+41 People who hold their noses when they dive. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Once you jump have water blasted up your sinuses and end up with a nasty infection, you will know why people plug their nose.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Anyone who has jumped from those 30 ft cliffs knows its best to avoid having sinuses pressure washed by the ocean.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Google "cliff diving". Not one of those professionals does it, but I guess you know best.

by Alarmed_Ask_3569 2 days ago

You mean people shouldn't take extra precautions when they are not a professional in the activity?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Absolutely is. Its also easy to not fall off a bicycle, but I would always recommend a helmet. Its simple risk versus reward. There is no harm in holding your nose.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Hur dur u can't swim gud Yeah and? I don't spend a lot of time in water.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yoooo!!!! Whaddup fellow land dweller!

by Pattiebailey 2 days ago

Well here's a tip. Just exhale through your nose when you enter the water and you'll never get water in your nose again.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Impressive, very nice

by Glendadietrich 1 day ago

So blow air out of your nose when you enter?

by Stantonbridie 1 day ago

You should, holding your nose is just an easy extra precaution.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No extra precaution is necessary, just exhale. It's not hard and it always works

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Holding your nose is not hard and always works as well though.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Correct, especially the old brain eating amoeba issue. Water thrust up the nose during a dive into bad water is a very good way to invite the amoeba in.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Never had water shoot up my nose. ever.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

All it takes is one time.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't plug my nose typically. But it sucks when it happens. Life is about experiences so try it & let us know if you change your opinion.

by Ashamed-Influence 1 day ago

Same. If I dive obviously I'm not holding my nose and it's okay. Also if I go underwater and swim like that I don't hold and it's fine. But if I jump in (feet straight down or more "chair like"), or just going straight down (usually to wet my hair more neat to get out and dry) I do hold my nose. I do it because in this cases it's very frequent that I get water up my nose. Dunno if it's because of more "pressure" joined with the very different "direction" water vs nose. I know how to swim since the same age as you do, self learned. Can stay easily above water, can swim a long time, float, everything. Even did swimming for a bit in high school, but could never turn because of water getting in my nose doing that exact thing (the teacher didn't taught me much also). Dunno if I have some issue on my nose and all but it's just the way it always has been. Better to be an absolute idiot WITHOUT water up my nose than one with it, if it never happened to you it's a hell of a pain, like the water is entering your brain.

by Key-Stuff 1 day ago

Better than reading these dumb takes from every single person who thinks their opinions are important.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I am 33 years old and while I have tried several times to blow water out of my nose when jumping in, I frequently get water blasting into my nose, so I hold it.... why do you care so much about how other people jump into water? lol

by Lura52 1 day ago

Does it not hurt you if water goes up your nose? Its a terrible burning pain that makes me unable to keep swimming and try to get out of the water immediatly. It keeps hurting for hours.

by Kendalldickinso 1 day ago

It shouldn't hurt for that long after. It should hurt for a few seconds and then go away.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Never had it go away fast. Just gradually lessen

by Kendalldickinso 1 day ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not normal.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Cray, it's almost like other people are different from you.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just BLOW OUT OF YOUR NOSE AS YOU JUMP IN. Is this really not common knowledge? 😂

by predovicemily 1 day ago

Yeah I do that. I dont hold my nose. Its just that op said that he doesnt do anything to prevent water from coming in.

by Kendalldickinso 1 day ago

My b bro didn't see that part

by predovicemily 1 day ago

Because it's not an intuitive thing that people are going to experiment with inhaling water until they figure out. Not everyone has access to instruction or knowledge that there is a better way. OP, and it seems you to a lesser extent, for some reason have a superiority complex over unintuitive knowledge that you have and others don't.

by ProfessionalDark 1 day ago

Not sure what your definition of intuitive is if blowing air out of your nose when something is going up your nose is not considered intuitive.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The thing is, how does it get to your nose? It never happened to me, unless I actively try to

