don't get my cheep books and used book stores and thrift stores.

If you support Amazon over a physical store for buying books you are just supporting the idea that you don't need to see it before you buy it, and reducing employment in your area. Local stores mean local jobs. And in order to have products on the shelves they have to also pay for the building and those shelves. As for buying second hand? Well, how do you think those books got to the used book store to begin with? And the library does have books, but if everyone only used the library, who would write the books they were not being paid for? Your opinion is that of an entitled child who has no concept of how the world works.

Is this unpopular? At least amongst book people I feel like the general encouragement is libraries or independent bookstore options. I mainly hear about Barnes and Noble in the context of you know what you are generally going to find and in some areas it's the only physical bookshop to browse around for miles.

I'm of the position that it's the best choice for many outside of Amazon. Telling people to shop independently owned local stores when there is no local is not helpful. At least if you buy it from a physical store, it's supporting locals even if it's a corporation. I fear a future where there is no specialty stores and everything is an Amazon, target or Walmart warehouse. At least B&N is a bookstore and not a general retailer with a book section.

& why would i be referring to anyone without local or used stores as an option?

by faheylenora 2 weeks ago

You can focus on more than one issue at once. I recognize there's bigger issues & still shop local

by faheylenora 2 weeks ago

I don't know, i see Barnes and Noble as trendy and all over online right now with the rise of booktok

by faheylenora 2 weeks ago

Yup, wouldn't wanna use some insidious chain that overcharges people. That's why I use Amazon /s

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I don't shop Amazon

by faheylenora 2 weeks ago

Agreed! We go to local book stores, half price books, and we use the library a lot.

Mass-market paperback YA novels are what people want to read.

Nice try, Meg Ryan from you've got mail

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

We don't have any local bookstores.

Disagree had a great time there on a date. Bought a great book. Independent bookstores are fine too of course, but they don't always have what you want. And the same could be said for B&N.

Barnes and Noble books are no more expensive than indie book stores you just feel better about yourself.

by Carley64 2 weeks ago

Does this mean I should rethink in applying there

"Shill for mass market tropey paperback" Aka the only thing keeping the lights on for every book store, Barnes and Noble or otherwise If it weren't for a large volume people consistently coming in and dropping 20$ on Romantasy 10 times a year, they'd go out of business curating to niche collections of snobs like you

by Important_Version944 2 weeks ago

You described how Barnes and Nobles always was.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

B&N and Amazon are definitely about one in the same Terrible take

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

A small local store wouldn't be any more likely to carry those. Leibers last published book was from what, the 80s? Any place you can buy DVDs probably doesn't have copies of Citizen Kane, either
