+58 People only watch Formula 1 in order to fit in. amirite?

by orlolemke 2 days ago

man i just enjoy watching them drive from onboard view...

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I'm not an F1 fan, but I see the appeal from that perspective or an overview. What I cannot grasp is going to see it live. I saw a bit in Melbourne years ago, granted I was outside but I could see in from a section. But watching them zip past, unable to properly see who is who, not able to see thew overtakes and fully grasp the action. I can't see th epoint.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

As someone who is a fan of nascar I'm siding with you on this one. I might enjoy the race, but seeing it in person was just very long, hot, loud, and lackluster. Different strokes for different folks, my dad loves going to races live while I prefer the couch

by Ramiro82 2 days ago

At least with NASCAR you can watch the cars go round the full tank no? F1 or especially Raleigh you're just limited to a section of track.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Fast cars are just fun to watch tbh

by Legitimate_Road6009 2 days ago

Fit in with who??

by Alexandrakohler 2 days ago

By OP's logic, they must be trying to fit in with everyone else who pretends to like Formula 1 πŸ˜€

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nah according to OP pretending to like F1 gets you automatically connections with the ultra rich. Somehow. Now how do you do this?

by Equivalent-Error 2 days ago

This is exactly what I was thinking. I've not met one Formula One enthusiast. It hasn't came up once in 34 years.

by Koeppweldon 2 days ago

cant even enjoy racing now without people calling us pretentious, we just like cars and engineering bro get over it

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Also like what do people gain from that? I don't understand the pretend to like Why would you pretend to like F1 and watch it if you don't like it? I don't like football, I am not gonna pretend to like it to fit in and watch it. Like there's an infinite amount of entertainment basically especially today. Why would I or anyone watch something we don't like?

by Equivalent-Error 2 days ago

At its core it is racing, a past time watched for entertainment since on foot races in Ancient Greece.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I enjoy F1 races because of the strategy and the engineering... I hate that there's so much money and "glamour" surrounding it.

by Kohlergerry 2 days ago

I hate that there's so much money and "glamour" surrounding it. Name a popular sport without money and glamour

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Curling?

by Kohlergerry 2 days ago

I don't know much about curling. I know that it is an olympic sport but is it mainstream?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

My partner and I are definitely not rich. We got into due to DTS and Daniel being an Aussie. My partner will get up after midnight to watch all of qually/sprints and she's into way more than me. I tend to just watch the highlights and the main race. Just let people enjoy things mate.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Again with the argument "i don't like it so everyone who does is just pretending"? It simply seems like you're annoyed by F1 because it's a sport for the rich

by Altenwerthemmit 2 days ago

This. It's like telling people you have to know all Queen's band personnels, songs and the lyrics to attend their concert 😹

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I think you've almost completely misunderstood F1.

by golda79 2 days ago

There are genuine fans that genuinely love the sport, but inorder to appreciate the sport you have to be some sort of scientist or engineer to appreciate the intricacies of engine building, aerodynamics or even, why certain corners/bends are taken one way and not the other to optimize the lap times. Otherwise you're just easily entertained by fast cars and low stakes and don't even grasp the sport in depth.(hence why pretentious people are impressed by the mere spectacle and glamor) Tell me I'm wrong.

by orlolemke 2 days ago

You're wrong.

by Glass_Tension 2 days ago

vroom vroom car go fast faster than any any car i've ever seen go fast That is enough. What does "pretentious" mean to you in this context?

by Alexandrakohler 2 days ago

man sorry i dont have a degree in aerodynamics while building a go kart in my dad's garage and just wanna see car go vroom 🏎️

by Ryangleichner 2 days ago

I don't think any fans of sports involving a ball had to understand the physics behind the magnus effect, the ball trajectory, etc to enjoy the sport. Besides, there must be multiple folds of people who don't give a damn about F1 that that who do. So "to fit in" cannot be more far from the truth.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Knowing this guy has better technique to spin the ball is as peripheral of a knowledge as this car probably has a better engine. Idk man..the entire 3 or 4 people I've met so far who appreciate the sport probably must be genuinely enjoying it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Making a statement about what other people think isn't an opinion. It's just being a presumptuous ass

by sylvesterswania 2 days ago

I am not a F1 fan, but I must say I'm even less of a fan of OP. You sound kind of insufferable

by Ramiro82 2 days ago

But have I lied? dont be emotional.

