+75 A poor person's greatest enemy is other poor people. amirite?

by Deloresschamber 1 day ago

So its not the landlords extracting value from the working man? And its not politicians who set taxes that benefit the wealthy? Or Ceo's who will happily lay off hundreds of employees to enhance their bonus? Or companies acting in predatory ways? Or social media giants profiting from spreading actual known lies? I won't deny there are some aspects of society who try to bring others down to their level, but the biggest hardships faced by most people come from on high.

by Financial-Fox6590 1 day ago

No, those rich people want what's best for us, they're more qualified and educated than you and me. They deserve their (inherited with zero effort) wealth! Your real enemy is those poor immigrants and different coloured people, who are stealing from you. They definitely aren't here to improve their lives, no they're here to take your spot! /s

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not the landlords. It's the banks financing the mortgages that are generating the real "value" from the industry. The tenant and their rent are a tiny factor, comparatively- they're not instantly inventing 500k worth of value. People just aim at landlords because they're an easier and more obvious target. Most of the "rich" landlords are much closer to their tenants than the people who keep the majority of the profits from that cycle.

Corporations are people now also*

You're 100% right. But you can try and overcome it or don't. Theres a difference between legitimate barriers to success and just being a victim. If you're a 35 year old and the only job you have is a walmart, you can't blame "the man" for keeping you down. You can debate all day whether or not an entry level job should pay a livable wage, but it doesn't. And it likely never will. So elevate yourself. If people put as much energy into finding a better job or improving their position in life as they do complaining how their incredibly easy job doesn't pay 90k a year, they would be making 90k a year.

by Difficult_Strike_156 1 day ago

Your argument presupposes there are enough 90k jobs for everyone if they try hard enough. There aren't. Fundamentally this is wrong. Yes people should strive hard to do the best they can do. But there aren't enough high paying jobs for everyone, an issue which is only going to get worse with automation and AI. We wouldn't need higher paying jobs if things like housing were more affordable, hence my general stance.

by Financial-Fox6590 1 day ago

Unironically, no to all of those. Yes, those things happen and they suck, but the sooner you start to realize you are in control of your life, not everything on the outside, the sooner you actually get control of your life and it starts to get better.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah the 1000's of businesses that fail every year are because people aren't trying hard enough. You can try the hardest possible, do all the things right and still absolutely fail due to things outside of your control. Where I live something like 60% of all businesses that start fail in the first five years. You think it's because they aren't trying hard enough? Feels like you're just punching down to me.

This isn't an unpopular opinion. It's a wrong answer.

The crabs in a bucket mentality is real but a drop in the ocean compared to the deep rooted structures in place to keep poor people… poor. Obviously bootlickers get all upset when you mention this, but that's just proof that brainwashing works.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

This 10000%

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Not always. There has always been the crab in bucket mentality going on. it isn't going away soon enough.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Which is the greater enemy: the crab or the bucket?

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Nice way to put that

by Marilie36 22 hours ago

✍️🔥🔥🔥

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

Which is the greater enemy: the crab or the bucket? Unfortunately, it's often the crabs who bitch about, but won't try to leave the bucket.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

And if there were no bucket…

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

What makes it wrong? Blindly swinging at the concept of "rich people" does nothing to make a poor person's life better. A lack of marketable skills, lack of education, and overspending is what keeps people poor.

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

The actual enemy of poor people is rich people, and rich people spend a lot of money trying to divert their attention onto even poorer people. You should ask to be paid for that.

by Rachelle98 21 hours ago

crab mentality: The behavior of crabs contained in an open bucket: if a crab starts to climb out, it will be pulled back in by the others, ensuring the group's collective demise.

by Amazing-Barracuda 21 hours ago

a take that makes complete sense when you realize that it comes from social media alone. Poor people actually tend to be much more charitable to each other than middle class folks. Common struggle helps to breed a more collectivist mentality. In my experiences, it's the middle class folks that are WAY more likely to do things like send you a Venmo request for that one $5 beer they bought you.

The real enemies win when they make people think this exact thing. They want us turning on each other, so we don't see the real threat, the people sucking the life from all of us. Vampires! But no it's actually the corporations. The capitalists. The owning class. They want the working class divided

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

There's a difference between being poor and being ghetto. Ghetto people have that crab mentality

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

They really be your biggest haters. I can't tell you how many times I seen broke people discourage people from trying something out that could make them a lot of money for absolutely no reason

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

You're describing a crabs in a bucket mentality, so yes, you are right that this does happen and peer pressure can be an incredibly negative influence.

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

Not the greatest enemy. Just the easiest.

by Top-Designer7880 19 hours ago

This is just objectively wrong, the kind of "poverty mindset" myth created by greasy Grant Cardone types selling lifestyle and business courses.

by Minute-Sprinkles 19 hours ago

You're one step away from the real enemy.

by Anonymous 19 hours ago

Me seeing a man punch my friend: "Buddy, watch out for that guy!" OP: "You're just trying to tear your friend down. You just don't want him to improve himself."

by Considineverna 19 hours ago

I mostly see people advising learning skills or swapping frugal recipes.

by Demetrisheller 18 hours ago

You like the taste of boot huh?

by Resident_Tiger950 18 hours ago

I think you can acknowledge those in power and the systemic forces that keep our class system in place while also encouraging people to try and improve themselves. The game is rigged, but some people still beat it, or at least do well enough to get some level of comfort. Saying that it's hard and encouraging others are not mutually exclusive.

by Technical-Pool-9136 18 hours ago

Congratulations, you allowed wealthy to control your mind.

by Anonymous 18 hours ago

This isn't unpopular, it's just plain wrong.

by annalise67 18 hours ago

Oh they do want to tear your down, the more successful you are, the more they want that. Of course not everyone but small people in general.

by Anonymous 17 hours ago

It's almost as if capitalism is a war of all against all

by Hermann51 17 hours ago

This isn't an opinion, regardless of it's popularity. Just a completely false statement. Or a completely unfounded belief

by Correct_Step 17 hours ago

That's because everyone's brainwashed by the rich! Divide and conquer.

by DifficultTruck5246 17 hours ago

Correct. Misery loved company. I would say it's sad and annoying, but certainly not "the worst enemy" of poor people

by Uptonarch 17 hours ago

Because it's just easier to complain with excuses

by Mrazgranville 17 hours ago

Bootlicker.

by Anonymous 16 hours ago

Jesus dude, I think you licked the entire boot.

by Rathpeyton 16 hours ago

The person who has this opinion also thinks billionaires are "hard workers" lmao

by Anonymous 16 hours ago

Yes, the other powerless people who are struggling to survive themselves are the ones exploiting you dry and rigging the system against you with all that lack of power they wield over you. /s Brought to you by the same people who look at their local tent city of homeless people our society has betrayed and left to die of exposure and declares them an elaborate conspiracy to lower their property values. You ever wonder why for profit media is always telling you that people worse off than you are your enemy? Of course not. Because accepting an invitation to punch down for a schaudenfreude dopamine hit is easier than thinking.

by Anonymous 15 hours ago

I've been looking for an enemy. Thanks for the info

by Anonymous 15 hours ago

Or, maybe -you're gonna have to hear me out here- maybe it's the people who have the power to help you but would rather pay you minimum wage to increase their profits

by Anonymous 15 hours ago

I will say that when I worked with homeless communities, many of them would absolutely let the elites put their fellow homeless in camps, prison or worse. Quite shocking actually.
