+80 Calling midgets dwarves or "little people" is more offensive than just calling them midget. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Well, for one, a dwarf and a midget are different medical conditions. The other is dwarves were called dwarves before Tolkien dwarves were created. They were named after the medical condition, dwarfism.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Are you seriously trying to dwarfsplain dwarfism to a dwarf?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think they are bigpersonsplaining

by abigaleboyle 2 weeks ago

Need to get these biggas outta here

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

He's not a dwarf though, he's a midget.

by Weekly-Builder 2 weeks ago

Okay, they're midgetsplaining midgetism to a midget, then.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Right 😅

by mcglynnlauryn 2 weeks ago

Tolkien named his dwarves after dwarfs from Germanic and Norse mythology, which is also what Dwarfism the medical condition was named after.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Humans are dwarfs, not dwarves.

by MaybeKind 2 weeks ago

Does it really matter? It barely sounds any different

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Don't worry, boys. This guy is giving us the M-word pass. That makes it cool.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Well the community says differently, and that word is widely considered offensive… so i will just not with it

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Makes me think of little people all voting on what they wanna be called

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You touch on a genuine confusion I have about minorities, how is the consensus decided. Is there some kind of official organisation that declares 'queer' is no longer a slur? What if a queer person still finds that term problematic? Just tough luck get with the program.

by Different_Network 2 weeks ago

I was always puzzled over the choice of ‘little person' but any group should be given the dignity of choosing their own name, so I'll go with whatever you and your folks decide. Good luck with convincing your community!

by Various_Control9941 2 weeks ago

It's literally called Dwarfism lmao

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Not all little people have dwarfism 🤦‍♂️

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

🧐… me thinks they do.., thats what makes them little people.. the dwarfism

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There's probably other conditions that affect a persons size and shape too

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Considering that they are two separate medical conditions that would mean that, no, they do NOT all have dwarfism.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

How about we treat people like individuals and only call them what they individually want to be called

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Umm I'd rather just call you by your name…

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Sure, we all probably do, but we still have times were we need to talk about the actual condition. Like I had a little person friend, and I had to explain to my mom why they might not be able to do X if she hadn't met them, you would have to explain it. I agree with OP, tbh. When I call someone a little person I am usually talking about their mentality, not their stature. I think it feels a little bad to even call a little person a little person, like it's not the right thing to say, but I am not a little person, so I really have no say in the matter.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You don't speak for everyone in your demographic tho

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think that's what makes it an 'opinion'.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Thank you. As not a midget, I feel like I'm not allowed to seek feedback on how outright demeaning that sounds. I decided to defiantly refuse to use any term other than "short people". Maybe you'll be willing to clear up for me if that's the right balance between not offending you while still offending everyone else.

by Pristine_Prize2722 2 weeks ago

People aren't a monolith. OP may like it, others may hate it. Just like OP doesnt like dwarf or little person while others may like it.

by effertzblanche 2 weeks ago

We don't encounter midgets or whatever you want to call them so frequently that we're gonna keep up with the rotating politically correct title. Just accept the different terms exist and are reasonable.

by Logical_Macaron 2 weeks ago

It's like seeing the term "social justice warrior" lol everything is just woke now instead

by Ok-Pumpkin-7433 2 weeks ago

According to them, everything is woke these days. And they'll make it their entire personality to complain about it 😭

by Necessary-Dream 2 weeks ago

Put a continental twist to it. Just use midget but pronounce it as mee-zhay. At the end of the day, if you ever be in communication with people with dwarfism, it does not hurt to ask them what they would like to be addressed as on their condition should the matter arise. We ourselves preemptively deciding for them is patronising af

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

If you want to be called a midget that's fine with me, but you don't speak for everyone and if someone else prefers dwarf I am going to call them that. If meet enough people that I notice a pattern starting to form I will probably call you by whatever is most common until you tell to do otherwise

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Dwarf sounds way more badass Or half man Like London midget doesn't sound cool but the half man of London does

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

To be honest, I would just call you "dude"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I respect your right to be referred to as you like, good person. That said axes are pretty dope and axe throwing is super fun. I highly recommend trying it. Plus then you can just threaten anyone with your axe if they are a dick!

