+54 FPS Games Aren't What They Used to Be and They're Not Coming Back, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yea I really meant CS2. Technically it's built on GO but enough stuff has changed that most people consider it a separate game.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Old enough to drink.... damn thats a good one! True. CS2 is a blast. I'm still playing....since'99

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Man counter strike blew my mind as a kid

by stiedemanncarri 2 days ago

Games like Counter Strike have a higher skill ceiling because of their lack of crazy movement mechanics, you can't even sprint.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

He probably meant counter strafing and positioning?

by dibbertlauren 2 days ago

Yes exactly, and strafing and positioning are so important because of how barebones the mechanics are. If you could sprint and slide across the map and dolphin dive every 2 seconds positioning and strafing would not be nearly as relevant.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Have you played CS before? Movement is ABSOLUTELY a major part of the game. B hopping, counter strafeing, boosting, certain jumps and rollouts, etc… just because people aren't flying across the map doesn't mean the movement mechanics aren't extremely complex.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Never said it wasnt important. I said it doesn't have crazy mechanics. You can walk forward or backward or side to side. That's it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I think we have different definitions of crazy mechanics… When I say crazy mechanics I don't mean wacky, goofy, silly, character jumps off a spring and uses an umbrella to float down. I'm talking about the highly technical, often hidden mechanics that give capable players a huge edge over the competition. Diving might look "crazier" than something like counter strafing would, but that doesn't make the mechanic more useful or complex. I should have just said complex movement mechanics for clarity. I'm a Smash Bros Melee player and we often describe somewhat mundane looking things as "crazy movement" so I forget people don't all necessarily have that same understanding.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If you boil it down far enough like you are now every game is like that.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I would say you clearly have not played much cs if you think it lacks movement mechanics. It might not be super flashy mechanics like in apex or the finals but the list of advance movement tech is pretty long.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

What mechanics are there besides walking forward, backward, or side to side and jumping?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Bhop/air strafe, ledgebugging, run boosting

by Mean-Librarian-9993 2 days ago

Counter strafing, crouch jumping, air strafing, bhopping, surfing, ladder movement, silent drops, skill jumps, run boosts, and that's not really to mention that there's a lot that can be done with left, right, and crouch like jiggle peeking, Xantares peek, donk slides, etc.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Naming a series that has wholly stayed the same for almost 30 years is kinda proving his point though. Need more games focused on skill expression

by ApprehensiveTurn7078 2 days ago

Halo has a much higher skill ceiling as well or at least it used to.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

waiting on Half Life 3 ...

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nah bro. You just grew up. Folk have been saying this since forever. If these games were coming out when you were 13/14 you'd be all over them just as you were when they were the older games.

by Fherzog 2 days ago

Only if you play online shooters. I mainly play single player games and i have a dearth of amazing games to play to the point where i simply do not have time to play all the awesome games i want to play.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

He just said FPS, not online in the title. I played Stalker 2 this year, a single player FPS that has zero of the issues that OP mentions.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Huge disagree, and the "you grew up" argument is an invalid argument for this opinion. Old shooters especially Battlefield, CoD, Halo just to name the obvious ones definitely had a more adult following. Shooters have definitely gotten faster paced.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

There are great shooters now too, just not those.

by adelawalsh 2 days ago

Yeah I don't see why people care about the movement, the reason games like this are worse now is because there's no reward to playing. It's just systems designed to make you spend a bit more money. I really miss when cool skins meant someone was good.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I think games have shifted towards other formats from the basic COD. I mean how much is there to really evolve with FPS. I think helldivers and PUBG and Fortnite have taken shares out of FPS. As they have interesting twists on the genre.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nah bro. You just grew up. Folk have been saying this since forever. Exactly - not sure exactly when it first happened (between 1997-2001 to be sure) but the phrase 'dumbed down for console kiddies' was huge for PC gamers back then!

by Diligent-Move-4002 2 days ago

No they weren't this was right around when many peak games were released like gta5 and bo2. There was a little die down from those popular ass games but it wasn't what it is now where every game has a battle pass.

by Jonchristiansen 1 day ago

This type of "X thing used to be better in the past" has existed forever, and it's almost always the result of rose-tinted glasses and nostalgia. It's a generic complaint that will exist until the end of time.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

And i think the counter argument has been way overused. Sometimes, things are just different and change. Like it's not nostalgia to say that travel before 9/11 was drastically easier and much less stressful. Or that buying a home before the housing crisis was easier. Like that's just the way it was. Think of Blizzard for example and how commercialization and hyper capitalistic attitudes made them a boatload of money at the same time the quality of their games has just plummeted.

by zoeschamberger 1 day ago

Yeah, people always say this, but I've never had someone be able to properly explain why they feel this way. I'm not convinced this isn't the result of growing up and just not enjoying games as much anymore. It's not that games haven't changed at all, but it's hard to argue from any practical perspective that games from 2006 were better than games today.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nostalgia is always going to play a role but Id say most of my favorite games have come out since I've been an adult. I didnt have to be a child to be absolutely enthralled by games like Red Dead 2 or Baldurs Gate 3. Just havent had an FPS game, especially a typical linear story+online PVP type FPS game, give me that feeling in a long time. They all kinda feel the same.

by ListenAny4389 1 day ago

Yup, I loved COD when I was 14-19 then I just lost interest. BO2 was the last COD I played a lot of—I remember trying ghosts then just dropping the franchise.

