Its fine if you could reasonably expect your order to be done by 8pm. If you arrive at 7:55pm and order something that takes 20 minutes to make, you're an asshole.

Agree. Restaurants need to do a better job of stating time for last seating and kitchen close. Otherwise they can't be surprised if customers see their closing time is 8 and think it's fine to show up at 7.50

One place around me offers a limited selection 30 minutes before closing.

Is it technically fine? Sure I suppose. Will I personally do it? No. I won't go to a restaurant even an hour before they close.

Even for takeout you have to realize 7:50 is pushing if they close at 8. General rule is 30 minutes and crunch time is 15 minutes. However if you like playing Russian roulette then by all means do it. They won't do anything to your food but you may just get that pasta they absolutely were about to toss for the night so it's been in the fridge tub and might be chewy. It's still good but it's so not their best. (FYI this is the same food someone might take home so it's 100% safe just not dinner rush fresh)

This is objectively correct
