+41 Staying Up Late Destroys Your Life—No Excuses, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I can't argue with that, but it's hard to want to get more sleep when I feel like most of my time goes to work, and the few hours I have left don't feel like enough time to enjoy my hobbies.

It's called Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

Same boat I'm in

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It was like that at my last job, too.

Add a child to this, and you have no life anymore.

by Schmitthorace 2 days ago

A week has 168 hours. If you sleep 8h/day and work 9-5, that‘s 72 hours of free time per week left. Statistically, we have more free time than ever, but now comes to thing: people are on social media alone for nearly 4 hours a day in some countries, that‘s 28 hours gone too. And ofc you need time to commute, prepare dinner, care for kids and so on. But people underestimate how much free time they have and how they waste it every day.

by Aromatic-Comment 2 days ago

Saying that you have 72 hours of free time is kind of drastic. You are not factoring in any time before work to get ready, then commute there and back. That is not free time. And it's not like you're coming home from work and then getting that long stretch of free time. It's divided into small chunk before you leave and then a slightly larger chunk after you get home.

by Jazzlike_Donut4352 2 days ago

you don't really work or live alone do you?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I tell people this all the time and all they do is get upset that I could assume they have free time

by Pricekaitlyn 2 days ago

And what happens when you have a long commute? Even driving an hour each day (not even factoring in eating/cooking) reduces that by 14 hours

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I have an hour commute each way, each day. I still have time to gym, cook, care for the horses, etc. efficiency is key with some of this stuff.

by Pricekaitlyn 2 days ago

You probably also have a partner that helps you out. I agree that efficiency is lacking in a lot of these scenarios

by Anonymous 2 days ago

My partner doesn't help with much at all. I do the cooking and cleaning 6.9/7 days a week. I think people perceive free time as time to solely go out and socialize or go out to eat or something like that. So when they have 45 minutes of down time at home and they see they they can't go hang with friends, go to a movie, or sit down for a meal they doomscroll for 45 min and say they don't have free time.

by Pricekaitlyn 2 days ago

Depends, of course. Are they single and live alone/with their parents? Then yes, they probably have some free time if they are not busy with a career or study or work. Are they married? They can probably still make time but by then you can assume money would be tight because of the mortgage or rent. So they might not be open to hanging out as much. But would if you pay. They have family? Then you can probably only hang out once every week at best, or probably never because parenting is hard.

it's hardly a going to bed late issue, just a non getting enough sleep issue. if you go to bed late and wake up late you will be fine. over the weekend I tend to go to sleep at like 3 in the morning and wake up around 11am, but on work days, I go to bed earlier cause I have to be up for 7:30, hardly rocket science

by Technical_Map 2 days ago

I spent years doing that but it screws up my sleep schedule enough that I feel like a zombie til Thursday lol.

by Informal-Original806 2 days ago

Staying up late destroyed YOUR life. This isn't really an opinion so much as a lack of personal responsibility.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Ummm...I work 3rd shift

by Farrellivy 2 days ago

But you should sleep through your shifts according to OP the armchair doctor.

ITS DESTROYING YOUR LIFE!!!!!

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I would rather sleep 6 and a half or 7 hours a night rather than not having some free time for myself. Plus, I don't sleep before midnight. I just can't. My sleep quality and consistency has only improved when I started going to sleep truly tired after midnight as opposed to what I did back in college.

Saaaame

by Anonymous 2 days ago

That's right, there's no denying that in the morning you're all zombies.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Are you a supervisor or a team lead or something? If yes, then your personal butthurt isn't going to shape health habits of strangers on the internet.

by RestaurantDense5188 1 day ago

If you get up early, yeah. As long as you get adequate sleep and are awake when the sun is out, you'll be fine

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Define late. My body physically cannot go to sleep before 12:00 am ( yes I exercise, eat right, hydrate and take meds) Is that late? Or are we talking 3-4 in the morning. Some people think 10:30 is late.

by Bubbly-Cobbler-5402 1 day ago

9 is bed time

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Wrong, the unrealistic demands of capitalism destroy our lives, and bad sleep hygiene is merely another consequence of it. Everyone wants to get enough sleep, but not everyone can afford to work AND have hobbies AND be super healthy.

by Bonita22 1 day ago

Right? Like sure, I could go to bed earlier, but I am away from home a minimum of 12 hours because of work. I just want some time to do things I like and not just eat, sleep and work 5 days a week.

by More_Television 1 day ago

A bit hyperbolic maybe.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not up to a stranger online to decide for me what I need. I can decide that for myself.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

More complex than that. Some people stay up late because of things like doomscrolling to which your point applies. Others are naturally night owls and cannot help it. Before the internet I would stay up late despite tv late at night being crap and little to stimulate me. If I could go to sleep early I would have loved to. But some is us are naturally more awake later. There is a reason for this by the way. Humans evolved to have some early to sleep and others late as it helped keep watch at night for dangers.

by runolfssonfeder 1 day ago

Some of us have different circadian rhythms and insomnia it's basic biology I fear

by merlin86 1 day ago

Unless you're a night owl. Not everyone is a lark. We are all built differently.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Getting good sleep is probably the best thing you can do for yourself

by alethaschneider 1 day ago

I usually have at least 7h of sleep and remain up not to play video games or watch shows but to work on projects I want cuz I have no time due to work/family. It is... Hard man.

by Forsaken_Hat9489 1 day ago

I am the happiest staying up late whenever I have a day off I will not go to bed until like 5 am

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Well I can't sleep more than 6 hours so midnight is my bed time. If I went to bed at 9 I'd wake up at 3am

by Busy-Plankton-3002 1 day ago

Has nothing to do with time and just how long you give yourself to sleep. I'll be going to sleep after the shift I'm doing at about 7am but I'll feel fine for tomorrow's shift because I'll get up at 3pm

by FreeInflation3629 1 day ago

I have a robust immune system, and don't require much sleep. I've literally never slept for more than 7.5 hours without being unusually exhausted/sleep-deprived since I was a teenager. To anyone reading this, you have a choice of coping and imagining that I have nonexistent health issues (I don't), seethe with jealously, or just accept that some people get away with less than ideal health habits due to their biology.

by RestaurantDense5188 1 day ago

Not me, I'm 42 and I still stay up to 2 or 3 am, I'm up by 830 to 9 and rarely tired in the morning. All my best alone time and thinking happens in the late night hours. I'm not giving that up.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Not everybody has a job or needs go get up early in the morning. This is simply stupid advice where you try to apply your own life circumstances to everyone else.

by Beginning_Bite6726 1 day ago

Good luck turning your brain off when you should.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Thanks for the advice, person who has everything worked out by the end of the business day.

by ProfessionalHefty784 1 day ago

Yeah but it's more fun

by EmergencyMost 1 day ago

I know it is exactly what I need. Try to convince my neighbors of that.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not a staying up late issue. It's a lack of sleep issue.

by maritzakertzman 1 day ago

Night shifts exist

by Framidarrick 1 day ago

Yes it hurt my health bad in my early 20s. I became a morning person after and everything became so much better. I rarely go to bed past midnight anymore.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I regularly go to sleep at 2 am and wake up for work at 8:30 AM and thats perfect for me. I dont drink coffee in the morning, only water. Just depends person to person

by Alone-Lawyer8596 1 day ago

I went from 4 hours in my 20s to 6 in my 30s, anymore and I wake up tired. I don't really have a caffeine intake though, feels like a whole other thing that messes with your system

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I agree but I still do it every night.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

needing sleep is a mind set

No doubt. Care to share what your sleep routine looks like now?
