+90 having one bad night with alcohol does not make you an alcoholic, amirite?

Break up with your gf, lawyer up, hit the gym if you ever had a beer or a social life before

I like to get absolutely smashed like once a week. It's a perfect space for me and my friends to talk politics, life and everything in between. No I don't have alcohol in my house and don't consume it for leisure. And if I have to skip a week or two - I don't crave it.

I mean yeah, it's a social lubricant for me and my mates. We chat, catchup and vent.

I wanna say that's impossible that anyone ever had an opinion like this but maybe I'm just from eastern europe

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Western Europe it certainly is. People drink for 3 weekends in a row? They call them self's an alcoholic, drink a few days In a row? Call them self an alcoholic

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nobody I know in Western Europe would call themselves an alcoholic and they drink most weekends

by ferrymariah 2 days ago

Weekends?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yeah in West/Central Europe it's basically daily

This sounds like it was written by my young alcoholic self.

Americans are considered alcoholics if the have more than 3 drinks in one sitting. It's wild that you can own a gun before 21 but can't drink alcohol legally.

I think the reason people overreact and preempt is because if you wait until it's confirmed, it's too late. Everyone knows someone who didn't know when to say when. Everyone knows making a change in your life isn't immediate. It's their way of taking it seriously early enough that they might be able to make a difference. The best part is, at the end of the day, they care.

Alcoholic is Almost a useless term. The current diagnosis that is used is alcohol use disorder.

The real PSA here is that college-aged kids have opinions that are usually not based on actual life experience, and so can be skewed or warped.

Nobody normal says that

by Anonymous 2 days ago

very correct. I myself wouldn't try it again, especially with all the bad recommendations from people not understanding that I am probably a lightweight because I am allergic to too much liquor. Things like old school wine coolers would've been ok for me, but no, people that like alcohol like it HARD. But addiction is purely psychological, mostly affected by someone's penchant for pain, however it is caused. When I say psychological, I mean it affects the choices you make. Like whether or not you'd choose the alcohol over something clearly obvious. If someone would choose getting blackout drunk party after party even though said person has people that worry about their well-being, well, that says more about how much alcohol has a psychological hold on that person than they would ever think.

i have commonly seen people that are college-aged get called alcoholics for blacking out, puking, or becoming unconscious People that are college aged are still children and children, by definition, are all morons (includes my children as well). They make sense of world by viewing as a false dichotomy, generalizing complexity as simple opposites: racist or not racist, good or evil, alcoholic or not alcoholic, etc. Anyone that has watched the years-long, incredibly sad decline of alcoholic understands that getting sauced and acting like a jackass is a naive interpretation of alcoholism.
