+66 The Empire State Building is an unremarkable building, amirite?

The Chrysler Building is one of my favorites. The dome cap is stunning in the striking simplicity of it's design. Stands as the hallmark of Art Deco for me.

It's like saying the Colosseum is unremarkable because it's made of stone and is an unimaginative oval.

I mean, Tropicana Field does the same thing as the Colosseum and it fits like, way more people. Who cares about some old stone oval?

Plus it has flush toilets.

And no roof!

Hahaha, also haven't seen people murdering each other for entertainment. Technologically the Colosseum would be possible today, but who would fund a hand built marble stadium with underground chambers to keep exotic animals? 😆 Elon probably isn't even high enough to do that.

Yeah you can't say you understand the history and then immediately discount the history.

does 45 Broad Street really look that different from the building right next to it? it's obviously much taller, but the look of it doesn't seem much different at all.

Have you seen it in person OP?

by Crazy_Durian4375 2 days ago

What I was about to ask. Tallest grandest looking buildings in the country. First time I went to NYC I was kind of awe stricken. It's easier to see an old photo and say "pshshs, not that impressive".

by kovacekluther 2 days ago

Exactly, I didn't get it until I moved to NYC. Everyone's seen pictures in media/textbooks etc. It's a different thing to get up close and personal. Honestly makes me wish I was old enough to have seen the twins in person too.

The Empire State Building is unremarkable... And then your first paragraph is why it is remarkable.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Having been up the Empire State Building it's really not that exciting and is extremely overpriced. The second set of elevators you go up is a little anxiety inducing but I wouldn't say anything is truly breathtaking anymore.

The Chrysler, my wife's building

by Sea_Fish_3306 2 days ago

Yeah, we all know the Singer Building was the true gem of NYC skyline.

by Rennerrhoda 2 days ago

Nah I disagree, it looks great.

Sounds like you have never actually been inside of the Empire State Building. It may not be the most beautiful externally or to the eye but there is something beyond visual beauty which no other building anywhere captures. One has to be inside the building to know what I mean.

I used to walk by there every morning and never felt impressed in any way. That felt a little embarrassing to me, but I'm glad now to know I'm not the only one.

This is the same trope as "Seinfeld isn't funny".

My main gripe with the building is the name. It is just purely descriptive. It is up there with Lot Airlines (translates as Fly Airlines).

by AbleContribution 2 days ago

It is a building in the Empire State ... I recently went to a budget motel in Watertown, it was also an Empire State building. So was the Syracuse airport. So was the gas station in Binghamton.

…I mean…all buildings are unremarkable. They're literally just buildings. We've been making them for some time. Some larger, some smaller, some very artistic, but all simply structures. Even the most impressive building is just a building. If we wanted we could build more.
