+86 Brutally beating a thief is NOT justified, even if they stole something, amirite?

by Entire-Knee 1 day ago

Seems like a great deterrent to me

by Anonymous 1 day ago

But it's been proven that those kinds of deterrents don't work to reduce crime

by karlie68 1 day ago

What kind of deterrent does work?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ok I'm no expert so grain of salt and all that but I think we should really be looking at the reason someone may want to steal like poverty and that stuff systemic issues that would need to be solved so I guess we need to give these people resources so that they don't turn to crime but I don't know again not an expert

This is a very natural consequence of letting crime run rampant. At some point most people will have been victims of crime and much more likely to want to see brutal justice delivered.

Crime, violent and nonviolent, is at a 50-year low. How is that "letting crime run rampant?"

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sources. He didn't mention a particular place so he can be mentioning a lot of places like my country where not only all crime is higher year after year but also peoples faith in the justice system is at a low.

Hard to sympathize that much morally. If you're a psychopath, sure, tough. Otherwise, if you're willing to brutalize, handicap, or possibly kill someone over stealing a cellphone or some money, you're disgusting and worse than the thief. You have every right to defend yourself and your property, a three minute beating by multiple people isn't defense. Those people are a greater threat to society than any thief.

Ehhh the only thing preventing anyone from doing this to others is the social contract and once that was broken by the theif they no longer get its protection. They now get to enjoy the fruits of their "labor".

Maybe dont steal from people then

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think it's hilarious, don't steal something if you don't want a beating

by Fit-Government 1 day ago

Same. There's a reason why the law doesn't let you go ballistic and kill someone because a someone stole your phone. But people like to think that all crimes are the same when talking about "retribution". I saw someone tell a guy he should've beaten a 13 yo because he was a troublemaker (the little gangsta style) and look at him badly because the teen was going to commit crimes eventually so better give him a lesson now".

Well that's simply not possible.

Some countries just take your hands

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Definitely agree, it doesn't warrant grave bodily harm. Punch in the face maybe? Yeah sure, tackled to the ground violently? Sure. But to beat the crap out of someone doesn't fit the crime. Ever hear of the case where a home owner set up a shotgun to go off if someone entered the home?

i bet you think putting people in jail is unethical too then huh?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Makes you feel a little better though.

I am always concerned about people who deal violence to (or fantasise about violence against) groups where its socially acceptable at the moment to be violent against them. Because I know that if the groups change or, potentially through misunderstanding, they think I'm in one of those groups they will do violence against me.

I'm not sure this is unpopular

He could have chosen not to steal. But he did and suffered for it. Sounds good to me.

That video you're referring to is in Mexico. Police wouldn't do anything, so they had to take matters into their own hands. Thieves don't deserve the same rights as regular people, who work hard to provide for their families.

I wouldn't personally do this but I also don't feel bad for them and wouldn't step in. I'm a big believer that once you break the rules and violate someone's person or property you don't really get to complain about what they do about it.
