+42 Fans should be quiet in a concert, amirite?

by Kooky_Opinion7255 2 days ago

I mean it depends on the genre and the audience. There are indeed sit down and STFU concerts. And there are stand up, sing, and dance concerts. It's usually not a mystery which is which.

I learned this awkward lesson. Growing up I had only been to punk/metal shows but in like 2010 I went to go see Sufjan Stevens. We were toward the back of the GA room and figured once the show started we could work our way to the front. Lights went down and the music started and we started trying to get closer, but were met with angry looks from what felt like dozens of homeschooled teens like "why are you touching me?". The crowd was so still all throughout the show, barely anybody dancing or moving with the music. It was completely different from anything I'd been to before. Arguably the worst concert I'd ever been to. Certainly doesn't help that he played an unreleased song that was like 40 minutes long and only played one song off Illinoise during the encore.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I cannot even begin to imagine what the average Sufjan Stevens concertgoer is like lol

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Exactly. I'm talking about not those concerts where it is obvious it's for dancing, jumping, yelling and all that, I'm talking about those ones that are comparatively less in number, where you're supposed to actually listen to the vocals, but some people still feel the the need to yell and scream

by Kooky_Opinion7255 2 days ago

Why are people having fun at this fun thing they are doing?

by Objective_Low4272 2 days ago

I'm in a public space and people are acting in ways I don't approve of!!!

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Bad take, I also have fun in the cinema and expect those around me to be quiet. Even fun places have their etiquette.

by Morarshania 1 day ago

A movie theater is not comparable to most concerts.

by Green_Result 1 day ago

False equivalnce

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Thats such a terrible analogy, you're expected to be quite at a movie theater thats not the expectation at the majority of concerts/festivals ect

by Electrical-Panda 1 day ago

People go to concerts for the experience. The energy, the crowd, the screaming, and the feeling of being part of something shared with thousands of others. If someone just wants to enjoy the music or focus on the artist's skill, they'd be better off listening to a CD or streaming at home. Movies are different. People don't go to theaters to feel like they're part of a huge crowd. Instead, they expect a quiet, focused environment which is why those two activity have different etiquette.

by Ghegmann 1 day ago

I suspect a lot of it is performative; "I'm supposed to be doing such and such, and everybody else is, so I will too."

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Dancing and Singing along to my favorite songs makes me an asshole?

by Green_Result 1 day ago

I think it's just the screaming we're annoyed with.

by Civil-Cheek 1 day ago

I go to metal and hard-core shows man, everybody's screaming

by Green_Result 1 day ago

Me too. I still think it's a different situation they're talking about. Like pop concerts where people literally just scream as loud as possible for some reason.

by Civil-Cheek 1 day ago

It's like you didn't read what I said, just what you wanted me to have said. If you don't know who I'm talking about then you're also an asshole, but for different reasons.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You over generalizing and speaking non-specifically makes me an asshole?

by Green_Result 1 day ago

Me being pretty straight forward and specific and and you not being able to read or extrapolate make you an asshole, yeah.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think you might just be an asshole man

by Green_Result 1 day ago

Nah, not being able to read is just something I don't give passes for.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Anyone who can read can see that you're being entirely non-specific

by Green_Result 1 day ago

Well its a good thing this is what most people do at concerts

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No, it's not, at all

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Its not uncommon

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is common? Tfoh.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No its a strawman

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Go to youtube music, search, "the artists I like - live", have fun.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Facts nothing beats the clarity of a live recording without a thousand people screaming over it

by Healthy_Race_6247 1 day ago

Unpopular is right. You don't know what you're talking about. I have a professional singer rock band for 35 years. If audiences were quiet, I think I'd kill myself. We just finished a concert in England, or the crowd was forced to sit in seats instead of dancing and mosh and what not. This lack of energy at the band into a panic, for fear that the Sound Guy was somehow screwing up or sound. No, fans should not be quiet. If you want a quiet, calm experience, listen at home.

by mitchellsipes 1 day ago

Music is not meant for listening. Music is meant for feeling. If listening to how the artist sings it, the lyrics, all of that, is how you feel it, that's okay. It's also okay to feel without any of that.

by RiceEfficient4858 1 day ago

Silly me I've been using my ears to listen to music.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Pardon? Can you elaborate your point more?

by RiceEfficient4858 1 day ago

Once you go to a concert you will realize you can still hear the music just fine, even when people yell.

by Hahntiana 1 day ago

Depends on the fans. I was at a Billie Eilish concert and the crowd had main character syndrome and were screaming the lyrics over her. I heard 0% of what Finneas was singing, around half of what Billie was singing. I was in 3 floors this year. I was in the same Arena for AURORA a couple of days before that, so it wasn't a venue problem, either. I could hear her, and people were singing. It was vibes, and people were enjoying the music together. That's how concerts should be. The crowd should just sing, dance, vibe, and not scream all the damn time.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

