Movie theaters should have "no food" screenings. amirite?
by Anonymous2 days ago
Regardless of the merits of this (which I think is already kind of dumb), this would be impossible. Movie theaters make their money from concession sales. Banning food and drinks for showings would basically be nothing but a money loss for them and taking up space for more profitable showings with food and drinks being allowed. That or they need to jack up movie ticket prices for those showings and WHO would pay a far more expensive ticket price for this? If movie theaters were already dying, this would accelerate it more.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Yeah but what if we doubled the price of a ticket AND banned food. I'm sure ppl would but rushing in for that screening…..right?
by Anonymous2 days ago
Guess it's only Netflix and other streaming platforms from now on, eh? Terrible idea. No one would be on board lol.
by Schaefercletus2 days ago
You forgot the /s bro
by Specialist_Cry_96662 days ago
Just go for 11 AM Tuesday screening, and you will be alone
by OkGap13692 days ago
But it would increase it by as much as double. Consider most people drop between eight and fifteen dollars on concession per person (Soda or Soda + Popcorn) so those tickets would be like $30 tickets each. Not many people are going to go to a theater, spend thirty bucks, and then sit without even a drink for two plus hours.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Ticket prices can't just be set by a theater on a whim. There are far more moving parts to this than people understand. It's all tied to how we know how much movies make during a theatrical run. Even the trailers and ads before the movie are tied to that specific movie with the prices involved.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Thank you🫣🤣
by Anonymous2 days ago
How much does it already cost for two movie tickets these days to see a usually mediocre mainstream movie?
by Medical_Piano2 days ago
And nobody else would. Theyd lose money on this deal Terrible idea
by Afraid_Yam63232 days ago
Definitely hit the nail on the head for an unpopular opinion. Nobody is going to want to pay $40 a movie ticket just to avoid food noise in the theatre.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Bro where is a single ticket 40$
by tillmanchris2 days ago
In a theater that has to make up for no concession sales.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Did you read where OP was willing to pay for a premium ticket to sit in a room with other people not eating food? That's not a far number off where theaters would have to charge in order to make up for no concession sales. Concessions at theaters nowadays is hella pricey.
by Anonymous2 days ago
They are supposing that the theater would essentially double the price of those no food screenings since concession sales is what floats the theaters to begin with. So if you have a screening without food, the theaters would need to make up the revenue difference.
by Anonymous2 days ago
They're gonna have to raises praises to make up for no food sales
by lebsackamiya2 days ago
It would have to be that expensive to make it financially viable for the theater.
by Anonymous2 days ago
A movie theatre where you don't have to deal with other people is called a TV
by Anonymous2 days ago
😂😂
by Ecstatic_Cheek71512 days ago
No that's called a TV🤗
by Anonymous2 days ago
That's fair 😂 jokes aside I feel like every movie theatre I've been to is more than loud enough to drown out people sounds. Maybe your theatre is just too quiet
by Anonymous2 days ago
It's more like you don't have misophonia. Because to someone who hates the sounds of chewing, the noise of a theater does not completely mask it. It sort of covers it, but you can hear the constant crunches and chewing and slurping. Doesn't matter the theater. I get why it's an unpopular opinion. But the noise is unpleasant and inescapable enough to avoid theaters entirely.
by Efficient_Rice37961 day ago
''It's more like you don't have misophonia.'' Yeah so like most people in the world.
by Schaefercletus1 day ago
Yes. But my point was that the noise isn't completely drowned out, it's just that most people don't notice it because they're focusing on the movie and their brains are able to tune out the chewing without them even realizing. And thats different.
by Efficient_Rice37961 day ago
Maybe my ears are sensitive🫣 it's all love🥰
by Anonymous1 day ago
Hey man, look up Misophonia. Ive got it myself, certain sounds like what you described elicit an extreme emotional response, common triggers being chewing, slurping, smacking lips, audible breathing, etc.
by Anonymous1 day ago
I just want them to enforce their no phone rules.
by bbechtelar1 day ago
Ha. I'm still sneaking in candy
by Anonymous1 day ago
So, in the OP's proposal, they're suggesting you pay more for this no food screening. So you're paying more for a no food screening, only to bring food anyway, which you could have done by paying less for the regular screening.
by charley631 day ago
Yes, you got me. Overpriced spite
by Anonymous1 day ago
Exactly. Even if theaters supposedly banned "food" in specific screenings, how do you prevent people like you and I from sneaking in snacks? Like hell Imma pay for those ridiculous prices.
