-25 "Short Kings" is an annoying term. amirite?

by wisokyivory 2 days ago

I think the "kings" part is the most patronizing part of that term.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Came to say this. Shorty, you ain't no king.

by Elva32 2 days ago

Farquad at best

by Gold_Oil_177 2 days ago

Eh, anything followed by King sucks. They only call you king when they think you think they don't think you're a king.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yes, this exactly. Even when said with the best of intentions it's still extremely patronizing.

by Ordinary-Ad 2 days ago

If you want proper alliteration you don't want a j word anyway as the j in jarl is pronounced as a y not a j.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

We shorties have no king. We have a prince and his name is Vegeta.

by Negative_Daikon 2 days ago

Weird way to spell Krillin

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No shade to krill dawg whatsoever, he OG. Just saying Geetz is the strongest guy his height in his universe (except for Freeza), his wife is the richest and smartest woman on earth that uses a wish granting dragon to retain her youth (a perk that Geetz has out of the box as a saiyan). I bet there are a lot of shorties that would rather jump at that compared to being a cop

by Negative_Daikon 2 days ago

You encountered a narcissist. They're getting more common.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Oh that was one guy, it is quite common that tall people do this. It is even funnier when the girl that's inches shorter than me tells me I'm short like it's a bad thing. Some woman was screaming at me and said something like, "a short guy like you will never get with me or a woman like me!" My response was something like, "so there are greater benefits for being short." I've just noticed in the past couple of years height has become a big thing all around. I think it's a younger generation thing, because I'm getting old and I heard it when I was young, but nothing like I hear now.

by Illustrious_Fan 2 days ago

Fellow short guy here. You need to realize that you are letting short be used as an insult against you, you are giving power to that word as an insult. I just take it as an objective statement of fact. I'm objectively short and it's cool if you wanna call me King. It would be nice if people-first language was used though. Call me King Shorty.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

thank u twin ❤️

by wisokyivory 2 days ago

The people calling you that are giving you the grace of assuming that you aren't so insecure you fly into a rage at the mere mention of being short

by Aggressive_March 2 days ago

Is a compliment that requires ‘grace' to accept really a compliment? ‘Short king' draws attention to an unchangeable physical characteristic that is often considered undesirable. Even if the intent is to praise that characteristic, the person receiving the ‘compliment' may not appreciate it being used to define them.

by koeppeverette 2 days ago

It's othering - as is the implication OP might fly into a rage. Not having a thick skin when it comes to objectification of physical traits doesn't make a person insecure. We're all just brains piloting a meat suit.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Swear people just use "othering" to mean "something bad" whenever they want to make a point but can't articulate it It isn't "othering"

by New-Tomorrow-3943 2 days ago

The intention behind it matters - this can be difficult to discern.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

That's online though, where the social and material consequences are negligible. As someone from before the internet the transcription of that social equation into IRL is causing massive problems IMO. Narcissism = fragility

by Anonymous 2 days ago

There do not exist any phrases or terms that can't be used sarcastically as an insult

by Aggressive_March 2 days ago

What?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Which part didn't you understand?

by Aggressive_March 2 days ago

The sentence you wrote.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Would you like to me to write it again?? Help me help you

by Aggressive_March 2 days ago

I'm pretty sure that is the literal definition of insecurity.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Replace height with race. Does that change your opinion? Would calling out racism be insecurity?

by BarnacleDry 2 days ago

Security is more of an internal equation independent of external factors. Goading someone about their height then calling them insecure is like spitting at them then accusing them of being insecure about being spat at.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You could say that about literally any insult, it's not a valid justification

by Anonymous 2 days ago

But its not an insult

by ExternalScallion 2 days ago

Im sorry i didnt know OP had the level of authority to decide what is and isnt an insult by default

by ExternalScallion 2 days ago

No one is saying he has the authority to decide that So op doesn't have a point then? Like, 99% of people dont use short king as an insult. Thats just a fact that op is choosing to ignore.

