Common truisms are not meant to be applied dogmatically in every situation.

Agreed. Never give up on yourself is a good saying, but it doesn't mean "blindly march forward reckless abandon"

True! If you are persistent in pursuing the goal you chose, you will most likely reach it, ultimately. The difference is that, when you look back afterwards, you may find out that the goal was not worthwile. Giving up does not mean that you are too weak or incompetent. It just means that the pursued goal is not worth all the struggles it brings to you.

It really depends. There are a lot of people who fail once and give up. There are other people who will keep throwing themselves at something and not give up. For the one, the never give up quote is something that can be used to encourage them into keep trying, while the second could use the 'you should know when to bail'. Most of these adages aren't meant to be taken literally and applied to every situation. 'Never give up' is meant for when something IS achievable but it takes work, often hard work, to achieve it. 'Know when to bail' would be meant for when achieving something is impossible or practically impossible. Also, the 'never give up' adage isn't meant to be 'keep doing the exact same thing' but rather, 'keep moving forward towards your goal'. You can have setbacks and go the wrong way at times, but keep your ultimate goal in mind and keep moving towards it. If one path deadends, back up and look for another path towards your goal. It also doesn't mean that you can never change your goal. Again, it just means, keep trying. Don't just give up because you have a single set back or because the task seems daunting to you at the moment.
