+108 Adults who buy and collect toys have ruined it for the people it's actually meant for, kids, amirite?

by MysteriousCan 3 days ago

Because without the "collectors" market, LEGO sets wouldn't have blown up in price to multiple hundreds of dollars.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

They got expensive because they realized there were adults willing to pay hundreds of dollars for kits with thousands of bricks. Lego wouldn't be producing a lot of these kits without these collectors. The Mellinium Falcon set wouldn't exist without these collectors because most parents aren't willing to shell out the cost it likely takes to make the set, let alone enough for the Legos company to make a profit. At least, that's the way I see it. Legos have gotten way more expensive than when I was a kid, but the kits have gotten way more complex (e.g. more bricks, more intricate designs).

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I disagree that it was always expensive. I used to get a box every Christmas and I wouldn't have been gifted it if it was expensive.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I mean, there's a lot of price range. You can get small ones for $10 still. But you can also get ones that are $500+. Legos always been on the pricier side. Yeah they're probably a little bit more expensive now than they were… but that's true for a lot of things.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I mean there were small boxes for around £5-10 that would contain a small amount of things, and only like one or two figures, but the bigger sets could easily reach near 100, and the really big and rare sets could be hundreds or even thousands

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I was born in the late 80s, and used to get Lego for many birthdays/Christmases, and it was never "cheap", perhaps relatively cheaper than now, but never particularly cheap.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

People seem to think the past was just "cheap" as if poor people weren't still poor. I didn't have internet until high school and used my monthly $20 of lunch money to buy toys and crap. Still couldn't afford these "cheap" big LEGO sets that I wanted.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Go to your local store that sells Legos right now and tell me there isn't a single set for less than $30. Obviously the bigger, more complex sets are more expensive.

by Objective_Brain 3 days ago

"I used to get some every Christmas" sounds like something you'd say about an item that's kind of expensive lol

by More_Struggle 3 days ago

The spaceship was the most expensive one when I was a kid, and it was $60 and always available at in stores. And it was huge!

by kuvalisgaylord 3 days ago

My mom got me a box of early Technics, and they were about $30-40 in 1989. That's not cheap.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

It wasn't aimed at adults at all until the 2010s, it was very much a children's toy until then

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I can understand if an adult buys 1 for themselves. People have their likes and whatever makes them happy. The assholes that hoard just to flip are scum of the earth.

by Rowegriffin 3 days ago

No they aren't. The politicians and corporations that destroyed the American dream are. Now everything is a side hustle.

by Roxanegrant 3 days ago

Buys product from corporation. Price gouges. Damn politicians and corporations.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Whatever you need to tell yourself.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

You're talking about scalpers. Scalpers are a different breed and are not the same as a normal person collecting toys. Scalpers are the ones that line up and buy the entire rack of Pokemon cards. Fun fact: they dont handle altercations well.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

they really don't. i've told them that they're scalping and they get all defensive

by Personal-Quality550 3 days ago

If kids wanted toys they shouldn't have left the coal mines

by Anonymous 3 days ago

The children yearn for the mines.

by deanna59 3 days ago

What were you able to afford as a kid without a job or bank account? Lmao most of the people buying toys are parents buying it for their children.

by kathrynparker 3 days ago

That's what I meant

by MysteriousCan 3 days ago

I don't think the price hikes are solely due to adults buying kids toys. That's greedy companies and inflation

by Anonymous 3 days ago

You can compare sets from the 2000s to now with similar piece counts and you will see the price has barely gone up but you are getting much less

by MysteriousCan 3 days ago

The issue is not the adults who have a hobby. Them buying one for themselves won't be negatively affecting kids. It's the scalpers who buy dozens of not hundreds to resell at twice the price.

by Evie30 3 days ago

Toys are for everyone.

by Alexyshowe 2 days ago

Tell that to all the kids who grew up broke and could never afford them. Who grew up and is now able to afford them because they have adult money. Thus increasing demand and raising the prices even more and continuing the cycle. Welcome to late stage capitalism.

by Blockdamien 2 days ago

I think blaming the adults who enjoy them is misplaced... Maybe blame the scalpers

by Hackettjohn 2 days ago

They don't buy and collect the kids versions. Lego sell more than one range of lego for more than one market. The stuff the collectors buy is made for them. Collectors aren't out snapping up the Friends, or duplo lego.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Most Lego sets today are made for the collector first and the playability for a kid second

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

Literal false information. They do a few branded 18+ sets, but they still have a ton of kid friendly stuff. Play sets, boxes of bricks, etc. Hell, a ton of the "branded" stuff is catered to kids who watch those shows. First one that comes to mind is Star Wars. Not to mention all the Disney princess stuff that are clearly play sets meant for children.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Didn't know there was an age limit on enjoyment /s

by WideCriticism 2 days ago

Lego has an entire 18+ line. Toys are not just for kids anymore.

