+94 Starting a sentence with "Me and…" as in "Me and my dad run" is super annoying, shows that you can't understand basic concepts and is pure conversational laziness. You deserve to be publicly corrected every time. amirite?

It bugs me more when people say I when it should be me. "They gave John and I ice cream" when it should be "They gave John and me ice cream"

Linguistics > grammar. The rules will change as we optimize language

by Wrong_Inspector_1402 2 days ago

Da point of language is communication. If u understand wat they mean then it's "correct". Ur being Xtra 4 no reason. Here are your red flags 🚩🚩🚩

Ehhh, I don't really see much of a difference between "me and my friend" versus "my friend and I" beyond order. Give it 30 years and they'll teach it in schools, this seems like something ready to change.

linguistic equivalent of not cleaning up after yourself The problem with being messy is that it spreads germs and makes other people clean up after you. Someone saying "me and my friend" doesn't affect anyone

Wow, you must be a very happy person with a very happy life

by That-Act-3930 2 days ago

If it's commonly used and every speaker of a language understands it with zero issue, it's correct. It's not like people waited for the rules of grammar to be established before they began speaking.

I agree with you, but there was one nursery song rhyme from when I was a kid (I think maybe from Barney) that was like "Me and my Teddy! Gettin all ready! Gettin all ready to play!!!!" Granted it's actually not really incorrect (though it would be if they said "me and my Teddy are getting all ready"), but I remember being confused when I did learn the difference in like second or third grade lol A lot of people just didn't pay attention in school.

You need to break up your long body of text with indentation. It's the most basic grammar rule

by brianheaney 1 day ago

The quick trick is to remove the other person and then look at the sentence. For example: "Me and my friend played football". Remove the other person and it becomes "Me played football". Clearly that should be "I played football". The first "should" have been "My friend and I played football". I put "should" in quotes because this is a rule for formal English. Informal language, it's perfectly common to say "Me and my friend played football". Everyone will understand you and you're more likely to hear that version than the alternative. English isn't about right or wrong, it's about being understood and what your purpose is in a context. Being able to show an appropriate level of formality or informality is a higher level of language use than whining about perceived errors in speech.

I interchange the two because I don't always feel like following rules or doing what people expect. It makes me more human.

This is important in writing, but in casual conversation I really can't fathom why this matters so much. How does one even have the time to rage at stuff like this

Adds to the overall lack of polish lol why do you think everyone is trying to maintain "polish" when they're having a casual conversation?

Did you understand what they were trying to tell you? Then they successfully communicated with you, regardless of their compliance with your rigid grammar authoritarianism

So a couple of assholes decided imaginary rules on how we should speak because they wanted to feel more important than the plebs and now the whole world should blindly follow them?
