Alright I didn't know I was ignorant for not "disinfecting" my vegetables. What does that even mean? I run most of them under water, are you spraying them with lysol? Now, be honest... You are a chicken washer aren't you?

You should wash your fruits/ vegetables with baking soda or vinegar. Tho they are being rude they are right. Aside from sanitary reasons, pesticides are worse than you might think and simply washing with water doesn't get it all off. Got my pesticide license and it really freaked me out. A little bit of consumption over many years adds up to a lot

Ok maybe I'm germophobic but my father and grandfather brought a lot of fresh produce direct from the field because of their work and it was always the norm to wash and disinfect it.
by Dependent_Kick_15302 weeks ago
What do you disinfect it with?
by smithamdedric2 weeks ago
You be missing out man. Some of the nurses I work with sure can cook! We get some foreign nurses sometimes and they'll bring in traditional foods or snacks, it's great! Idk, but as a 25 year old guy I secretly look forward to the potlucks.

What are you disinfecting!?
by Old_Bad2 weeks ago
Everything that comes from the earth? As I put on other reply, my father and grandfather brought a lot of fresh produce because of their work in the fields, so yeah we wash and disinfect EVERYTHING.
by Dependent_Kick_15302 weeks ago
Huh? Potlucks have been a thing at work and in my family for decades.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
Yeah, I remember them way more in the 70s. It seemed like once at least once a month at church, family, or my parent's friends houses there was a potluck meal.
by Minute-College26552 weeks ago
I think our Methodist church had a monthly potluck.

Ok, good point I think I'm thinking more of the Potluck at school/work. Something not family oriented.

I've been eating at potlucks my whole life and have never once gotten sick from it. Unless you have a really fragile immune system, it's not going to harm you. Also, extenuating circumstances aside, disinfecting vegetables really isn't necessary, especially if you're cooking them. I rinse them with water, and the heat takes care of the rest. Germaphobes like you don't seem to realize that our bodies can handle a little dirt and bacteria. We need good bacteria in our lives! Not enough exposure to germs is most likely why we have so many damn food allergies nowadays.

in general i like potlucks. my main issue is that a lot of people apparently don't consider food safety. you might sometimes get someone that brings food in a crockpot and has it running till eating so there's no question of the danger zone, but, at least from my own experience, that doesn't seem to be the case. for instance, we had an xmas potluck one year, and everyone went and put their food in the conference room as soon as they got there. no warmer, no fridge [there wasn't any room anyways]. every single time we have a potluck i've noticed no one even tries to keep the food at a safe temperature and doesn't show any concern about whether it will be or not. or maybe i just have a very weak stomach [i do, but still].

Potlucks have been around since before you were born. They run a risk that yes you could ingest a problem food that wasn't prepped that cleanly. You have this risk at restaurants too. Unless you're immuno-compromised or allergic to something it's not going to kill you. I have bigger fish to worry about and will gladly partake. This is a problem in your head, it isn't as big as you make it out to be. I will agree that work using potlucks as a morale buffer vs actually treating employees like people is a crap thing do.

I have a littleeeeeee littleeeee faith in they have to have a baseline standard because of health regulations but yeah I can see what you mean.
by Dependent_Kick_15302 weeks ago
Potlucks and the like have been common for ages, and regardless your complaints are hardly unique to those anyway. You just seem to be excessively germaphobic.

Every office I've worked at since I was an intern in the 90's has had potlucks, where are you getting the idea that this is a nowadays phenomenon?
by Travis742 weeks ago
Out of my distressingly long life (I didn't expect to still be alive at this point) only once have I ever heard a pot luck horror story from my family. Everyone who ate the taco meat at that one got food poisoning. I'm glad I wasn't there.

Oh good grief. Potlucks are not "suddenly" everywhere. They were certainly common enough when I was growing up. Personally, I love getting a free meal! And no, when I'm asked for a meal at a friend's I don't inspect their kitchen in advance to be sure it's clean enough. I have to say not eating something at a buffet because it's "not store bought" is either wildly overreacting or is rage bait.
by Anonymous2 weeks ago
If anything potlucks are less common cause people are more isolated/not participating in general.
