I'd argue that Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton are pretty mainstream, but i agree with your list

How is this an unpopular opinion? Country music is very popular with many people.

I think when most people say this they're talking about bro country which is country music made by people wearing 3K dollar jeans and have never seen a field. As opposed to people like Parton, Rogers, or Cash, or even the generation after them like Hill, McGraw and Brooks.

Its the 5th highest selling/streaming genre of music. How is that unpopular?

I hate it and always have sorry lol the twangy sound just doesn't do it for me. This goes back to when I was a kid and my dad always played country in the car. I don't disrespect people who do like it, but I'm changing the song any time a country song comes on. We all have different tastes.

That's one thing I think most people can agree with. "We all have different tastes". I personally prefer the old Cowboy Music, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, that sort, but I actually don't listen to music much at all. Something I picked up being a heavy equipment operator, I prefer to listen to my machines so I know if there's something wrong.

Things would be easier if we could all agree on and accept that, but sadly many don't and take it very personally if you don't like their music, favorite movies, or tastes in food among many other things.
by Anonymous2 days ago
I may be wrong but I think there are more people who do agree with it than either of us realize. For me, how I respond depends a lot on how people treat me.

Exactly

It's so generic and formulaic. I would link the video where it's just country songs playing and they all are identical. Same reason why I dislike a lot of pop and hip hop.

I am Irish and can say that some American country is good. Some is very good. Chris Stapleton, Zac Brown, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, all great. However, its popularity here 20 to 30 years ago led to the creation of Irish country music and it is largely awful.

You're telling me the country that prides itself on its love of bagpipes has terrible taste in music? I'm shocked.
by Anonymous2 days ago
I like old country, particularly Hank Williams Sr. But the genre has basically been the exact same thing since the 90s. It's so polished and "by the book" these days. I don't see the appeal, it's pop music with a twang. And then you hear the singers speak normally and they don't have half the accent they do when they sing. So it ends up feeling fake too.

Country is all about lyrics. There are exceptions, but for the most part the music is "all the same". For those people who just dont like that whole twangy thing, it's off-putting. That's why there are people who like "anything but country".

Isn't all music mostly all the same? That's how you define the genre - it sounds similar
