You know that some people just enjoy playing, right? The experience is the reward, not a video game achievement that, for some reason, you expect to take to the grave. I would suggest that ALL games are a waste of time based on your criteria and you're wasting your time by not creating physical objects. Or you can enjoy a pastime because you enjoy doing it.

im sure it'll stick around for a while after 6 since it already has a massive install base and 6 may not even launch with online. And since the console versions of gta4 online still work to this day, then im sure 5 will last at least another 10 years

This is why I don't play MMOs, or Ultimate Team, or the annual Call Of Duty. They're all built with designed obsolescence in mind.

One thing everyone learns, is no online game lasts forever. Enjoy it while you play it. You will eventually move on or the game shuts down. But if you're having fun then it's never a waste of time.

Think of all the hours you wasted going on vacation just to have it end when you go back home and to your normal life. You enjoyed it when you did it. Like any other experiential consumption.

I put something like 800 hours into Kingdom Hearts for the ps2. I can no longer return to that nearly-maxed save file. All games are like this.

You can still play GTA Online for the moment to moment stuff, goofing around, it's all good. As long as you enjoy your time, and not try to focus on getting as many collectibles and money and progresses. Remember a time when we just screwed around and didn't focus on getting all 50/50 achievements and stuff? I no longer deal with tedious collectathoning, I play other games instead. I have a similar concern about Fallout 76 because people actually pay money for their virtual items and whatnot, and I wonder how they would reimburse people if they shut that one down.