by ExternalScallion 2 days ago

How does that make sense? If they were giving him that grace wouldn't they just call him short?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Being annoyed isn't raging

by Neat_Addendum5743 1 day ago

something people still dont understand is that the vast majority of short people are insecure about their height

by wisokyivory 1 day ago

That's not true at all. You're projecting

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah but the whole short kings thing is a way of saying "Look you know you're short, we know you're short, and we know that short people have it tough sometimes, this moniker is intended to show that we recognise that height isn't everything and you still have value" It's like how overweight women will call themselves and each other fat bitches. Sure probably at some level they still have insecurity about their weight due to environmental conditioning and the prejudice of smallminded people they encounter, but they are taking charge of that by naming and standing proudly by it. Nobody can make you see yourself as lesser without your permission

by Aggressive_March 1 day ago

Yes but men aren't the ones calling each other short king Do you think an overweight woman would be ok with me calling her a fat bitch as some acknowledgment of solidarity? I don't even think calling someone short king is that deep but this is a really stupid comparison

by Upset_Emphasis 1 day ago

"Why call a man a king if you wouldn't call a woman a bitch?" what?

by Kyleepagac 1 day ago

Read his previous reply: "It's like how overweight women will call themselves and each other fat bitches" I'm not saying calling someone a short king is bad. I'm just saying that these aren't similar comparisons How is that so difficult to understand?

by Upset_Emphasis 1 day ago

You're just being disingenuous. Again, I really don't think calling a man a short king is that deep, but there is absolutely no equivalent - men are not going around calling women fat bitches as some term of endearment. It's just not true

by Upset_Emphasis 1 day ago

You're clearly very bitter on this issue so cool, I won't try to change your mind. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's coded with ill intent

by Aggressive_March 1 day ago

I don't think it's coded with ill intent? Reread my argument I don't think saying short king is a crazy thing to say, but saying there is some ‘fat bitch' equivalent just isn't true Don't start calling someone bitter when you lose an argument it's very sad

by Upset_Emphasis 1 day ago

Yes but men aren't the ones calling each other short king Yes they are. This absolutely is a thing that happens.

by ExternalScallion 1 day ago

Amen. So many short people make height their entire personality.

by Dixiehills 1 day ago

I've always viewed it as a quirky term of endearment, never once been offended. I think people just take themselves too seriously sometimes. You're short, own it. Getting mad over a joke term is off putting.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You're weird. Touch grass.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Be kinder to yourself.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Haha you sound like a short king

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nah I've just had people looking up to me before (so to speak). I understand their problems, I just wish they did so I don't have to. Probably yours also!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I just think monarchy in general is bad

by mayerclemmie 1 day ago

Sounds like you aren't the king part of the equation champ

by BigIntroduction3076 1 day ago

I'm a short guy (5'5") and I have never cared if someone mentions my height. It's a prominent feature of mine. I am also really pale so I joke about my paleness too. I feel like way too many short people obsess over their height.

by Dixiehills 1 day ago

I'd rather be called dwarf. My friends call me that, but not in the real world sense, but a medieval fantasy sense. Like Lord of the Rings dwarfs. I ain't no king. And even if it's a compliment, you still gotta emphasize my height. If you're gonna do that, don't patronize me by calling me king. Hence why I prefer being called dwarf.

by nickolas27 1 day ago

this is true, dwarf is way cooler.

by wisokyivory 1 day ago

And it's fitting. I'm a short stocky bearded man. Literally it just works for me. But dwarfism is a real condition that I don't have so it's something we do dance around in public.

by nickolas27 1 day ago

As a short person, I don't care if someone calls me short

by No_Break3972 1 day ago

Ok, champ.

by Sad_Prior9171 1 day ago

maybe its different with gay dudes?? cause i call all the guys shorter than me short kings and they love it?