☝️🙂‍↕️

by NoDiscussion 1 day ago

Not when they're screaming/singing right next to you; then, their voices become more prominent, not the band's.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Someone screaming in your ear is too loud. Also at a small quiet bar type venue where people are just there talking the whole show...they just go just to say they go and socialize but don't actually care about listening to the music

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is also true.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Singing respectfully is one thing, screaming in people's ears or even singing too loudly in someones ears is another

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If you don't like yelling then you need to stay home. I paid for my ticket and I'm going to act how I want. I prefer yelling in happiness than the drunks who want to fight.

by Manuel89 1 day ago

Other people also paid for their tickets.

by Objective_Garlic 1 day ago

What's the difference?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

People that go to those types of concerts are not going to listen to music. They are going to hang out with other people. If you want crowds that are there to actually listen to music you need to go to venues like theatres, small/medium size music performance venues...etc. Bars. stadiums, festivals...etc are not for that.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You seem fun

by Molly88 1 day ago

I mean I in no way agree with OP at all, but why do people feel the urge to be as loudly shouting when "having fun"? That's something I just don't get. Have yet to get assessed for some neurodivergent stuff but the signs are there (clearly), that said this is legit something I can't understand. My solution however is I stay away, because this is a me-problem, I have to adjust not everyone else.

by westdameon 1 day ago

I'm not a fan of the concert screaming which is why I've only been to one non-classical concert and will not go ever again, but I will say for some reason I have more fun when I'm screaming while riding rollercoasters than when I'm not so there might be something to it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No. Devin Swank is perfectly audible over a screaming audience.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Depends on what type of show it is. Like if its a Les Miserables concert, than yes the fans should shut up and be quit But if its a band or singer, i think its fine the audience sings along as long as they don't sing so loud that you can't hear the artist/band you paid money to see.

by Lost-Cardiologist428 1 day ago

Can Empathise with this. Not so much on the Folk Screaming next part but folk doing anything else other than Enjoying the Show. Have been to so many shows where Folk just Scream/Talk throughout the Entire thing with their friends, and I mean the ENTIRE thing. They're clearly not watching the band and only get Interested when there's a part they Recognise. Wouldn't mind it so much but all you can hear is them Screaming to their over the Music about Unrelated things. Had so many shows ruined due to those sort of folk

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Fair enough Lmaoo

by Kooky_Opinion7255 1 day ago

What concerts are you even talking about?

by LastPresentation2555 1 day ago

That used to be the case at rock concerts. People listened and cheered when the song was done. They didn't feel the need to sing along, or even worse, stand up and dance. I will never understand why people who have a perfectly good seat have to stand up at a concert. What's the point? It doesn't improve your view. I long for the days when people would sit there and listen, passing a joint down the row...

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just stay home then.

THIS

by Kooky_Opinion7255 1 day ago

I see what you mean. Obviously at most concerts where the expectation is to sing along, I'm going to sing along and probably pretty loudly because it's hard to hear. But I saw a TikTok the other day of this girl viscerally screaming during like a Billie Eilish concert or something and it took away from the entire experience. As long as whatever you're doing doesn't excessively annoy everyone around you, that's all I care about.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You should not go to concerts if you don't want to hear other people.

by Queasy_Spell 1 day ago

I whole heartedly agree. In my experience this is very cultural though. Americans seem to enjoy dancing, singing and screaming to a degree I find completely bonkers and rude.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Go to classical concerts. We're all deathly quiet… other than the aggressive coughing. I actually agree with you but I find the idea of people sitting and listening to Taylor Swift and someone coughing out their lungs every so often hilarious

by Temporary_Walk_9820 1 day ago

There is 'yeah woo woo' when they begin, singing along, a cheer when members are announced ,but then when they are talking, shut the hell up. Also, singing loud/screaming or oddly enough to stand out over the band should not be encouraged.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sometimes I like to get up and dance and sing. I'm sorry you're just not as into the symphony as I am...

by Anonymous 1 day ago

god forbid people enjoy having any fun

by yundtbeulah 1 day ago

I kinda agree. I understand being excited, but at some point screaming can overwhelm any sound of vocals at all, it sucks especially at the concerts where vocals are not mixed that well.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not gonna. Unless it's an opera or play where you're required to be quiet I'm not doing that. I pay for concert I'm gonna scream my face off and have fun especially when the band encourages it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes, actually. Having fun in public and expressing it feels gauche to me unironically

by Temporary_Walk_9820 1 day ago

Seriously I went to a show once the artist was having a vulnerable moment discussing his challenges with addiction and depression and the lady behind me screaming "we love you" like really? I'm sure that wouldn't be the response I'd want from a vulnerable moment

by Then-External2764 1 day ago

I get your point but I paid $100 for this seat and $20 for this beer. You're lucky I'm going to the bathroom to pee
