I think the difference between then and now is that people used to be offensive for the sake of shock-value and playing the game was still seen as low stakes fun. Nowadays, people can be offensive but it's usually from a competitive frustration and people take online games WAY too seriously. Obviously influenced by streamers and social media. People literally distill a gaming experience into edging out other people and any inconvenience in their session is world ending.

Welcome to the internet, here come many toxic man, maybe woman and a child in their free time playing online game where punishment is "pls be nice!" As a ban. If you can be toxic towards everyone online, doesn't mean everyone won't be that toxic person.