by orlolemke 2 days ago

who are basically demigods according to them. Who in the world are you talking with lol

by Miraclekutch 2 days ago

Lewis Hamilton has an army of fangirls from all over the world.

by orlolemke 2 days ago

Have you seen the legion of fan christiano ronaldo or messi have? Lol we had literal fist fights in their matches and I live in a different continent. Hamilton is a legend in the history of formula 1.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

And? He has many male fans as well. Probably more than girls. I haven't heard anyone claim he's a demigod.

by Miraclekutch 2 days ago

Ok

by orlolemke 1 day ago

So basically you are upset with Formula 1 because girls think Lewis Hamilton is hot?

by Leading-Reaction-431 1 day ago

Ah yes, only F1 has popular people. I am sure no one knows who Ronaldo or Messi is

by Equivalent-Error 1 day ago

I think thats most of sports tbh.

by kirlinnicolette 1 day ago

I do agree that more and more people just watch F1for the opulence. But a lot of people (me included) really love the engineering of these machines. This is the same reason I watch WEC as well. Man, I love fast cars

by Anonymous 1 day ago

About 60 M people watch the races live, so I don't think you know all the intentions.

by Sure_Bird 1 day ago

Bro f1 fanbase is not that large, there is not much fitting in. It takes incredible amount of skill to make those cars work; and even beyond the leaders of the grid there are so much going on. Hulkenberg got his first podium this year, after having the longest podium run in the history of f1. You are just shallow and think that your experience is universal.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nah not everyone wants to fit in like you do. Some people love stuff to love it.

by Due-World3821 1 day ago

Tell me you don't understand sports entertainment without telling me you don't understand sports entertainment. And yes, F1 is a competition among car brands as much as it is a competition between drivers. That is by design and it's actually an outlier among motor sports. The vast majority of other championships extremely strictly regulate every technical aspect and oftentimes even simply give everyone the exact same car. Btw, you can replace "F1" in your argument with "football" and nothing changes. All sports have the same downsides and caveats you mention.

by Lopsided_Internet454 1 day ago

You're the worst type of pseudo intellectual

by Eve46 1 day ago

This gotta be US thing if anything, never in my life I had someone mention F1 and I'm 39. Ok, maybe I heard someone mention games once or twice. So yeah, fit in with who?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

F1 is a bigger thing in Europe than US

by Leonardcrona 1 day ago

Can't say I see it. I would say its soccer, long nothing and then everything else

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Football is ofc the biggest. That doesn't make my statement incorrect.

by Leonardcrona 1 day ago

I think the show "drive to survive" has significantly changed the fan base.

by Kohlergerry 1 day ago

It definitely has.

by Leonardcrona 1 day ago

It's niche here too. F1 races are impressive to see in-person though. I say this as someone not at all into motorsports but tagged along with a friend and his divorced dad.

by Alexandrakohler 1 day ago

? F1 is a worldwide championship and was born in Europe, Ferrari is almost a religion here in italy for some people

by Altenwerthemmit 1 day ago

I enjoy f1, not to fit in but because i enjoy motorsports in general, if you cant accept that different people follow different sports then there is no point in talking to you If you dont enjoy it, it doesnt mean other people shouldnt

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The whole circus is part of the entertainment.

by Western-Tea 1 day ago

Why wouldn't I know about "feats of engineering"? I am after all an engineer and I participated in my university's racing team designing the vehicle electronic systems. The only F1 race I watch is the one in Austin and most of the spectators I meet just seem like normal folk that like racing.

by quitzonmarty 1 day ago

You are an engineer, and so I get it 100 per cent. It is just that most of the people I know who watch F1 on the telly in a pub do it because it's cool to fit in. I should've exempted engineers and scientists since they are able to appreciate the science behind it.