by Delicious-Tea 1 day ago

I agree, I am not sure why but I find calling people kings and queens cringey. And totally agreed short King? Would a chubby girl wanna be called a fat Queen? 🤣

by Prosaccojudah 1 day ago

Yeah I can see how bringing up a characteristic that's overemphasized in society already can be annoying. Specifically bringing it up for no reason. Although something like "Do you know Mark" "The short king?" "Yeah" is different because there's a reason to bring it up as an identifier.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think it's interesting how much of a joke people find, when men advocate for themselves and what they want to be called.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ok Mr.Frodo

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think the term was invented to combat the idea that shortness = undesirability in men, which is a good thing, but it does come across as a bit patronising to be honest. Still, I think there are good intentions behind it

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It is not meant to be a compliment. The king part is just meant to make you feel better about being or called short since it is definitely not positive for a man.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ok, I shall call y'all Hobbits from now on /s

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I find the whole "king" thing cringey af honestly. I am a man with achondroplastic dwarfism (4ft) and I seem to be a magnet for other dudes calling me a short king. It makes me die inside every time. It just feels disingenuous (they usually say it before they know anything about me, so it's not like some endorsement for my outlook or personality, literally just my height) and patronising.

by buster26 1 day ago

My man is shorter than me and I'm very tall and he doesn't mind it at all, but whenever I say it I also mean it as a compliment, I guess it depends on the context

by Romagueraezekie 1 day ago

its alright Short King, we love you

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What's your height?

by Hot_Subject_5951 1 day ago

5'4

by wisokyivory 1 day ago

I'm tall/broad and I routinely have short people get insecure around me. You're right, it is. It's kind of like how people with weight issues overcompensate for their discomfort by having a big personality sometimes. Or how grey old men with nothing left to live for try to bring you down a peg with depressive humour, or insecure women attribute toxic masculinity to you with a look. I say this having tried to be humanistically kind and treat people equally. We could be if people took responsibility for their psychological issues better than with stuff like 'short kings'. It just kind of advertises what you're sad about - and also that you lack kindness to yourself internally, which probably means you don't have much to offer others either. Those who objectify themselves objectify others.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Short is not an insult though, so I don't understand the frustration

by maziekoelpin 1 day ago

always been used in a derogatory manner towards me

by wisokyivory 1 day ago

Honestly, people who seriously care about height are annoying and come off as incredibly shallow

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's something you need to work through. Many things about me people think they can use to insult me but I don't hate those parts of myself so it doesn't work as an insult. Find a way to accept yourself for who you are and no one can use it against you.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Any king who must call himself king is no king at all.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

How about vertically challenged peasants.

by vonruedenesteba 1 day ago

As a short guy, we'd rather be called "lord midget"

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Go get 'em, short king!

by Gullible-Credit 1 day ago

I feel for you OP. I don't see how it could feel empowering. I use it as an insult on purpose.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Hurts your short little feelings eh?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Im short af at 5'7. My 6'3 cousin called me a short king when his mom was making fun of my height asking when im gonna grow, tbh this didnt make me feel bad at all i get they were trying to patronise me but i really didnt care lol and it is true i am short.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

5'7" isn't short. Try being 5'3" and try to be taken seriously anywhere

by Extreme-Tour5319 1 day ago

Well you are under the national average but it's not to point when you go dam this sucks like being 5'3

by Anonymous 1 day ago

My brother is 5'4 and he accepts that hard. He is the most energetic guy ever and hardly anyone ever cares about his height, they just want to be around the guy. He does mention that the height thing doesn't ever come up unless the person is pissed off at him. For example, whenever he would break-up with a girl they would attack his height thinking he would be insecure about it. He never paid any attention to it, he's heard it 30000 times and it gets old after the 10th.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

5'7" is short, 5'3" is just shorter.

by Consistent_Till6345 1 day ago

I think you have missed the point of the compliment. It is to compliment people who aren't insecure about their height, if you don't like the "short" part then you are missing the point of the compliment.

by Anonymous 1 day ago
