+50 Black bears are not like big raccoons or dogs, amirite?

I've never heard this comparison.

As if a raccoon wouldn't hunt you if it were bear sized. They have thumbs, they could open all your doors.

Thanks for the nightmare fuel

"Black Bears are dangerous actually" is not an unpopular opinion but alright dude

I get made fun of for carrying bear spray in Utah on trails because "black bears aren't dangerous". I have encountered bears twice in the past three years and now always carry it just in case of bear or men. But this is a popular talking point.

I would say it's not an unpopular internet opinion, but people (tourists) are chasing black bears to catch pictures of them all the time in Colorado. I think it's a better reminder than it is an unpopular opinion.

These are probably the same people who try to pet the bison at Yellowstone.

Charles Darwin has a theory about those folks and whether or not they'll be alive long enough to pass on their genes

I actually encountered this sentiment a lot when I lived in the PNW. Not that they're harmless but basically "Meh you mine your business and they mind theirs." Definitely seen the danger downplayed a lot more than I expected

I have never seen or heard this comparison. Where do you read this?

The black bear lobby is very powerful.

Apparently

Must be a bathroom wall somewhere. I live in Minnesota, plenty of black bears around and have never heard this either....

If is brown, lie down, if it's black, fight back, if it's white, say goodnight.

Yeah if I see any bear I just assume I'm dead either way

Haha. I'm at Capilano in Vancouver and a guide just said that.

They are washing bears

I just know the black bears I've encountered out in the woods bear feet as fast as possible once they realize I'm nearby. It's always been when I'm out hunting that I've run into them, I assume because when I'm not hunting I'm making more noise and they disappear before I ever see them. Meanwhile the one grizzly bear I encountered came right at me when it saw me. That was in the Alaskan backcountry.

Lol I am guilty of this, personally I prefer to compare them to squirrels than to dogs. With that said don't feed em! That's how you get problem bears.

by DifferentFix 1 week ago

Yea. That's dumb.

I have honestly never heard anyone say that a black bear is anything like a raccoon or a dog, or that a black bear isn't dangerous.

Black bears kill less than one person a year. And have never in my state. I'm not going to be the first lol

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Raccoons and dogs aren't exactly harmless lol the former frequently has rabies and will attack, and dogs can be vicious. Black bears usually do run away from humans though. Just don't give them a reason to attack you (don't feed them) and don't get near any with cubs.

Na, they're just big racoons

Since 1784 there have 66 fatal human/bear conflicts by wild black bears. 66! in over 200 years! Your accusation of black bear fatalities is false.

by Niamorissette 1 week ago

Raccoons are dangerous it's a decent comparison. A 400lb raccoon species would probably stack way more bodies than black bears.