by Quigleylela1 day ago
Sorry🫣
by Anonymous1 day ago
i hate the sound of people eating too but i never even notice in a theater bc u should be paying attention to the loud movie lmfao this seems like a personal issue
by Anonymous1 day ago
I must have sensitive hearing because I can even hear the person next to me breathing to loud🫣🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Okay yea you're definitely looking for stuff to be annoyed by at that point.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Or it's in your head
by Anonymous1 day ago
Could be
by Anonymous1 day ago
Are we still using that phrase? Is something existing within your brain, your bodies control center, still dismissed like that? Nothing makes someone sound stupider to me than saying something is due to wiring in someone's brain and then dismissing it like it's that person should be able to fix it no problem.
by Efficient_Rice37961 day ago
Maybe it's just in your head. Nothing makes someone sound stupider than playing at an intellectual.
by Anonymous1 day ago
If you don't want to hear munching, then you don't go to a movie theatre. They make most of their money off of their concessions this doesn't make any sense logically or in a business sense.
by Anonymous1 day ago
The movie theater WANTS you to see, hear, and smell other people eating because it might motivate you to buy some food.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Do you have to include emojis whenever you type? Seems excessive since it's literally every reply
by Anonymous1 day ago
😳😱😣 The emojis are louder than the person snacking
by rodgerrolfson1 day ago
I'd already be happy with "no talking" and "no smartphones" screenings.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Yes maybe I could compromise on that🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Food is half the reason I go to the movies
by Norris791 day ago
I will avoid movie theaters where the popcorn sucks.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Not gonna happen, that is where they earn a lot of their money, so no food and that? Not something they want. Also it's really not that bad, when the sound from the movie and all that is on, then it's really not that noticeable. If you don't want to listen to others eat, then the only option is to watch it at home, or wait til there aren't many people in that screening.
by sienna781 day ago
They make most of their money from concessions. Thats why the prices are so damn high. So there's no universe in which this would work.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Not even if they raised the prices for movie tickets?🫣
by Anonymous1 day ago
They're already crazy expensive. I love going to the movies, but there's a ceiling to what even I'd be willing to pay.
by Anonymous1 day ago
I mean if tickets are like $15-20 now, would you pay $40 for a single movie ticket?
by Anonymous1 day ago
People are eating their nachos throughout the movie? I'm done by the end of the previews!
by Anonymous1 day ago
The ticket price goes to the movie studio. The concessions go to the theater. Theaters aren't going to start hosting events for free.
by CharmingTangerine1 day ago
I know this🙄 but it's a nice idea🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Rent out a theatre or watch movies at home.
by Necessary_Budget1 day ago
That would be classed as illegal streaming🫣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Problem is not the theaters, but the people that go there.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Movie theatres aren't going to cater to your weird sensory issues
by Anonymous1 day ago
not really possible for them due to relying on the income from food&drink. and if they did they would have to atleast double the ticket cost to make it profitable.
by Ill_Foot1 day ago
I would pay extra for peace✌🏽
by Anonymous1 day ago
Or you could just watch it at home. Whatever you're trying to see in the movie theatre will at some point be on streaming, dvd, blu ray and/or on tv.
by lednergerardo1 day ago
Great idea. Good luck enforcing that though. Sadly, I rarely go to the theater any more for just the reason you stated. For a period of time, the theater had "premium showings" or something. Fancier seats. Higher prices, etc. That tended to keep out some people from going. Less people, less noise. But, now that's commonplace so it doesn't matter. I just wait to watch it at home. I'm past the point where I care about the "theater experience."
by Anonymous1 day ago
I don't go to movies often, but I am always happy to wait a week or so to get a relatively empty screening where I don't have to be around people who aggravate my sensory issues. It's so worth it.
by bellwintheiser1 day ago
I only go to the theater for the popcorn.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Tickets would cost 3 or 4 times as much. Theaters make their profit off food. Personally, I look forward to them bad food.
by Optimal_Type_65721 day ago
Usually the movie volume is loud enough where you won't hear the munching. The only time I hear the munching is in between scenes or if there is a totally silent part of the film
by Anonymous1 day ago
Bad wording on my behalf😬 I mean the slurping of drinks and rustling of wrappers🫣🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Still doesn't work. I've never in 50 years been disturbed by wrappers rustling in a movie theater.
by Ecstatic_Cheek71511 day ago
I've never heard anyone eating in the movies. Maybe this is regional dependent lol
by Anonymous1 day ago
😂😂😂😂 Yes, it only hapoens in central midwestern eastern regions specifically
by Ecstatic_Cheek71511 day ago
I don't find it that distracting. I'm looking at the screen, not at their phone.
