+84 Wagyu beef is disgusting, amirite?

by Double_Savings_3675 1 day ago

The only realistic answer

by stefantoy 1 day ago

In Australia it is relatively cheap in some Asian restaurants/food places. I get wagyu skewers for $10 for 5 little skewers. That's like $6USD. It's not something to get "full off" but just to have a little taste it's quite affordable. You can also get Wagyu nigiri for only a few dollars, and for $16~USD you can get a Wagyu beef bowl which comes with rice, seaweed, teriyaki sauce and an egg. It's a really good lunch. I've also had a pricey Wagyu steak as a birthday gift and tbh the cheap stuff is just fine if Wagyu is your jam.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah in Australia Wagyu only typically attracts an extra dollar or two with most takeaway meals and maybe $5-$10 at a restaurant depending of the M rating.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's cross bred waygu not true pure bred waygu tho

by Last_Rip_8424 1 day ago

I've seen some cheap Waygu at Costco. I was wondering why it was that cheap. And if there are multiple kinda of Waygu. Remember short ribs in the $15-$20 range. Great intermuscular fat on them. They were good, but not worlds better than the stuff I normally get.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You not missing anything

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Who's eating steak several times a week?! Like why would you.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The couple of times I have had it, it just melts in your mouth almost. Like it's not "chewy" like the fatty parts of a poorly cooked ribeye lol.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What about the fatty parts of a well cooked ribeye

by Johnsonmarvin 1 day ago

Not comparable. I'm not even sure you need teeth to eat A5 wagyu, and just like with butter there is only so many bites you can take before you feel gross and "stuffed". I can eat a 1lb ribeye easily, but struggle to eat 6oz of A5 wagyu.

by ChildhoodEfficient 1 day ago

I'm a big food person, love food, cook every day, plan vacations around food, and I'm totally on OP's side. It's just not for me, it's like a melt in your mouth feel like a Pat of butter but beefy but it's just not worth it to me. I'd rather spend like 1/4 the cost and get a prime ribeye or something

by Pleasant_Truck2515 1 day ago

I feel like there's a big difference between "not worth it" and "don't like it". I've tried it, and while it was a good experience I don't think I'd splurge for it again any time soon. I liked it, I just don't think it's worth the markup.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Im sort of 50/50. It's not my favorite experience and it also feels like you're paying a lot for a brand name type of thing versus paying way less for a lot more

by Pleasant_Truck2515 1 day ago

Found Jack Sprat!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The fat that's left over after cooking isn't the same as the wagyu fat, intramuscular fat is the good stuff. That fat is flavor and when it all renders down if there's a lot it'll make the steak more tender because of all the small little gaps in the meat

by Nelle23 1 day ago

I would consider this unpopular, but I very much agree. I've made this point to others and they say I'm crazy. It's just fat, and I can only really enjoy it if I'm eating a super small amount of it. I remember believing the hype based on how good cooking channels made it seem, and being incredibly disappointed (especially for the price $$$).

by Justen40 1 day ago

I never had it but I heard you are only supposed to have a small amount

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You hit the nail on the head and missed at the same time. Its meant to be eaten in small portions, because it is literally like butter. Watch any teppanyaki video from Japan and you will see the portion sizes. People eat wagyu at steak portions and complain that its sickening. Do you also eat globs of butter? No, you spread it sparingly on your toast and its delicious.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Agreed! I hate it. It's just too damn fatty in the worst way. And I love fat caps.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's overrated and too expensive

by Verlie75 1 day ago

You have to eat it in small amounts. That's the key. Cut it up into bite-sized morsels and sear it. Salt appropriately. It's one of those things that can overwhelm you if eaten in too large pieces or bites.

by hwillms 1 day ago

Straight out of hunger games. Why can't I just enjoy some steak?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I have yet to try it, but i wondered if it would be too fatty gor my taste. Well, intake that back, inhad one little piece at Morimoto's once, but not enough to really feel like i can make an actual judgement especially since I was a fair bit inebriated at the time.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just give me prime ribeye any day.

