It is not rude to not immediately respond to a call or text. amirite?
by domingodeckow2 weeks ago
This is unpopular?
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Yeah, "I don't owe my friends or family anything, not even a polite response" is unpopular.

Agreed. I don't think it's unpopular though. Just the minority are very loud.

I think it is regional as well as age bracket. Because where I live now people take it way too seriously. I had several coworkers regularly text me at 11:30 at night to plan for work. Nah, you will hear from me at 8 AM. But that could also be more about work boundaries too.

Definitely work boundaries for that specific example. I'm sleeping at that time. I regularly have my phone on silent and I'm a very busy person. I will respond/call back when it's the best time for me. But those who know me, know that if its an emergency, call me 3 times in a row within 5 minutes and my phones ringer will turn on and I'll know this is something I need to answer. They also know if they abuse that feature, there will be consequences lol I am not available just whenever

I'm 45 and I have to let EVERYONE know on a REGULAR basis that I do not have my phone on me at all times and it might be a bit before I get back to you. Surprisingly my mother and sisters were the biggest offenders before I had to go NC.

Some people foam at the mouth to know they aren't the center of someone else's world. The concepts of "privacy" and "unavailable" are foreign to them, so they assume the same of everyone else:

I'm guessing you're young. By your 30s everyone kinda figures this out because life kind of forces you to. I agree with you of course, but I think this might be an age bracket thing.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
I'm in my 30s. Older coworkers and friends and family absolutely expect my availability and it is a hill they'd die on.
by domingodeckow2 weeks ago
Then let them die on it.

i hate phone calls but i usually don't mind replying to texts immediately

I just assume if people phone me it's time-sensitive in some way. People who know me know I don't want to be contacted constantly. I wouldn't want to not be able to help a loved one who genuinely needed it at that moment, so I answer the phone. Outside of that I will operate on my time. Your catch up text can wait until I see fit.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
If someone texts you and you don't have time for a conversation, just say hey let's chat later. Then be present later for the full conversation. Too many people start a conversation and drag it out all day because "they're busy."
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
I get that but certainly if you go on break or something you can respond
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Break? Lol. Doctors don't get breaks.

This does just read like you're an asshole. "I don't owe you an explanation" Okay but why are you acting like this. Just be nice to people in your life. It doesn't take that long to type "Sorry got an appointment"
