I don't think this is unpopular nor is it a novel idea. You've just described remote jobs, which exist today.

The big issue is two.. first not all work can be done remotely think firefighters, doctors, electrician... Second those jobs that can be done remotely why would the company pay first world wages when they could hire someone around the world

Lol get me a job that I can do on my computer first

The problem with distance working is that they'll give those jobs to people internationally instead of the people who would be working those jobs in person. Don't believe me? Look at the LaQuinta hotel that outsourced their front desk services. Corporations can't wait until they can hire someone overseas to do our jobs for 1/3rd the cost.

There is an interesting cocktail consisting of the need for incompetent manager to control their employees, and the greed of large companies wanting to outsource to cheaper economies. Fully Remote work needs to ensure that local economies remain somewhat stable so fortunately large companies to not fully outsource everything.

CEOs: If you can live so cheaply, maybe we should pay you less. Maybe we should just offshore your job since it can be done remotely.

Like someone else has said. This is doing the redirect opposite of what you're claiming. FL COL damn near doubled since Covid.