by Successful_Roll 1 day ago

Nah. Gimme dat meat jelly. I enjoy that I don't really have to chew.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'm with you.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I actually agree with you. I've had it a bunch of times. I keep trying to like it but it just leaves me feeling gross everytime I eat it. It's fat with a little bit of meat.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

People tend to think because something is expensive it automatically means it's amazing. I think a lot of them pretend because it makes them feel above other people lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is what I believe also. I have tried it a few times over the years because people keep talking it up. Final time was in a restaurant that specialised in it at Tokyo. I just don't like it I'm fully with OP on this

by SceneProud8151 1 day ago

It's like eating the beef version of pork belly. It's good in small quantities.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think you're supposed to eat it very well-done (or how people in the culinary industry would say.....ruined......) instead of medium or raw

by Any-Buy 1 day ago

No it's supposed to be barely cooked or you melt away all the fat which is the entire point of raising cattle with all that marbling. It's just not for people with food texture issues.

by Any-Swimmer7876 1 day ago

Neither of you are correct. Never well-done. You can eat it raw to rare, but I will say texturally, it is off-putting. It's best medium which gives it a little more time for fat to render.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The first one would only possible if you live in Japan because all of the refrigeration would ruin the taste and there are most probably contamination during transport even if it comes in vacuumed packaging

by Any-Buy 1 day ago

There is no basis to this. Wagyu can also be sold and transported frozen in Japan. Same with deep sea catches.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sorry to say but it just taste like basic beef everywhere else

by Any-Buy 1 day ago

I've literally opened, owned and operated 4 Japanese restaurants in NY. Sorry to say, I think you should sit this convo out.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I hate caviar but love a rare steak. Well done is only ruined when it's dry and most well done steaks are too well done and dry asf

by Baylee60 1 day ago

Negative, mate. I don't eat caviar or wagyu, I just like my steak a certain way and you like yours a certain way.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, it's not for everybody, because Wagyu is just RICH. Not talking about money, but flavor profile. I can finish off a good-sized steak with no problem. But give me a Wagyu the same size? I couldn't finish even half of it. It is one of those "great, but too much" kind of things. Only had it one time with family, just a couple of steaks split between all of us. It has been a LONG while since then, so I'd be open to having it again.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I didn't think you meant that the cows were wealthy

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The perfect size for me when it comes to wagyu is like a 6oz filet.

by erna18 1 day ago

Ooh it's so yummy tho, like a beef sushi texture

by Filomena25 1 day ago

How similar is it to bone marrow?

by Nelle23 1 day ago

It's pretty gross. You can only eat a couple pieces.

by Fun_Function538 1 day ago

I finally had it teppanyaki style in Japan and i now see the allure.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Wagyu is only good in small portions & eating maybe a couple times a year. At most every few months. And this is coming from someone who's probably ate more steak in the 10 past years than most people do in a lifetime

by Briana69 1 day ago

Hi, yes, I have a question. Who has enough money for actual Wagyu?

by Ashamed-Cause 1 day ago

I'm single and no kids, and I sure as hell can't afford to fly to Tokyo.

by Ashamed-Cause 1 day ago

wagyu is less like a ‘normal' steak and more like foie gras, less is more.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Everything is marketed as wagyu now, likely through legal loopholes, so maybe it wasn't even real

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The first time I had it was in Japan. It was real. I just don't like it.

by Double_Savings_3675 1 day ago

Woof, now this is an unpopular opinion

by Pleasant-Pipe 1 day ago

Don't eat it as a steak. Get the wagyu that is cut into very thin slices and eat it Korean barbecue style with some sauce. Very good.

by Constant-Life 1 day ago

🎯🎯🎯

by Anonymous 1 day ago

FTR: I think it's supposed to be eat on a pile of rice, as you want the fat to melt into the rice, rather than eat it alone.

by jessika43 1 day ago

God I hate fatty meat. At least on ham you can usually trim it off, but with beef it's just everywhere.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Steak injected with butter is EXACTLY why you eat wagyu. It's so tender and juicy and flavoursome.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I've had good wagyu and bad wagyu. The good was legitimately the best bites of food I've ever had.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I had a delicious wagyu burger in texas but it was almost too rich and kinda upset my stomach a little bit. I hear ya op

