+96 The average person is not stupid, the world is just too complex now, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The average person is average. A lot of people also screw themselves by ruining their brains.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Most people do very little to improve their brains after college.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Hahaha, you are right, the smart / stupid ratio is probably the same, but as a millennial who went into the same line of work as his boomer father, I was told the technical expertise you are expected to have now in a lot of professions steepens the learning curve.

by Deja94 2 days ago

Yea that precisely ties into my point, the world is getting more complex while our IQ stays the same, so it's tough

by Anonymous 2 days ago

We are apes with clothes, the average person is not that smart. There is a very small minority driving invention and tech while the rest benefit.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Part of intelligence is having the humility to know what you don't know.

by Ritchiedomenic 2 days ago

Perhaps I phrased it poorly, he / she may not be knowledgeable in every area.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

They could likely absorb and process more economic theory in a night of independent reading than the average person could over a university course.

Also misinformation usually comes with a ton of "they vs us"-mentality. So if you confront the people for parroting wrong information it ironically proves their point of view to them. Because people who dont believe the real truth (tm) are either brainwashed/manipulated, naive/stupid or straight up evil

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This is actually my biggest annoyance because it's like we've decided that nuanced opinions are not possible to have. Someone always has to "win" the discussion. I don't agree with the notion that you have to align with someone 100% to get along with them, that's silly to me. We all have lines that can be crossed, but most people take it to the point where it really is just stupid. I try not to waste my time with people like that when possible.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's also pretty difficult to fact check everything

by Anonymous 2 days ago

By definition, half the population is stupider than the median intelligence. Thats not to say the average or median person is stupid. Just half are stupider.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yes, the average person is literally average. People who are smarter than the average person are smart, people who are less smart are less smart. But the average person is by definition the "standard smartness"

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nah, the world's not "too complex," people are just lazy with learning. We literally have all of human knowledge in our pockets, yet folks choose TikTok conspiracies over actual information. Complexity isn't the enemy, willful ignorance is.

by missourirath 2 days ago

Well to be pedantic about it, the TikTok IS the knowledge in our pockets...

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If the average person is adverse to critical thinking and taking the time to actually learn facts, then they are willfully ignorant... and that equates to stupid. The number of people I met over the years who don't know basic history, math or science proves to me (anecdotal and, hence, not scientifically accurate), coupled with a reliance on religious thinking, the majority of humans are dumb as a stump and not even average.

average person American person.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Like why are you guys all bashing on Americans I have no idea. I'm not American but from the sample size I've met I dont think Americans are dumb

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I may stand corrected on that point.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

More like the average person is ignorant, very ignorant with little desire to inform themselves

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The world Is in fact not complex at all. Throughout most peoples lives they've been told what and what not to do. Most of us decided to ignore it and do it the way we wanted to do it, and become shocked when it fails. The moment I decided to actually listen to successful people who were trying to hammer that information in my head, I realized it wasn't hard. It just takes time and plan to navigate through life.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Calling complexity an excuse only goes so far. The average person can learn, reason, and navigate systems if they take the time, but most don't. Complexity exists, yes, but blaming it entirely for misunderstandings ignores laziness, cognitive biases, and the limits of critical thinking many people choose to operate within.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Na mfs be dumb

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sounds like something a stupid person would say. Intelligence is something you work on, not a free gift from fate. You can develop your mind by reading books, solving logic puzzles, and many more. As for knowledge, we have free access to almost all the knowledge in the world on the phones we hold in our hands right now. Ignorance is a choice nowadays.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Everybody is above average at something Hell, you could even argue that the mentally disadvantaged are better than us at feeling unbridled joy and happiness I find this helps me not to judge people, and appreciate them for what they can offer the world

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You are correct that some areas of the world are my complex but I think the reliance on technology has created a culture and generation that you don't have to learn as much because you can just use technology to find answers or do it for you. So in that sense, yes people are getting dumber.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

it's not difficult to understand if you're not a dummy. even if the idea that "the world has gotten more complex" is valid (it isn't), that should lend itself to people advancing along with it. and since they have not, it's a fault on the people, not the world.

by AntAffectionate 1 day ago

I dunno, I screened a bloke for his MRI scan today and he was arguing with me that his hearing aids aren't electronic....

by hosea76 1 day ago

Well lol that is kinda dumb… but I wouldn't generalize from just one example

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No, the average person is actually even dumber than we think

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The average person IS stupid. IQ is based on a score of 100 compared against your age, if it's less than 100, you're stupid. So what a big shock, the average IQ is less than 100, ergo, average people are stupid, but that's not the worst part. Realize that half the population is under the average, and so people actually are very stupid.

by pcruickshank 1 day ago

Your opinion is conceptually flawed in a couple ways. The main issue is that intelligence is always a relative factor. The average person is not stupid. They're average. It's those that fall below that average that start to be stupid. Intelligence is also relative to your ability to function in the world too. There's also a difference between being unintelligent and uninformed. The former being your capacity to learn and the latter being the information you actually possess. There has never been a time in human history when information was so easily and freely accessible. If a large portion of the population has problems understanding the world now, that would point to the average person being less intelligent than previous generations. Of course, it's not that simple given the fact that very powerful people are often trying to mislead the public like never before so some confusion is inevitable.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think this is true and that people just need to call other people stupid to feel better about themselves.

by EnvironmentalTaro 1 day ago

Average is unbelievable stupid

by faheyava 1 day ago

People en masse have always been stupid. Nothings changed… just the benchmark for smart got higher… the lies got more convincing… and we lost anything we had resembling a spine so we are just oh so ready to believe anything we are told… because it's easier than thinking for ourselves and actually seeing reality. Dangerous combo in the Information Age as has been repeatedly shown. Don't expect it to get better anytime soon we haven't even reached the peak yet.
