The instrumental part of a song is far more important than the lyrics, amirite?
by Anonymous2 days ago
Agreed. Usually artists will use a lot of the same instrumentals between them and it slaps every time. Bad instrumentals with great lyrics though I can't get into. I think this is the popular opinion with younger people though. Isn't that why yeat and carti are always playing?

I don't listen to either of them, but I don't think they have good instrumentals or lyrics lol
by Anonymous2 days ago
Yes, absolutely! I prefer good singing with bad lyrics over bad singing with good lyrics

With people enjoy for the music and not only for the vibes, this is not an unpopular opinion.

Yes, often when I translate the lyrics of English songs, they are pretty bland. It's the instrumentation which makes it worth listening.

Poetry doesn't always translate well tbf

That's why I rarely listen to music in my native language. English is good because despite speaking it, I can always leave some space to "I probably misunderstood an idiom". Germanic languages are perfect for me lol.

What do you have to say about Acapellas then?
by helenaroberts2 days ago
I would say the voice is an instrument in this context. Not the words they are saying, but the notes they are singing.
by Anonymous2 days ago
I think the only unpopular opinion here is that hip-hop is slam poetry and not music.
by Full_Lengthiness2 days ago
I listen to hip hop the exact same way I listen to other genres of music, I do pay attention to the "music" part first. The big difference between hip hop vocals and slam poetry is rhythm, and in my mind rhythm is the most important aspect of all music.
by Full_Lengthiness2 days ago
Honestly you're right. Maybe a better analogy is that rap is like other music, where the voice is an instrument, but in this case that instrument is percussion? I think I may have just misused slam poetry
by Anonymous2 days ago
You say lyrics like everything is rap. Singing can be just as awe inspiring as searing guitar masterpieces.
by Forsaken_Diamond2 days ago
I should clarify I do mean specifically the lyrics, not the singing. In this context the actual notes being sung are counted as an instrument.
by Anonymous2 days ago
A musical piece, is a combination of all the parts. I view the voice as another instrument.
by Anonymous2 days ago
I agree, I should have clarified. I also view the voice as an instrument, I'm specifically talking about the words that are being sung.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Agreed. If I don't enjoy the melody, it doesn't matter how good the writing is.
by Anonymous2 days ago
It depends on the art style. You mentioned rap but, also Johnny Cash style talking music or that otherwise tells a story. If the story is nonsensical or otherwise bad it just wouldn't work. Screamo? I rarely even know the lyrics it's just vibes. lol

One of my favorite songs of all time is the 8th of October by the band highly suspect. The song's lyrics are emotional and make me cry every time as the song deals with love & loss, but the ending instrumentals make me break down every time as the song ends with around a 1:30 of only instrumentals where you can feel and tell how much heart and soul is poured into it.
by Anonymous2 days ago
This is just a fact.
by Anonymous2 days ago
yes. that's why good lyricists are just good lyricists, while great lyricists are able to work with the band to find the right tones and style for each song and each section of the lyrics.

It doesn't matter what I say, as long as I sing with inflection
by Nervous_Guide_48552 days ago
100% agreed Although I'll say that vocal melodies rarely get mentioned in these discussions when they are super important. Most people love songs not because of instruments or lyrics but the way those lyrics are made into music. Or do you consider that part of the instruments.
by Anonymous2 days ago
Vocals are 100% part of the instruments, I'm just talking about the actual words that are being sung
by Anonymous2 days ago
I've read that the chorus is what catches people's attention and what they sing as they're doing things
by Anonymous2 days ago
Depends on the song. Myvex used to write his lyrics lastvand his music was definitely beautiful on its own

Music isn't just vibration, it's communication. Communication depends on the audience and intent. Without lyrics, music is mood. With lyrics, music can be story, protest, identity, and shared experience. To reduce lyrics to "secondary" is like saying the script in a film is less important than the cinematography, it misses how the two work together.
