Pictures of the northern lights are stupid, amirite?
by Anonymous2 days ago
TLDR: You gotta experience it in person

yeah not everyone can get to see them in person

I mean photos more or less never look like the real thing, at least not 100% like it, they capture the light differently than we do so that is just how it is. But why does that mean we shouldn't take photos of it? Space photos also doesn't look like that, so does that mean we shouldn't take those and just experience it ourselves?

Yeah this is stupid. For your own good in the future, go learn how a photo works.

I dunno, I've seen a lot of pictures of the sun that I could never actually "see" myself and they are amazing.

Lots of pictures look like a pretty good representation to me, except you can't see it move and swirl, but it's hardly a pictures fault it isn't a video. I lived in northern Sweden up bu the arctic circle though, so perhaps I have a warped idea of what the "real thing" looks like.

maybe. I live in a region where they will be just barely visible on the horizon, just a small bit of color, and then social media is flooded with photos that look like the arctic circle

Yeah, at the arctic circle they fill the sky and glow and swirl and stuff. If it looks like that in southern areas you're probably right, long exposure shots and it didn't look like that in person.

this is what its like growing up poor, everything is watered down and you never get the hype.

And exactly how is "going to see the Northern Lights, in person" an unpopular opinion? There's probably not that many people who wouldn't want to go and see that in real life. And everyone also would agree with pictures not coming close to the real thing. I fail to find an unpopular opinion here.

I pretty much agree. Northern lights were 'visible' where I live for a while, I went out to go see and - nada. Someone told me I had to take a photo. I wanted to see the lights, not look at a photo of them. Each to their own though, if it makes people happy then cool, but I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed.

You could say the same about space photos but those are still insanely cool