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Word.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

If dwarf is unacceptable, what about halfling or hobbit?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Midge on, my guy!

by IllustriousNoise 2 weeks ago

You can have my axe!

by Kamren13 2 weeks ago

I don't know this sort of response when I've heard others call it "the M word" leads me to think it's just better to treat people like individuals instead of just members of a group who all have the same response to anything

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

All the dumb terms they made us start using are more offensive. Native Americans prefer to be called Indians. African Americans prefer Black. It was all lies

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

My mind always goes to the fisher price dolls when someone says "little people"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This morning a midget fortune teller escaped from our local jail in a clever and baffling series of events making our local police department look silly, or more silly than normal. Last I heard on the scanner is that they issued an all points bulletin for a small medium at large.

by Specialist-Top8330 2 weeks ago

I address them as I address everyone: with the formal, "hey you, with the face!"

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You got it. I feel like the pc go-to is to cater to the majority standard for minorities. So go off dude, set me straight

by Janiyawilderman 2 weeks ago

Yeah I agree. "Little person" sounds incredibly patronising. Midget is way better

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

As an average size person I always that "little people" was a strange choice, but as I understand it, that is the preferred term for most.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I'm 100% with u as a fellow midget

by Beierdomingo 2 weeks ago

I treat and talk to people how THEY want to be treated (unless they are horrible people). If you want to be called that, of course I don't mind, but what if we're around someone else with dwarfism? It's not ok for me or anyone else to use a term that is derogatory to the majority of the people directly involved. M is definitely a derogatory term to most people.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Idk what general consensus is so i typically just say "midget" with tone of clear uncertainty. If I met an individual like this I'd go with what they prefer.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

How do you feel about stumpy mf'er?

by ZestycloseFormal4320 2 weeks ago

I'm not one but I've always felt like little person is an objectively weird thing to call an adult person.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Jeez my man, it's called person first phrasing. You arent a little person, you're a "person of littleness" ... a-am i good ally yet?

by marianebechtela 2 weeks ago

I tend to agree actually. Little person sounds like a toy, or a child. That may just be me, but it's hard to overcome. Definitely agree about the fantasy aspect of it too. Like if there was a condition that gave people green skin and big ears, we wouldn't be calling them goblins or shreks or anything like that.

by ProfessionalPanic 2 weeks ago

Call me woke if you want but I am happy to call people as they prefer to be addressed . I usually ask preferred terms and do my best to follow through. Just

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

do midget and little person not mean the same thing?

by Awkward_Boss_9842 2 weeks ago

I've known 2. One just hated people referring to them as anything other than their name and mentioning their dwarfism angered them, and another dude who had a purple mohawk and enjoyed proclaiming that he was Dwarven. Met him at a FIDLAR show. Was an awesome dude.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I'd rather refer to you by a name than an attribute if you don't mind.

by Professional_Map5137 2 weeks ago

Few people would like to admit that what they say in private, casual conversations doesn't reflect how they address others in public. "Midget" is still far more common than "little person."

by BeautifulRun 2 weeks ago

I'm the same In public and private. It's called integrity.

by Miltonkohler 2 weeks ago

The general population is not, but thank you. (Also, I find the implication that you didn't state which term you use humorous) 😭

by BeautifulRun 2 weeks ago

Why would I? That has nothing to do with what I said

by Miltonkohler 2 weeks ago

Actually no, because I take words at face value. I don't try to add meaning to other people's words. I'm intellectually honest and, again, have integrity. (Btw, you and your offensive circle jerk friends aren't the general public)

by Miltonkohler 2 weeks ago

As a big person I agree. I try to advocate for you guys but virtue signalers don't like to hear it much