by orlolemke 1 day ago

Counterpoint: fast cars sound cool and they look cool when they go zoomie zoom

by scarlett09 1 day ago

I rarely watch it but find it entertaining sometimes. Idk if this is an unpopular opinion or just a wrong one. People watch sports for all different reasons

by Keshawnkihn 1 day ago

Someone's got to like it genuinely otherwise people are fitting in with who. I find this kind of opinion odd, you get it with things like "people are pretending to like beer". People watch F1 solo, maybe barely talking about it. I am not a major fan but cars go vroom, it probably has more going for it than many foot races.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

i just enjoy watching it but i will say i am not into cars at all, its a very out there interest for me. none of my friends watch it though so it's definitely not to fit in

by Party-Silver 1 day ago

I like the crashes ngl, sucks ass when they don't crash, crashes are key to the watch being fun, crash is good

by Odd_Section410 1 day ago

"To fit in"? Lol. Maybe people watch it because they actually enjoy racing. Plenty of fans β€” myself included β€” follow F1 alongside other series like WEC, GTWC, WRC, or even local events. Sure, the racing in F1 isn't always the most exciting because of how these cars are designed, but the stakes are massive. The money involved is on another level, and the championship is arguably the most prestigious title in all of motorsport β€” maybe even in sports overall.

by Mean-Scallion 1 day ago

That's so absurd. I just like Motor Sport…

by ebony77 1 day ago

As someone who started watching F1 when I was 10 years old in 2007 because I liked Lewis Hamilton, I think you're missing the number of people that started watching F1 as kids. Either because "oooh red car, cool!!" or "cars go fast!" Ultimately though that's not people who cared at all about the glamour, opulence or wealth. Because what does a kid really care about glamour or wealth? I had no real concept of how wealthy these drivers were as a kid and the money involved. I just saw fast cars and their drivers. These are people who genuinely enjoy watching skilled racing and as time went on grew to appreciate the strategy and technical side of it too.

by mitchellshanie 1 day ago

This is really hilarious to me as somebody who feels like a massive nerd because nobody else I know has any real interest in F1

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I was never interested in racing until I read your insights

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Why are you so grumpy? Are you are Ferrari fan? But for me I don't know anyone personally who watches it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

F1 died before 2010. Now its just a ghost. MotoGP, WSBK, MotoAmerica and BSB are the fun ones now

by Far-Ruin 1 day ago

I feel this way about all sports. Im a dude and when other guys talk about sports I think they just take turns spouting their stats and all shaking their head yes.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nah, I just like watching fast cars go brr. I got exactly one other person in my life that watches f1

by tressie57 1 day ago

There's a couple of circuits I enjoy watching because I feel they either do or at least used to result in interesting racing. Same with the Australian supercars, the Adelaide circuit and Bathurst produced spectacular races over the years. I think you can enjoy something and not be interested enough to dive beyond the surface level so my issue OP isn't that you find the sport boring, or that you're labelling the fans pretentious, it's that you insist only having surface level knowledge about the sport should automatically disqualify anyone from finding it interesting.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I just got into F1 a few months ago mostly because I can't stand the constant advertising that kills the pace of most other sports and I wanted something to talk to my coworkers about that isn't work. But your description of the fans is wildly off base from the (admittedly few) people I know who enjoy it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah this, this is unpopular, but it's also just wrong

by Anonymous 1 day ago

yeah i agree i just don't understand why one would enjoy it, it looks sooooo boring

by West-Expert 1 day ago

people experience life differently than you; more surprise at 10.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

notice how i never said "they shouldn't" but said "i don't understand"??? that's precisely bc i know they experience life differently. so take off ur smartpants

by West-Expert 1 day ago

It is these days, although this season shows some promise. The rules have sanitised the sport somewhat, essential in terms of safety, but there is definitely more overtaking this season. Zandvoort the last race was like wacky racers with the shunting, dive bombs and lots of drama. F1 & Golf (which I normally hate) are also fantastic hangover viewing. Where you can veg out for a few hours.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

.... u haven't disproven my point at all

by West-Expert 1 day ago

It's unpopular opinions, I'm not here to prove/argue. Just to point out that my opinion is different

by Anonymous 1 day ago

fair enough πŸ₯ to each their own 😊
