+56 Kpop is genuine slop. amirite?

by Comfortable-Shirt 2 days ago

To be fair, almost all of the mainstream entertainment industries are toxic and predatory behind the scenes.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Absolutely this. The music and film industry in particular have always been predatory and likely always will be.

by mcdermottrodrig 2 days ago

That's like saying all countries are sexist. Sure in Sweden women still do most of the housework but its not Afghanistan.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

For whatever reason, Korean entertainment is uniquely extremely toxic and predatory.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Surprisingly, the film was made in the US, not Korea.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

To be fair, almost all industries are toxic and predatory behind the scenes.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Its 'pop' the whole point is to be catchy and pretty.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Ice cream is made to be icy, creamy and sweet. So i hate it

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Oh your eating icecream? Enjoy your factory produced dessert slop

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You can say that about most mainstream music

by Swimming_Role_299 2 days ago

Really? What abt billie eilish?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

What about her? What prompted you to bring her up?

by Swimming-Rate 2 days ago

Isn't this essentially all pop?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I was thinking the same thing. It's like the processed cheese of the music world. A collective goo of addictive flavors thats good enough for most everyone to like it but doesn't saciate the more sophisticated pallettes.

by Cultural_Wafer 2 days ago

Michael Jackson's music is classified as pop, would you call it sloppy?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No but hes a sloppy guy. His music is smooth though

by Anonymous 2 days ago

He's a.....smooth criminal

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Criminal, you might say.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I'd argue J-Pop has infinitely more creative expression and meaningful lyrics than american or kpop

by Anonymous 2 days ago

yeah but he just hates kpop cause of the dudes in boy groups cause he's confused why women love them so much instead of the typical jacked, muscular men. source: guy who used to be like that

And their behavior also feeds into the way the agencies treat them. The parasocial behavior of the fans feeds into the way agencies strictly monitor and control the personal lives.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

it's actually not that much of a reach, the most famous Kpop idols are actually discouraged from dating because it can result in a loss of fans and revenue, it's kinda crazy that it happens but it's real

by collinsollie 2 days ago

It's a reach to put this on the fans. Kpop isn't the only genre with parasocial and obsessed fans but it's the only genre that consistently treats its stars like this. That's not on the fans at all

by Anonymous 2 days ago

im sure upper management holds the greatest amount of blame but I think the fans play a part in it too. idk im not a Kpop fan im just a random korean sharing his perspective

by collinsollie 2 days ago

do u watch any shows/movies with actors who are children or teens?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yeah exactly, the entertainment industry is toxic and exploitative as a whole, in literally every country. I'm not a kpop stan, but it's such a double standard. In the US, actors and singers come out all the time with stories about how terribly they were treated, but it's such a difference when it's kpop (or people act like it's different). It's all the same.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Just weird take.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I mean you can say that about the entertainment industry everywhere. Singers/ actors in the US talk about horrible contracts all the time, they talk about how they were mistreated, child actors talk about the abuse etc. So by going to the concerts/ watching hollywood movies, we are also enabling such practices (by your logic).

by Anonymous 2 days ago

When Idols get cancelled for the most stupid reasons, fans are validating those practices, ie: the can't date anyone, have to behave in a particular way, have to seem pure, etc.

by External-Gas 2 days ago

The fanbase is on record for stalking idols. I heard some crazy thing happen.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Bruh.... you don't understand at all how predatory and brutal the kpop industry (and Korea in general) truly is. it's nowhere near as simple as you're making it out to be. Plenty of YouTube videos and documentaries of this.

by Creepy-Confidence836 1 day ago

Wow so brave and unpopular, the average person is a diehard kpop stan đŸ™„

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'm not a K-pop fan but the songs in K-pop demon hunters genuinely, incredibly well executed pop songs.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Isnt the point of a song to be catchy lmao

by Rmayer 1 day ago

no?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not necessarily.

