+57 Riddles are stupid, amirite?

by runolfssonclara 2 days ago

People are definitely that stupid. We have a whole meme based on things nobody ever says, the "the perfect x doesnt exist" template.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I make up specific things that don't exist to answer riddles. I do puzzles when I'm bored, and I sometimes stumble across a riddle. I don't see how it's stupid if it's correct.

Lets assume you genuinly don't see how it's stupid. If you were to answer puzzles the same way as you answer riddles, it would be no fun either. For example it is a math puzzle and you are supposed to say how many of something are left. You can just estimate like 'more than 1' and it will be technically the correct answer. You can 'solve' a lot of puzzle technically correct without even making something up. It is stupid because if you don't want to do them, don't. But don't claim to have done them, while obviously not doing them.

But if I answered 'the Sun' for that riddle, then I would be told that I'm wrong. There's more than one right answer, but the riddler gets to decide which one is more right

"Face" is a very commonly used synonym for surface in a variety of contexts, and all celestial bodies definitely have them. As in "I should blow you off the face of the Earth, or rather I guess the face of the Sun, where you are for some reason, for not thinking of this use of the word face."

Fair enough, former response updated.

Would you use the word face to describe a non solid celestial body? I've heard the term surface of the sun, usually in the context of temperature, but never face. In the same way that I can't say I've ever heard any of the gas giant planets described as faces but I have heard the face of Mars and Venus.

Yup, unpopular opinion

Riddles based one math destroy this whole premise. Lots of riddles, even non mathematical riddles have specific answers as well. Being able to use world play is a problem solving skill just like puzzles. David's father has three son, the first two are mark and John. What is the last son's name? David. That is a riddle with a specific answer. Riddles require a different type of skill but they aren't some random lottery.

I would argue that isn't a riddle but a puzzle, it's too explicit in telling you the answer

by No_Western2512 2 days ago

I would argue that riddles based on math are not riddles but puzzles. I like the riddle you gave though.

by runolfssonclara 2 days ago

So you dislike flawed riddles? Understandable

by Anonymous 2 days ago

There are very few non-flawed riddles, and most of them I would rather classify as puzzles.

Why would the man need to do it telepathically. Couldn't he just write it down?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You're right that's also a correct answer to the riddle

Are you, by any chance, on the spectrum?

by jovani78 2 days ago

There's multiple Spectrums, mate.

by Tessie08 2 days ago

I'm exactly like this and i think i'm on the spectrum.

I take it your not a fan of the book the Hobbit. Riddles in the Dark is the fifth Chapter.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

To be fair, what have i got in my pocket is not a riddle. Gollum should have declared himself the victor and eaten Bilbo at that point.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I mean the riddles before the last one. Last one is not a riddle. There is nine riddles before what I have in my pocket?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nobody writes answers like that for riddles they are always something that exists.
