+45 Tourism is just neocolonialism with better Instagram photos, amirite?

This would be a more powerful argument if you ignore the fact that not only do the host countries consent to this tourism, they build up an infrastructure to encourage and support it. This is not something happening against these countries' will. Also how exactly do you "extract" an experience? It's not like "experiences" are a limited resource that tourists are stealing from locals… if done properly, it's a win win. Tourists get their experience, and the locals get some money.

Countries literally survive on tourism. And what's wrong with packaging one's culture to provide experience for outsiders? Maybe your beef should be with the host governments in how they take care of their people.

Traveling isn't limited to the "wealthy". Tourism also brings tons of money to otherwise impoverished areas.

My hot take is that these recent anti-tourism wave is because they don't want people to travel anymore. Airplane travel is destroying the eco-system where billionaires set off in private jets. Regular people saving money to travel is "neo-colonialism" when actual acts of neo-colonialism are going on in the world right now. Saying tourism "drives up cost" and "encourages low wage jobs" when tourism is why some jobs EXIST in the first place. This is either the most brain dead take I've seen on here or some carefully planted piece of propaganda. Not gonna work on me.

Colonial dynamics were also cultural exchange and economic growth.