by Livid_Welder 1 day ago

nah kpop isn't kballad, kindie or smtg... kpop's entire formula is about hooks you can't get out of your head. so, it's supposed to be catchy - that's why it's repetitive, and often use corny english phrases!

by Lumpy_Ad_2464 1 day ago

He said "isn't the point of A song" meaning any song ever.

by Livid_Welder 1 day ago

Catchy doesn't mean it's good.

by Swimming-Rate 1 day ago

It's also dance music. Kpop should be catchy, energetic, and repetitive so people can dance to it. Lyrics often function more like an instrument than a storytelling device in pop music for this reason.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

yeah I have a theory is that they've become so big, they can't be touched by the companies so they dont care anymore. But if you look deeply into it - it's their group activity whereas their solo stuff it's full effort

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Maybe I'm weird, but I care a lot more about the music than any of the peripherals. As such, kpop has very little appeal to me.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I mean the song is literally what matters. It's completely justifiable to criticize it since the only redeeming factors, as you said yourself, are choreography and merch. It sounds almost ridiculous as I type it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's literally just music but in another language. There's good and bad songs but I'd hardly call it slop no more than any other pop music. The only thing I agree with is the toxic fanbases but for the most part that's only in online spaces so get better friends if the people you meet irl are like that

by Same-Log-7757 1 day ago

Holy reductive fallacy batman

by Ok-Homework 1 day ago

Go on which bit?

by Same-Log-7757 1 day ago

'Literally just music in another language' No theres for more to kpop that easily differenriates that would give someone reason to dislike it. Your argument is that OP doesnt like kpop because its not in english and thats its only discernible quality you could take issue with.

by Ok-Homework 1 day ago

I mean the fanbases are hella weird, but the music part describes pretty much all of pop music these days.

by Critical_Major 1 day ago

Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift's pop songs are more meaningful than K-pop music. However, I do not see it as K-pop's endogenous problem; Korea does have meaningful pop music, but the language barrier might make only the catchy but empty songs popular in the non-Korean market.

by Few-Lavishness 1 day ago

Isn't Asian things, for Asians, just things?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

hard disagree. if that's the case, why are K-pop companies so eager to establish global/Western-targeted groups with the K-pop system like Katseye and Girlset?

by Worried_Heart 1 day ago

Damn you hit the bullseye

by Stiedemannasa 1 day ago

Hello, I am the person that casually listens to KPOP, there's like 2 songs by Ive I like and that's literally it. Couldn't even tell you the name of any of the members. But then again I don't actually listen to music that much in general.

by roscoelang 1 day ago

The shoddy music and abusive culture resonate perfectly with western audiences A lot of prominent Koreans literally kill themselves due to their media culture yet westerners are obsessed with them providing more of it

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This can be aimed at the old boy bands of the 90's or the "pop stars" of any generation. It's designed for mass appeal. If you don't like it thats cool just ignore it. You don't have to like everything . I for example am not fond of screamo.

by Standard-Injury 1 day ago

Lol "you didn't like this kids movie, I guess you have a black heart and no soul" Weird behavior.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No it isn't lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If they're made to be catchy how are they low effort?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah the K-pop industry is soooooooo predatory not like the western one : Weinstein and p diddy and Schneider and Polanski and that guy that kill himself in prison and co and this list hidden by a certain president are absolutely not predatory…

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'm more of a Rock and Metal fan so all Pop is slop to me.

by Swimming-Rate 1 day ago

K-pop is like if you got 90s slop like the spice girls and cranked up the technology dial

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Woah there. I don't know what's going on in your life but you don't do the Spice Girls like that

by Nitzschekaden 1 day ago

Agree 100%

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Wow such a brave opinion.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I heard about a K-pop singer who had never seen his father since he had become an apprentice. He was only allowed to attend his father's funeral. I am a Taiwanese, and Korea is our neighbour. K-pop is just a small image of Korea: its glory and dark side.