by Lumpy-Night5616 1 day ago

To me, the fps games you like are the bad ones that came after the good ones went away believe it or not

by Leonorokeefe 1 day ago

yeah tab targeting is great. it works well for WoW. Obviously there are other systems but for WoW it just feels at home.

by Sweet_Leadership8659 1 day ago

My general point about tab targeting is that it is an outdated legacy mechanic invented in a time where games couldn't be as mechanically dense as they are today. Same thing with ARPGs like Diablo and path of exile, those games are based on legacy foundations. But there isn't anything wrong with it.

by Alternative-Okra4397 1 day ago

Porn is definitely innovating! I hear the stepsister got stuck inside of the dishwasher this time!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Eve online is different type off mmo, bur yeah your point is valid enough

by peyton52 1 day ago

you should play STRAFTAT, free on Steam

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This isn't an unpopular opinion, it's a stupid one. Your real opinion is "COD and Battlefield aren't what they used to be" which is one of the most popular opinions among gamers

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You should play Blood, FEAR, and Dusk.

by willowlemke 1 day ago

Fear is peak. I wish the trilogy got a remaster!

by Ruthe70 1 day ago

I could take or leave the sequels. The original FEAR is one of the greatest first person shooters ever made

by willowlemke 1 day ago

Did you even open the battlefield 6 beta?????

by Whyatt 1 day ago

"I hate all FPSs" proceeds to only mention 2.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Battlefield 6 is amazing otherwise I'd agree with you

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is full of hand-waving and cliches. What tangible differences in gameplay actually exist? Sure, monetization has gotten obnoxious, but at the end of the day you don't have to buy anything you don't want to, and skins don't change the gunplay. I think you just might not like gaming as much as you used to. The experience you have while gaming is largely on how you choose to play.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's always been massively popular though, the nuke video I refrenced got over a million views. "No scope 360" is an ancient meme for a reason.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You're also taking about the generic starter pack fps games. Yes they suck ass. Not unpopular

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What are the differences mechanically between the old COD / BF and now that you don't enjoy / miss?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think he was pretty upfront with his gripes

by Sherwoodstokes 1 day ago

He wasn't exactly up front. He made pretty blanket statements with no reasoning to why he feels that way. Other than you don't have to be skilled anymore which just isn't true for quite a few games and teamworks more needed in most games that aren't call of duty.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Original bf and cod were simple. Imo they just feel like chaos now.

by Simonismolly 1 day ago

That's why you gotta move to milsim/tactical fps games. Once I got past the learning curve, they've been the only games I play casually now.

by TraditionalDevice826 1 day ago

It takes a special kind of person to play mill sims as casually.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

At this point they should just name them "call of duty(insert year it was released)"

by Life_Sector7706 1 day ago

Yeah we should get rid of all the gimmicks and just go back to Quake Live

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I've never been an fps fan personally, but I'd be surprised if there aren't some indie games replicating that old school style. Or if there aren't already, there probably will be in the near future.

by Ronnyhomenick 1 day ago

There are still tons of military sim shooters out there, COD has always been a crappy hitscan game for stupid people.

by deshawnwatsica 1 day ago

I feel like when COD went mobile and the pandemic occurred, that made that transition happen with a certain speed. Just looking at that store on that game change over the time, and it was always predatory with purchases in general, to all these wild skins and celebrity skins made me realize they're trying to cater to people who don't play the game, just people who put money into it.

by Efficient-Beyond 1 day ago

I mean for me at least CoD has always been a cash grab, barely any effort put into it, mindless kinda game designed for the players who only buy sports games and shooters kinda games.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I've realized I don't shooters that don't have a stealth element. I want to be able to camp out and slowly kill enemies.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Social media kills everything.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Well yea, they are just designed to be addictive now. The entire experience is just dopamine spikes.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The Halo 2 era is where FPS peaked

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I only play single player FPS games. Screw that multiplayer crap

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Witchfire is the best FPS I've played in a long time.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I have been rewashing red vs blue with my wife. It makes me miss my teenage years playing Halo with the boys so much.

by Tight-Belt 1 day ago

Call of duty has never been a game about raw skill and teamwork, the skill ceiling is minimal compared to most other shooters on the market and there's never been a sliver of teamwork needed to win a game of cod.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If you want the classic CoD and Battlefield feel, play Insurgency Sandstorm.

by Comfortable_Bid 1 day ago

I think a better title would be "the FPS franchises of our youth aren't what they used to be and they're not coming back" There's "realistic", strategic, non-live service shooter games released all the time, but they don't get traction because a vast majority of players are fine with what CoD or Battlefield or Halo turned into and they know they like the franchise so they just play them.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Lowkey you're right

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Does anybody else remember in the early 2010's when people used to joke about every Call of Duty since MW1 being a $60 map pack? FPS games haven't been "what they used to be" for a long time, if ever. Even so, maybe you should try out some single player FPS games, like Doom or Wolfenstein, maybe even Far Cry.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

OP check out Hell Let Loose

by Anonymous 1 day ago

FPS games peaked with MOH Airborne.

by Any_Psychology_580 1 day ago

FPS game are literally always ruined by campers. It's simple.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Battlefield 1 was one of the best ones made, in my view. BF4 was good after it was patched and all fixed. Sucks it wasn't great from launch, but whatever. Nothing will be worse than Hardline. That was brutal.

by Noemi66 1 day ago

That was my least favorite time in gaming. All the ambition but the hardware couldn't keep up so you got a ton of half baked stuff.

by Anonymous 1 day ago
