+27 Internet Famous people shouldn't be considered celebrities, amirite?

What kind of weight do you think the word "celebrity" should carry besides simply meaning "a famous person"?

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

People who OP thinks are worthy of the title. AKA, it's a self-defining narrative.

Well I suppose the first part would have to be someone you can recognize outside of the internet. Someone who you may have seen in a movie, from a song, a magazine etc. the next part is someone who has training and knowledge in the career they have taken on. (Example: people who pursue acting may have studied it in college. Or they trained with someone for a role etc.) considered a professional in their field that is NOT connected to the internet. So someone who's a "professional instagramer" wouldn't count. I might think of something else.

I saying people who are consumed in that fashion. It's not a matter of what I personally believe should make a person a celebrity. Sure, the leader is Turkmenistan is probably a celebrity in Turkmenistan because they are in the medias I previously mentioned and a famous person - just not here in the US.

I think I get what you're saying but I think the issue is you putting too much weight on what the word "celebrity" means, not people using it wrong. By definition it just means "famous person" some people are famous for their accomplishments and artistry and some aren't. Just like there are some incredibly talented and skilled people who are not celebrities. The problem isn't that too many people are considered celebrities, the problem is implication that fame inherently equates to merit.

No the literal definition of celebrity is just a famous person. I was having this conversation with my friends and we looked it up. I'm just saying that there should be some kind of distinction or a word for celebrities who aren't famous from the internet

who

I don't know who Kai Cenat is. Someone that is famous, is just that. There are plenty of talentless celebrities. Why not add more to the list? Lol

Livestreamer. I don't personally watch him, because I refuse to engage with Twitch or general livestreams, but he's most certainly famous.

There are YouTubers who are amongst the most famous people in the world at this point. It's likely at this point that Mr. Beast is more recognizable amongst the general population than the vast majority of what you would call traditional celebrities. The world has changed.

If anything I find it more impressive to build a following online. Most people in Hollywood are nepo babies.

Your whole reasoning can be summed up as "they are different just because."

Photographers are celebrities? I feel like this example is a great demonstration of a celebrity being whoever you think is famous/influential. I don't think I can name any photographer ever

by Particular-Emu3986 20 minutes ago

I can name an automotive photographer (Alex Penfold) but that's only because I'm in automotive circles and they come up a lot. Outside of that, I wouldn't expect anyone to know about them