by bellwintheiser1 day ago
I've never once noticed someone eating near me
by Feeneydevin1 day ago
It's more the wrappers not the eating🫣 maybe I should of worded it differently🤣🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
You want theaters to give up a main revenue stream for you and people like you? The main characters are in the films not in the auditoriums.
by GroundbreakingTie6231 day ago
He said that he thinks they should have separate screenings for people with this preference, not that food should be banned entirely.
by According_Click_33891 day ago
Oh I know what he said. Theaters wouldn't make money this way unless they charged extra admission. Theaters make most of their money off of food and beverage sales. Having these screenings would be break even wash for them and nonsensical. Alternatively, a lot of theater goers bring their own food and beverage, and you know rule breakers would enter those auditoriums and create disruption when a 15 year old minimum wage worker has to come and enforce 'the rules'. This is all around a bad take asking a business to pander to preferences. Accessibility for guests is the only thing theaters should be worried about. The theatre I go to has headphones for the hearing impaired and they still have Dolby sound pumping through them, give those a try sometime.
by GroundbreakingTie6231 day ago
You gave the solution yourself: an increased ticket price. And ‘pandering to preferences' is… exactly what a business does… because it wants to sell to people with said preferences. If there were separate screenings like this, some people who might otherwise not go to the movies would go. I used to live in Japan and near total silence was the norm; I'm sure quite a few westerners wouldn't mind paying a small premium for that same experience. You've massively overblown the negatives.
by According_Click_33891 day ago
Theaters have operated the same for nearly a century. Adding more concessions, drinks, dining options and dining auditoriums is just part of entertainment. Thinking that westerners wouldn't mind paying extra in this crazy expensive time, just so they can get away from a small noise every few minutes or so is tone deaf, for yourself and the theaters. Will they be banning coughing, sneezing and throat clearing in these showings also? Will it be less disruptive when someone has to be asked to leave? Like I said. They have good headphones for hearing impaired, people like you.
by GroundbreakingTie6231 day ago
Hmmm maybe. But what would a movie be without the people in auditoriums?😬
by Anonymous1 day ago
They make their money off food so unless you want a grossly overpriced ticket it ain't going to happen
by alberta191 day ago
no, they actually shouldn't
by Anonymous1 day ago
Have you actually been to a movie theater? Once the movie is playing, it's hard to hear any of that. Are you going to silent movies?
by rzieme1 day ago
It sounds like you just don't like the theater experience. I recommend staying home and renting on Apple.
by jaydonbode1 day ago
Are we not allowed to hydrate with water either ?
by Anonymous1 day ago
No, you sit there and die please people are trying to hear the movie thank you
by Ecstatic_Cheek71511 day ago
Very unpopular🫣🤣🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Think it's a very unpopular opinion🫣 I know it's impossible but it would be nice🤣
by Anonymous1 day ago
Went to a showing once in the 'VIP' theatre, one of the benefits being an ice cream lolly being brought to you... after the film starts... and given to everyone at once. So you're 30mins into the film and then you get the noise of a full audience opening wrappers at the same time.
by Maudie511 day ago
My worst nightmare
by Anonymous1 day ago
I watched that Red Letter Media video too!
by Anonymous1 day ago
The only reason I go to the theater is for the popcorn and that extra-strong sprite. Who tf wants to sit through a movie with no food?
by Ecstatic_Cheek71511 day ago
Sensitivity issues alert 🚨
by Confident_Shop99331 day ago
The thing about going out in public is there are also other people there. Maybe just stay home if it bugs you that much
by Anonymous1 day ago
You realize that food sales are basically how movie theaters make their money? Very little of the ticket price goes to them. So interesting idea but very unlikely to ever happen.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Movie theaters make almost no money from ticket sales. They keep the lights on with food and drinks. If you want a showing with no one eating, rent a private theater.
by AirUnhappy1 day ago
There are. At home. On your television. Nobody's forcing you to watch movies the instant they come out. If you don't like being around strangers who snack, stay at home and watch whatever's already released. It's that easy.
by Anonymous1 day ago
How about a theater experience where people aren't on their phones the entire time
by Maleficent-Sky-64541 day ago
If you want to watch a movie without being "disturbed" by the rest of society, watch it at home.
by sonyarice1 day ago
That would be suicide for a theater. The actual movie isn't where the profits are made. It's all in the concessions.
by Anonymous1 day ago
I know. It's an opinion everyone needs to chill
by Anonymous1 day ago
It's already hard enough to find the movie screening at a time you can go
by Competitive_Bug1 day ago
The theatre industry is already dying. This would effectively kill it off considering that's where they make most their money from.
