Viggo Mortensen is not great as Aragorn, amirite?

First true unpopular opinion I've seen in a long time.

I agree that it's very difficult for an actor to play a character like Aragorn well, but Viggo did as good a job as anyone would be able to - he was brooding and serious, but tough and inspiring when he needed to be, which ticks all the boxes. I think the thing you're missing is that a film just about Aragorn would be dull af because he is so serious. It's the patchwork of all the characters and stories that make LOTR so good. So no, Viggo isn't overrated, he was perfect for Aragorn, but the character of Aragorn only works with everyone else around him.

I read the books some 30 years ago and seem to remember Aragorn being a bit miserable all the time. I would argue Viggo captured it quite well.

Good thing you weren't cast director or something then.

Utter stupid opinions.

As someone who has not read the books, I had the same reaction to the end. He was a member of the crew but not one that stood out as some "chosen one" destined to become king. I realize that only a human can become king, but Sam, Frodo, Gimli, Gandalf, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett all stood out more as memorable characters.

This is truly unpopular

Did you read the books? There is a difference between unpopular and uneducated opinions. Aragorn's character is supposed to be grim, brave, and responsible.

Agreed. I also felt his character lacking soul. I dunno why most people don't see it though.

Maybe he brings a lot of soul and you just don't see it.

Most people are too intertwined with the image of him as aragorn to evaluate properly. If they even read the books, they read them picturing him.