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Wagyu tartare has been the only beef tartare I've ever had that I actually liked. Maybe it was the sauce work, but it was amazing.

by Naderlorenza 1 day ago

There are different grades of Wagyu. A5 Kobe Wagyu is disgusting. But A4 wagyu from Australia is the best balance between tenderness and flavour. Try Australian Wagyu next time if you haven't already.

by Nearby_Being_3565 1 day ago

My ex brother in law would always call rendered beef fat "meat butter" and that's stuck with me

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is a skill issue More than likely you had waygu blend What you are describing is not authentic waygu lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

How is it not? Wagyu is extremely fatty

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Because "fatty" isn't what denotes authentic wagyu...and a large amount of what we have in the US is not, it is blended. Authentic Japanese full-blooded wagyu is is limited supply in the US and VERY expensive. The blend we produce here generally wouldn't even pass inspection as wagyu in Japan. It may meet safety and all, but would not be given the "wagyu" label. What we have doesn't compare; so it begs the question, what kind of "wagyu" did they have really? How it's cooked is only part of the equation.

by Familiar_King 1 day ago

I've had it in Japan. I was actually in Japan the first time I tried it. South Korea the second time. Once in Canada. Once in Argentina, where they loooove their beef. Once in the U.S.--Hawaii, to be specific. I just do not like it.

by Double_Savings_3675 1 day ago

I don't think that you understand what skill issue means.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's a bold claim because I would describe it as fatty and I've eaten it in the US and in Japan

by ChildhoodEfficient 1 day ago

I feel this way about most fancy food, especially fish. Folks can keep their caviar, oysters, and lobster. It all grosses me out.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Ironically, they were all peasant foods back in the day.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Caviar was?

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

You know... I bet us wagyu is nasty but real wagyu is not

by PuzzleheadedWave1304 23 hours ago

As I mentioned elsewhere, I have had Wagyu in Japan. That's where I had it the first time. Still not a fan.

by Double_Savings_3675 23 hours ago

Did u had A5 Wagyu? Thats the best, lower grade may not be as nice.

by East-Leader 23 hours ago

You know what's REALLY disgusting? Bison. Barf. Went to some fancy overpriced steakhouse that specialized in it and I was so mad when I tasted it. Disgusting.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

I love wagyu. You just have to get it done medium.

by ConstantPangolin 22 hours ago

I did. I eat beef medium.

by Double_Savings_3675 22 hours ago

It is ultra rich but the way you cook it has a fairly significant impact on the taste. If you get it wrong it's not great. If you nail it then it's spectacular.

by magnolia97 22 hours ago

The first time I had Wagyu was in Japan.

by Double_Savings_3675 21 hours ago

ok? what's your point I've also had terrible sushi in Japan. Geography does not "guarantee" authenticity or quality

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

Sigh. The first time I had it was at Oniku Karyu in Tokyo. It's a Michelin-star restaurant famous for its Wagyu. (I was taken there by colleagues. I never would have chosen that restaurant myself.) Does that meet your standard? lol

by Double_Savings_3675 21 hours ago

Well I guess you have truly broken tastebuds then. I've heard people say it's not worth the hype/cost I've heard people disappointed when they try "costco" wagyu or American wagyu but never heard of anyone outright preferring regular steak to actual wagyu. And even more baffling as someone like myself who can't stand the fat in some cuts of steak but loves wagyu that your issue is the fat. I mean I don't think you're lying or anything but I feel sorry for you missing out on the experience I have when I get to eat it. If I could afford it I'd eat it at every meal

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

How can you loathe fat in steaks but like wagyu. "Good" Wagyu is just basically fat with a few muscle fibres

by SceneProud8151 20 hours ago

I don't really know or care. I know I can eat real wagyu all day any time and I know I dry heave when I get a chunk of fat from a regular steak in my mouth.

by Anonymous 20 hours ago
