It depends on the dish as a whole, because you're talking about "soak up other food". If the potato is there for the sake of complimenting other ingredients, yeah a lot of people leave chunks of potato in their dish. Meanwhile a lot of "soup-like" dish prefers having no chunks. TLDR: to say something like your title is stupid, because it's different from dish to dish.

Not for me, it's my opinion for all dishes. Calling the title stupid is illogical since I'm stating my unpopular opinion. It's actually very clear and descriptive. Feel free to disagree but keep it civil.