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's an instinct you had as well until you leaned how to do it properly. Don't be a twat about it

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Same! Don't people know how to restrict their breathing or slightly blow up so water doesn't come up?

by Open-Passion-7172 1 day ago

You couldn't make an unpopular opinion without being rude?

by Numerous_Peace 1 day ago

Wait, you LIKE getting water up your nose?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You just breathe out a little and it creates air bubble in your nose, suspended in place by your nose hair. If you don't flip on your back it stays there

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Get over yourself, not everyone is concerned with the way they look while doing things for enjoyment

by No_Dragonfruit2566 1 day ago

Why are you so pressed on how others do non-critical tasks that only affect themselves?

by No_Dragonfruit2566 1 day ago

By that logic if I'm pressed so are you. I'm not being hateful I'm making an observation that a lot of people don't know how to properly swim. So in your world if someone expresses any opinion that threatens your own they must be mad aff right?😂 Go outside and get some sunshine sounds like u need it. Maybe go for a swim and plug your nose while you're at it lol

by predovicemily 1 day ago

I never get water up my nose

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Well that's why you don't know why they do it. I assume that you unconsciously blow out of your nose whenever you go under quickly. Most people I know don't do that and have to think about doing it, but it's easier to just hold your nose with a free hand if you're not used to doing it, and it's more reliable for people who have less air in their lungs to counter the water

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I mean, if that's the case then... you would also have to think that a professional swimmer using a nose clip is an idiot.

by InformationHairy1252 1 day ago

No, because they're doing it to maximize their possible oxygen retention. The very few that do it, they do so because they don't want to lose air by exhaling out their nose, so they retain more oxygen and can stay underwater longer. Some random person jumping in a pool holding their nose isn't competing at a level where every bit of oxygen matters to maximize performance. All those pros who wear them know how to jump in a pool without holding their nose.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Unpopular ≠ putting people down. Although that is unpopular, it's not cool. Unpopular would be "if you plug your nose, you shouldn't be allowed to be swimming unsupervised". Or something generic that makes a sweeping generalization about people who plug their nose. Name calling isn't that.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

How can it be better to tell people that they shouldn´t be allowed to swim without a supervisor if they can't breathe through their nose to prevent water from getting in?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Because it's an unrealistic expectation to do so. Which makes it unpopular. You're judging someone for plugging their nose, and calling them an idiot or uncoordinated isn't that. What if they have a disability? What if they're on a learning curve? "Oh but they don't apply". They shouldn't, because if you're calling people with disabilities idiots then you have larger issues to address. If you have to make exceptions for the opinion it's not unpopular. It's just nuanced.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

"Insults are the last refuge of a fool"

by Numerous_Peace 1 day ago

It's up there with: why do some Olympic swimmers wear nose plugs? Not everyone is going to have the same experience or background as you. Sure, you can judge them and make those assumptions. If you are seeking understanding I would say that everyone has a preference and experience they want to have when in the water. Does that make them an idiot in your mind? Maybe reframe your thinking on what makes an idiot. Because the bar here is in weird place and many other things constitute an idiot, like when someone makes rash judgments based on something simple and small that they self admitted don't understand. Although thats probably more ignorance.

by whitescotty 1 day ago

I get brutal headaches when water goes up my nose. I've tried a few ways to keep it out but at this point I just hold my nose or use one of those nose pincher things. It's just not worth it

by Anonymous 1 day ago

A father who taught me how to face life's struggles in order to survive. I may not live in a concrete jungle, but where I live, this is necessary for survival.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No good reason? Judging from the responses here, I'd say it was for a perfectly good reason. It's not like he was risking my life anyway; he was always just a few meters away. I'm sorry your father didn't teach you how to fend for yourself.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yea sure. Defend an abuser. What a piece of crap. I hope you get help and I hope he answers for being so garbage.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

wow. Issues much?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think our dad's watched the same John Wayne movie lol

by HumorAlternative1560 1 day ago

Let's be honest. It's people who don't know how to swim well

by Open-Passion-7172 1 day ago

Or have trauma Or do not have the physical ability to blow out as a reflex Or have an inhalation reflex We are still decent swimmers. But we have this one little issue for some reason, a reason that's different for everyone that does it. But people who don't swim well and people who plug their noses when jumping in are not the same category.

