+27 "look it up" is the worst possible response to a general question. amirite?

Ok but again…why does anyone need to do that for anyone else…?

not only does it push this narrative that technology is taking over look it up IN A BOOK

The irony of that statement LOL!!!!! People who say that are saying "at least try looking for the answer because it's easy to look up". OP is over here like "Chat GPT wont tell me, why can't you just tell me?"

Even in person it makes more sense to encourage someone to look it up on their own time than just believe someone who may not be an expert. I also hear "look it up" most often AFTER the person already explained as a way of saying "fact check me" or "look it up, you'll see I'm right"

But do we really trust Google with information these days ? that's the question

But did you look it up?

by Ritchieemmanuel 3 hours ago

I mean, look it up. Don't make people do the work for you.

I've been personally conflicted about this for a while, actually. I don't believe that it's someone else's responsibility to educate you (unless you have a prior arrangement, of course lol). Especially if you are online— it's just as easy to look info up yourself then ask somebody else (and faster, and you can check sources). However, if you want people to be proactive in learning.. it's not helpful to make them feel stupid and give commands (anyone would be defensive in that situation). I think we need to brainstorm a better way to say this.

To me, "look it up" encourages people to do their own research and fact checking instead of blindly believing someone else's conviction. Fact check everything, even me, tell me if I'm wrong. There's nothing wrong with pointing someone towards a more credible source. Too many people blindly believe misinformation other people give.

If you're not googling it first to get some basic context before bringing your questions to people, you're wasting people's time.

How else are you supposed to argue with facts if looking it up isnt an option? I can explain whatever I want but without a credible source its just your words vs mine

by yoreilly 1 hour ago

Link your source instead of having them look it up themselves

by CompoteDelicious7688 1 hour ago

When I say to look something up it's very much because I believe you won't believe me even if I tell you the exact same thing I'm telling you to look up

Overly general questions are the exact type of question "look it up" makes the most sense for. Don't drag your lazy ass online asking other people to do the bare minimum work for you. Take the time to look up the basics that have already been organized and documented out there (again, bare minimum), and when you tried to learn but aren't understanding some parts, then ask for help using specific questions targeted to your problem if you can't find any answers through searching. Even if you found answers and just want to hear people's perspectives, a specific question is way better suited to this than a broad one. If you did search and couldn't find info, then it's fine to ask, but I would usually tell people that so they know I at least tried. People document things and create learning resources etc for a reason. So you can access it any time, and not use people's time explaining the same info over and over. You should take advantage of that.

What if you don't know the answer? It seems like a legitimate response.