by Few-Lavishness 1 day ago

Nope

by RevolutionaryBill 1 day ago

It's like a glimpse into a parallel universe where hyper manufactured '90s/early 2000s boy/girl bands never died off.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I've been hearing this same criticism about western pop for literally my entire life. Don't know how this is unpopular at all. The actual unpopular take would be to say the opposite.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Is this really an unpopular opinion?

by Alsmith 1 day ago

99% of mainstream music is terrible. Generic garbage.

by Schinnereliseo 1 day ago

Britpop is a very different thing

by Nitzschekaden 1 day ago

What do you expect fans to do about the predatory practices, punish their favs by not supporting them so none of the suffering is worth it?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

But the songs aren't even catchy. The lyrics are embarrassing and the melodies are terrible.

by Objective_Aioli8262 1 day ago

I know of Taylor Swift, but what is MGK??? Martin Gluten King?

by weissnatharley 1 day ago

saw someone describe pop groups as korean destiny's child, and yeah pretty much except HEAVILY manufactured with more EDs

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I've been here since the BigBang/2ne1 days but quit a long time ago. The whole industry is too predatory, and the fans are the worst there is. The most parasocial, perverted bunch of people there is, and it's so normalized. Do you know why every K-pop music video has millions of views? Its because every single fan repeatedly streams them until they break records. They did the same for Demon Hunter. Repeatedly play the video over and over even when they are sleeping. They treat their favorites like gods, consume every video, download every picture, watch every variety show, purchase every single product...it's too much. My coworker is a woman who LOVES eating food. She recently lost a bunch of weight because she's too poor to go out to eat. So she's been eating home cooked vegetarian meals provided by her family to save money. Yet... she just spent 900 bucks on 30 of the same freaking album just to have a chance to go to a fanmeet. She did not win, so she purchased more. And this is very common for the fans.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'm going to ignore everything else because other people have discussed it but I haven't met a single person that casually listens to Kpop. It's either obsession with the groups and a will to move to Korea, or they just don't listen to kpop. That is not an argument. Just because you've never met them doesn't mean they don't exist. This doesn't help your argument at all. You could have focused on the fanbases being toxic without it because it's simply not true. Many people listen to Kpop casually. In fact, if we're playing the anecdotal game, I've only met casual fans and never these obsessed people who want to move to Korea. That doesn't mean I'm claiming the fanatics don't exist though.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

how is this valid? art can't be "appropriated". I don't like k-pop but they don't owe anyone anything

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If you compare them to actual dancers, they are the same level as an average tiktok dancer. Their performances are mostly lip syncing, and when they actually sing they are wildly off-tune. Yes sometimes they do sing live and it's good, but that's a small minority, and compared to good singers, they are lackluster. Not to mention the fact that a lot of them are minors, in an industry that has been proven to be predatory. I don't agree that they are the same as normal "pop", I've seen live performances of pop artists from global stars like Ed Sheeran to local Indonesian/Chinese stars. They are actually insane singers with insane talent.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Agreed wholeheartedly. KPop is even about 4 rungs below "Afrobeats" with how much trite, corny sounding drivel they crank out. It's all replacement music.

by Stiedemannasa 1 day ago

I am 100% convinced people only pretend to like KPOP because their peers are obsessed with actual slop like Taylor Swift, that Bosnian Lady, or piss poor "rappers" like Drake. The music charts have been poor since the Spotify algorithm took over.

by Ready-Statement6448 1 day ago

I had to Google her, Dua Lipa...

by Ready-Statement6448 1 day ago

We're just calling anything slop now huh

by Hanejennifer 1 day ago

They wish they could be American pop singers. Probably even Japanese since they copied them but make worse music nowadays.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Jpop copies K-pop much more than the other way around.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Doesn't matter if the original is J-Pop to begin with and I highly doubt that is true. I rarely see them including rap compared to K-Pop. The two languages also sound completely different and I doubt they write songs with a similar structure but I admit I don't listen to K-Pop at all.
