+72 Kicking your kids out at 18 is bad parenting, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I feel like thats an obvious opinion in this day and age. Wage stagnation and inflation has made surviving on your own far harder, which makes kicking 18 year olds out much crueler.

Roommates used to be the obvious solution to this. In the 90's I moved out at 18 while working at a min wage job in a restaurant. How? Lots of roommates (2x per bedroom).

There's medication for BPD

And therapy.

She been on medication, in therapy, and in and out of inpatient facilities for the past 5 years. She self harms and has disordered eating. We've tried everything and thrown a massive amount of resources at her. I'm just trying to give perspective that some 18 year olds are extremely difficult to live with.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yeah but that doesn't really solve anything. BPD is notoriously hard to treat and manage. It's possible but not easy.

Not an option unpopular opinion and I'm willing to bet the number of parents who literally kick their kids out of the house at 18 is less than 0.1%. Noting that 18 is a milestone age and legal adulthood and telling their kids it's time to get a job or go to college or do something to work towards independence is perfectly reasonable.

Some kids are ready at 18 to move out; some are not. Some parents prepare their kids for life; some don't. Personally, my kids (16 twins) will always have a home with me if they want/need it. Especially in this economy. And yes, they have life skills and could easily live on their own.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I'm tired, so I read that as you have 16 sets of twins instead of one set of 16 year olds. I was concerned for a second 😭

It's also bad not have a job and spend your time gaming online while your parents pay your bills.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

100% agree, I've come to learn people hate living with their decisions.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Not even remotely unpopular

by Appropriate_Storm 2 days ago

In the US especially there is an engrained idea that at 18 you are an adult Don't you guys consider 21 as being an adult?

by Brook73 2 days ago

If you want to do anything fun? 21. If other people want to pile responsibility on you? 18.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

21 for drinking, but 18 for most things.

by DetectiveNo5289 2 days ago

No. For the most part you are legally an adult at 18. You can enter into contracts on your own. You are automatically tried as an adult in legal issues. You can join the military. Your parents no longer have automatic access to medical records, school records, etc. You are legally obligated to debts you incur.

in some cultures its viewed as perfectly ok to live with your parents. At least help out around the house here and there

When I turned 18 I wanted the f out of my mums house is all I can say

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I had a job starting at 15 and all the way through HS and college. They aren't mutually exclusive.

by Better_Can 2 days ago

How is that unpopular opinion? It's common sense.

Especially in this day and age, the economy is literally cooked. Not to mention it's almost impossible to get a job, rent is unaffordable along with groceries and everything else not to mention if you don't have roommates you're definitely not going to be able to be a place for sure. Getting kicked out in general by your parents with no real plan or safety net is a death sentence at this point.

My birthday is in January and I was dropped off in town the day I turned 18. I'm now almost 22 and haven't spoken to them since. I have a good job. Just bought a truck and my girlfriend and I plan to marry and have children soon. It is bad parenting. But if I would have stayed with them I'd be homeless. A drug addict. Or dead

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Damn bro, sorry you got kicked out.

by brekkedax 2 days ago

No one wants to its just a lot more challenging now a days even though everyone at that age is working to get their own place

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I am on board with making your kids get a job after high school and pay you part of the rent but fully kicking them out, no way.

by Emerald72 2 days ago

If you can't make it on your own at 18 your parents failed. I kicked myself out at 18 just for fun. Always been on good terms with my parents.
