+85 "Respect is earned" is a toxic mindest (round 3) amirite?

I think there are different forms of respect. For example, there is a basic form of respect for a person's humanity, and that is unearned. There are also forms of respect that are context-specific and earned. For example, I might respect you as a coworker, but you have to earn that respect by performing well over time.

R.A. Salvatore has a short story (I think) where a main character of his, Drizzt, muses on this. I agree with you, respect is baseline.

You are disrespecting people who say that phrase by deliberatly misinterpreting what they say. You are thinking about decency.

Due to the fact the primary definition of respect is admiration, I have always and exclusively said and understood the phrase in question to mean: "admiration is earned not given". And this is because people not worthy of admiration often wish to be treated with admiration and not merely with regard.

I give everyone basic respect until proven unworthy. I'm not going around looking for problems so it's easy
