+77 Living in a small town is better than living in a big city, amirite?

Fine but are there a lot of jobs there?

by forrestheidenre 2 days ago

Exactly. People don't live in big cities because they enjoy traffic and pollution. They live there to work.

I live in a proper town, as in not large enough to be a city. If I need a small city I can drive ten minutes. If I need a big city it's just two hours. It's the perfect setup for me and my lifestyle.

If only I wanted to know most people, or deal with their small town drama, but I don't. Pros and cons.

I'm hardly capable of caring about other people outside of my family, how am I going to find a sense of community in a small town?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Everyone knows everyone. My husband lost his wallet, and it was returned. There is definitely a sense of community. And I'm talking about a town with a 5k population. Its like Cheers. Everyone knows your name.

I agree there is just that tiny factor about finding employment and earning a living...

I don't know my neighbours name and I hope I never do.

I couldn't handle living in a small town. I want asian food and friends with borderline insane senses of personal style.

Crime is far, far lower as well. Murder rate here where I am is 0 because that's how many murders we have each year. It's actually safe.

I'm in a medium size city and one could hear a pin drop most of the time. I know neighbors on all four sides. Air couldn't be fresher .

What are you considering a small town? Because a real small town is about 500 or less people and I grew up there. If you want anything other than overpriced gas station snacks/drinks you have to drive at least 30 minutes to someplace that has anything. It sucks a lot

As a NYer who moved to a small town, I agree with this 1000%.

Hella no. Not even close.

Small towns, for me, would mean never working in the field I studied. And that seems like it would be somewhere between unfulfilling, and soul-crushing. At least here in Aus. Small towns here tend to be well beyond commuting distance for anything even remotely related to my field.

I live in a small city of about 50,000. Lots of restaurants and amenities for its size. The cost of living is far more reasonable, it's safe, barely any traffic. I feel like a lot more young people thrive in small cities or large towns around this size. I have friends who live in large cities and despite their higher pay, seem to be doing far worse financially. So I don't see the trade off unless you're doubling or tripling your potential salary.

Small towns seem hit or miss. You can be singled out really fast and thats bad. I like big city. I like the hustle and bustle. But enjoy a place to go that's out of the city that's quiet. The small town seems too lonely. Like your days and nights are just alone in a house with nothing around you

It heavily depends on where you live because, at least in my country, living in a small town doesn't exactly give you a "sense of community" or "real connections", but rather it gives you a 24/7 feel of surveilance. Anything you do, the others will find out and everyone is ready to judge you. In many cases, if you go from a big city to a smaller town, the residents may reject you and/or treat you like a foreigner. Plus, people from smaller towns also tend to be a bit more conservative than the people in the big cities, so good luck if you're LGBTQ+ for example. So I disagree. It's not better or worse. It depends on how you want to live your life and what you're willing to sacrifice to live it that way.

My experience was quite different. While I live in a major metropolitan area, my dad lives in a small town ever since he retired. The way this town came together for me is mind blowing. As a cancer patient who almost lost everything with nobody willing to lift a finger to help me, practically everyone in this town chipped in and raised me close to $10k last weekend.
