You want writers writing war stories, who don't want to write about the tragic loss of life? I think you're in the wrong genre.

I think you are right. Something I enjoy is foreshadowing events that lead up to their death. Getting someone to love a character and putting them through hell just to off them for shock factor feels dishonest.