by Shoddy_Athlete1539 1 day ago

If the water is cold and it enters your nose it could trigger the diving response. I'm not sure what the risks of the diving response are when swimming.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If your head is upright, water can't go up your nose unless you suck it in... in other situations, your brain just automatically blows bubbles out of your nose to prevent it... I feel like I never learned this. It's just instinctual like animals automatically doggy paddling. People who hold their nose just haven't gotten over the fear that was probably instilled by someone else

by Reasonable_Extent948 1 day ago

Not everyone has that reflex/instinct. Some people literally have the opposite reflex.

by Shoddy_Athlete1539 1 day ago

That's weird to me. I can only go off of how my instincts work, but my parents were taking me in the apartment swimming pool when I was a baby, and I was there all day every day, every summer of my childhood

by Reasonable_Extent948 1 day ago

Sometimes life is weird. Reality is unrealistic. And sometimes the instinct is what we're born with, though for me it came from trauma.

by Shoddy_Athlete1539 1 day ago

It's weird to think about, but reality is different for everyone. Of course, there are general rules, but your experience is how you think life is, and your level of knowledge is how you judge how smart someone is. Did you get the John Wayne treatment? (Chucked in the water)?

by Reasonable_Extent948 1 day ago

i fell in the bathtub as a young child when i wasn't being watched & water went up my nose. it really messed me up & i didnt go underwater for a long time, plugging my nose or not. i'm an idiot for not wanting water up my nose? i'm uncoordinated because i dont want to feel an unpleasant sensation that traumatized me as a child? okay.

by Marilie06 1 day ago

You may not think about it now. But when you were a kid, I am sure someone told you to blow out of your nose when you enter the water. It then creates air pressure to keep the water out of your nose. You just do it by habit now. Some people do not learn that skill.

by Significant_Type_369 1 day ago

I grew up in FL and have been swimming practically since birth. We also had mandatory swim lessons in kindergarten and they teach you this but it's otherwise instinctual. You just blow air out of your nose when you dive/jump in. You only get water up your nose one time and then you learn to blow air. Same thing as in the ocean too. Any time I've gotten water up my nose it's been from inhaling while water is getting splashed on me, not from diving or jumping in. I'm just not sure how people can do underwater backflips without blowing bubbles as when you turn upside down water will enter if you don't keep air flow going but they manage to do it. I can also hold my breath for about 2 minutes so I don't need as much air, maybe that helps.

by stuart91 1 day ago

In that case I don't hold my nose, but I also either jump over the wave or dive into it

by Key-Stuff 1 day ago

Yessss Op!!! It's so weird to watch people hold their nose. Don't people know how not to?

by Open-Passion-7172 1 day ago

No, some don't

by Anonymous 1 day ago

As a lifeguard, I relegate these people to the shallow end. Yeah grown ass adults get pissed. If you are holding your hose you are an amateur and should not swim.

by Hirthedeondre 1 day ago

Then learn to swim?

by Otherwise_Soft9676 1 day ago

I can swim just fine. I also don't hold my nose like that but my son does and he can also swim. Not sure what one has to do with the other?

by RaceMost 1 day ago

You don't sound like a good lifeguard

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No, if you are holding your nose, you: A) Have an inhalation reflex B) Have trauma that caused the habit Or C) Have a physical inability to blow out through your nose when you jump in If you are unwilling to understand these things, you should not be a lifeguard.

by Shoddy_Athlete1539 1 day ago

Man, most people would drown if left unattended huh?