by zackarypredovic 2 days ago

When I was a kid, you could give me just about any lego set and I'd be able to play with it. A lot of kids still can. You just lack a child's imagination.

by zackarypredovic 2 days ago

No. Unless your talking about people like the pokemon card scalpers then yes

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Scalpers ≠ former children hobbyists Also who is buying children toys? Lol

by edwardjerde 2 days ago

I respectfully disagree. Toys aren't for kids only. Companies follow what people demand. People are just buying what they want. You also mentioned scalpers. I definitely agree those are assholes but pokemon company is also partially at fault here. All they are doing is selling pieces of paper. They are intentionally making it limited. It's also gambling for kids. I kinda hate it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Legos is for 100 year old too it says on the box man

by RareEntertainment 2 days ago

Most kids couldn't afford it even if it was cheap. I never got an allowance as a kid, and I think many kids are the same. Get what you're saying though, but it's not like kids are doing most the buying.

by Live_Plant2492 2 days ago

I don't think adults shouldn't be allowed to enjoy these things as well, particularly if they grew up with things like Lego, but I'm with you on people who buy just to resell and it already being out of a lot of parents' price ranges. I can never understand how expensive a lot of toys are but Lego in particular always surprises me.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Are they just meant for children? The same adults who are buying them now are the lifelong customers these companies purposely created 30+ years ago during the great cereal wars of 1987.

by Infinite_Face 2 days ago

blame scalpers not collectors

by Personal-Quality550 2 days ago

Lego has never been aimed at adults. They have made lines for adults in the past but with the upsurge of adults buying them up it has clearly changed to center them

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

They have made lines for adults, exactly. Lego has always been for everyone

by Anonymous 2 days ago

But today what was sets mainly for kids are much more adult oriented and are more for shelf sitting then play

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

Well, Lego has always been expensive, so..

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This is akin to saying popular and crowded tourist destinations have ruined it for the people it was meant for, tourists

by MixApprehensive1569 2 days ago

If you're the type to go buy like every pack of Pokémon cards in the store, it's one thing, but I don't think anyone is gonna care if you buy like 2-3 packs at once.

by No-Split-2015 2 days ago

Toys are for everyone. As a kid, my parents certainly didnt indulge me with the real thing. The internet is here, go buy knockoffs if you can't afford the real thing.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Meh, I have kids, they never really played with physical toys anyway.

by Otherwise-King 2 days ago

Who cares adults have 💰 and we'll buy what we want

by Mountain-Increase 2 days ago

I see you enjoy video games. You know that's a kids hobby right?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I enjoy video games?

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

Well you don't necessarily enjoy them but you play Hell let loose. Which is a video game. Which originally was a toy for kids.....that adults have taken over? So the very thing you are mad about?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

But people feed it. If there weren't a bunch of adult fans buying them up the people at Lego wouldn't have pushed this far and prices have barely gone up if you compare sets from like 2000 to now by piece count it's just you get less for the same price or more now

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

I have unfortunately

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

Because of those meddling kids i couldn't get my hello kitty/ninja turtles toys

by Anonymous 2 days ago

God forbid an adult wants toys

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Lego was never a kids toy it was always a toy for all ages. The only strickly kids Lego was Duplo.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Even as a kid I hated adult fans of it because a lot of them I was around were pricks and would just buy and buy

by MysteriousCan 2 days ago

It's not adults who collect that are the problem, it's fake collectors and scalpers that only collect to resell and have many duplicates

by lela37 2 days ago

It's not meant for kids, it's meant for companies to make money. They just found a better way than guilty parents.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Funny thing is, those same kids you're defending will be the first ones hoarding Legos and Pokémon cards once they have disposable income. Collectors aren't ruining toys they're the reason the shelves are still full for when kids grow up.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Even when I was a kid, Legos were always expensive

by Putrid_Fig 2 days ago

Kids can't afford 280$figures so I'm not sure you understand the target audience

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Calm down. I couldn't afford it as a kid either.

by kaelynstroman 2 days ago

Anything sold as collectible inherently isn't, and the practice of it is scarcely more respectable than a gambling addiction.

by Arnulfo63 2 days ago

The people that horde the pokemon cards arent collectors or players; they are scammers and dont reflect the adult fans of these products. If you mean that "adults ruin the lives of kids" I would broadly agree with in every era of human history. Its def worse in a capitalist society where you can literally profit off human suffering.

by Efficient_Age 2 days ago

I think it's fine for adults to buy and collect a few toys but what irks me is people who just buy and buy and buy and never take it out of the box. Even the ones they don't particularly care for just because they want to have the whole set. and im more coming from an environmentalism standpoint

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I'll do what I want with my money.

by Nervous_Move 2 days ago

Agreed. It's so weird too.

by hazel70 2 days ago

Yes, millennials are pathetic. We aren't going to be looked on fondly..we will be viewed as the man-child generation.
