The basic of advertising is that: it's never about people like you. They don't care about you who have no needs about the product. They care when: "OMG LOOK AT THIS ADS IT'S OBNOXIOUS" Obnoxious ads LIKE THIS ONE doesn't work That's free marketing. And they just need those to work once or twice with somebody else (NOT YOU) and it's a success.

This is how those false mobile game ads work. The ad shows a made up game. This ad is designed to do one thing: get as many people as possible to download the game. Now, since it's a lie, 99% of the people who download the game only to discover the game isn't what the ad says, are going to immediately uninstall. But this doesn't matter. Because .01% are going to see the generic town builder game it actually is and keep playing. An even smaller fraction is going to spend money. A lot of money. So much money, that all those other people don't matter at all. The ad is just a filter, designed to drag as many people through it as possible while the game is designed to seek out a very specific type of person and then milk them of thousands of dollars.

There's a language learning app advertisement that makes fun of Duolingo by having a green woman scream "60 DAY STREAK" and to this day I have no idea what the company being promoted is so that backfired heavily

I think you're just getting old, my friend.

I remember hearing the from adults when I was growing up. Then I remember having this opinion myself as I got older. Point being it's probably more about you than the ads.

Can you show a recent ad where you don't know what's being advertised? Kinda sorta don't believe you. Not to mention the brand itself might pop up and you'll recognize it, thus making the ad work. It's not always about simply selling a specific product from a specific ad.
