Saying "bless you" when someone is sneezing is really annoying, amirite?
by Abradtke2 days ago
You can just say "Ugh" instead. They will mistake your disdain for your dislike of sneezes, not of their blessings. Win-Win!
by Anonymous2 days ago
Well when you put it like that...

I hope you make it through this very difficult time around someone being polite to you. I know how rough that can be.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Now I'm obligated to respond to you in the middle of my sneezing fit. This is categorically untrue. You say thank you when you're done sneezing.
by Anonymous2 days ago
It doesn't really make a difference. You're pushing an obligation on me when I'm already uncomfortable - and for what? Why?
by Abradtke2 days ago
>You're pushing an obligation on me Drama Queen much? Goodness.
by Anonymous2 days ago
At no point has anyone ever said you must respond while you are sneezing. That's completely idiotic, and you're over dramatizing it for whatever reason. It's considered polite. Whether you like it or not. And PS, I only say bless you, not God bless you. I'm sure everyone is different.
by Anonymous2 days ago
No, I'm actually not missing anything. Except maybe discussing something with someone that possess common sense, and isn't over dramatizing every detail of his rant.

There is no obligation placed on you. You don't have to respond to someone saying "bless you." Most ppl don't even say it bc they e pect a response but bc it's a mindless habit. I've never cared whether ppl thank me or not if I say "bless you." You're way overthinking this

So, I agree with you and in real life I just ignore it. But in the last week I've started asking people about why they say it and some have been very clear that they do expect a thank you or they feel the receiver was rude. It's just a little thing, but I'm sort of a socially anxious person so I pay a lot of attention to this stuff.

It's not religious. Many, many words and phrases we use today have religious roots, but are just normal non-religious phrases people use today. "Bless you" is one of those. The vast majority of people are not actually blessing you like they're the pope or something, lol. Either way, even if it were religious, who cares? Someone is being polite and wishing you well. I'm not Christian, but if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas or says they'll pray for me, I think it's very sweet. They're thinking of me and expressing kindness in the way that they know how even if it's different from the way I would say it. I just accept it because it's nice when people are nice.

Bless you, jerk.

Imagine being this insufferable because people are polite towards you.
by vonruedenayla2 days ago
imagine thinking not wanting to be told "bless you" is insufferable. why is acknowledging my bodily functions considered polite?
by Pagacthad2 days ago
I always respond with, "no thanks" and watch the confusion

I had a barber recently who was unhappy when I said "bless you" after my son sneezed Instead we should be saying "you are bless abundantly" because "if you love the B in Bless, it can sound like you're saying ‘Be Less'. Don't be less" Baffling interaction 😂

Responding to a persons sneeze with a blessing or other standardized response is a very very very old thing. A quick google search would tell you it's an old European superstition about stuffing your soul back into your body, and that is likely where the expectation for the sneezing individual to say "thank you" comes from, but evidence for similar traditions go back to some of the earliest European and near-eastern writings we have including Homers writings.

What if I say geshundite? In my family it's "bless you" "geshundite" "ok that's enough- get it together" (jokingly).
by Lueilwitzdestin2 days ago
Tbh I don't say bless you anyway because- Wait a minute… Didn't I see this opinion a few days ago?
by Anonymous2 days ago
If you're one of those people who must say this then you will have to say it about 1000 times in less than 15 minutes every afternoon. I sneeze a lot. Over and over. God bless you

I say "go to hell" to my friends when they sneeze, but I do say "bless you" in polite company
by Cruickshankwini2 days ago
Look at it from the opposite perspective, someone just loudly sneezed interrupting an otherwise peaceful moment. Saying bless you breaks that awkwardness and in turn saying Thank You acknowledges your bodily function disrupting those around you.
