But if something changes the way you perceive the world it does change your life, even if nothing changes externally. I would say that a persons life is defined by how they themselves experience it.

I assume you meant the way people react to fiction novels but nonfiction has changed all of humanity many times over.

If someone reads a lot then yeah, most of the books they read probably won't carry a lot of emotional significance to the person, but every once in a while one will stick and change how you think about something or cause you to show up in the world in a different way. There are definitely several books that I still think about regularly that I feel made me think about different aspects of life VERY differently, and what we hold onto emotionally will vary from person to person.

The same thing can be said about any form of media, however its personal opinion in this case. Some people are way more susceptible to "quotes or ideas" than you are. I've seen it all, but whenever I first started to get into philosophical thinking I was definitely somewhat enlightened. Some words you could take it you shouldn't devalue others experiences because yours wasn't as expected.