by Anonymous1 day ago
are you willing to pay $50/ticket to make up for the lost concession sales? I just don't see this being commercially viable. Buy a nice sound system and wait for the dvd/streaming release.
by Jenkinsdelta1 day ago
Either you have overly sensitive ears, you're very overdramatic, or the people in your town don't know how to eat. In almost 45 years of my life I've never gone to a movie theater and been distracted from the movie by somebody eating food
by Anonymous1 day ago
Just don't go to the movie theater
by Desperate_Swim1 day ago
I've literally never heard someone else drink or eat in any disturbing way
by thea671 day ago
Guys this is just an opinion🫣 no need for all the hate.
by Anonymous1 day ago
How to kill an already dieing business.
by Joanny361 day ago
It's called your couch
by Anonymous1 day ago
Us experts finish their noisy food before the film starts.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Oh no! Not bags rustling for a whole 3 seconds!
by Anonymous1 day ago
You could just go during less popular times of the day and have a theater almost to yourself
by Anonymous1 day ago
This will never happen. Movie theaters live and die by concessions/food sales. The first X weeks of a film being in theaters (I'm not sure if it's a set number across the board or negotiated deal by deal) a very high percentage of the revenue goes to the filmmakers. It's why so many theaters have started offering expanded food options and alcoholic beverages particularly as theaters become less well attended due to the increased quality of home theater systems and the benefits of home viewing for many (lower costs, the ability to pause as desired, plus the inability of other patrons to impinge upon your experience).
by Anonymous1 day ago
You can have this! Just pick a non-popular time to go to the theater, and make sure it's one of the last few days of it being shown. I go all the time and you'd be amazed how often I have a whole theater to myself or maybe one or two other people. If you want to be sure, you can buy every seat for the showing, but that obviously isn't very feasible because of the cost.
by Anonymous1 day ago
The world will not bend to your whims, just stay home
by Anonymous1 day ago
Yes boss🫡
by Anonymous1 day ago
What movie theaters are you going to where the movie is so quiet you can hear the rustling of a candy wrapper?
by Anonymous1 day ago
This will never happen, but I was at a theater somewhere once that asked everybody to open food packages before the movie started. The loudest, most annoying part is the wrappers. Once that's done, most people are capable of eating quietly enough that once the movie is going, it's not a big deal. As everybody has pointed out, they make their money on the food. And there isn't enough demand for a no-food screening for that to be a viable option.
by Taliamaggio1 day ago
I think Iv hurt some feelings🫢 I'm not dumb enough to think it would work. But it would be nice to not hear a soul🤗🤗
by Anonymous1 day ago
Thats what home theater systems are for. Plus you don't have to stand in line for the toilet.
by Clifton841 day ago
It's called your home. lol.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Then get ready for tickets to be double the price for those screenings then cause concession sales is what floats the theatres
by Anonymous1 day ago
People should just learn how to be civilized when they eat.
by bellwintheiser1 day ago
People that are this sensitive should just watch movies at home.
by Anonymous1 day ago
Or the movie theater should turn the volume up. ASD world should cater to me and my sensory overload.
by zulaufmoriah23 hours ago
OMG the last movie I saw in theaters there was someone just OPEN MOUTH crunching their popcorn the whole time.
by Anonymous23 hours ago
Great Idea actually. Its always good to have options. I, fore one, couldn't care less about the sounds but I'm not representative for everyone.
by lindgrenmayra23 hours ago
To all people saying it's not possible - in my country, if the screening is labeled as popcorn free(mostly it's serious documentaries or very artsy stuff) the staff simply won't let you in with food. Haven't really heard anyone complain about the system and people who want to eat popcorn generally won't go to watch 2h black and white film about a depressed European man smoking in the rain
by Hot-Adeptness22 hours ago
There should at least be popcorn free theaters. I don't care what anyone says, popcorn is the most repulsive "food" upon this entire planet and you might as well be eating poop balls.
by ShineGlittering356922 hours ago
Banning food entirely risks alienating the very audience that makes theaters profitable, snacks are part of the movie-going experience for many. Instead of a strict ban, theaters could offer quiet-friendly screenings or suggest less disruptive snacks, balancing enjoyment with consideration for others.
by caden9822 hours ago
I'm not saying ban them🫢 maybe have one as an option😂
by Anonymous21 hours ago
That's not an unpopular opinion.
by caden9821 hours ago
It absolutely is
by Ecstatic_Cheek715121 hours ago
I'm not sure where you live but in my city there's a few smaller indie theaters, many times I've been the only one for a showing, this is esp true during mid day shows during the week. But also finding those dead mall theaters can give you an empty experience too. Sheesh what I'm describing sounds like a dying industry!
